What Students Say
Likes
- I liked the people around me the most. Great individuals showcasing the entire spectrum of society, from crazy weirdos to crazy smartypants.
- College campus is quite big and airy but not a lot of importance is given to maintenance.
- Some teachers are superb, they add life to the subject, but can't say the same for others
Dislikes
- Negligence of administration about maintenance and improvement of the campus
Course Curriculum Overview
I actually like the courses in my branch, like all basics are present then we gradually move towards technical and core courses. Thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mechanics of solids, machine design, etc., cover the Mechanical engineering branch. Plus, study from the internet, there's plenty of things to learn, you just need the will.
Internships Opportunities
Internships are available from both public as well as private sectors. They are quite good, some do offer paid stipends. Research internships are available under professors, in IITs and other institutions. Diversity hiring does occur here.
Placement Experience
As per our seniors and professors, placements are quite good here. EIE (Electronics and Instrumentation), CSE, EE and ECE have more IT sector jobs, ME and CE have scope for core jobs but a high CGPA is required for them, and that's why mostly people go for tech companies after maintaininig a decent CGPA of >= 7.5, could change to >= 8 in the following years. Many poeple got for civil services, GATE and other competitive exams, some go for further studies: national and foreign both. Highest placement would be around 50 LPA for some tech company and average would be 10-11 LPA. Students get eligible for campus placement in the 4th year, subject to having no active backlogs, and having an CGPA >=7.5 as of yet. In the third year, everyone must complete an internship, being it indsutrial or research based. It is recommened for 2 internships in these 4 years. My plans are to sit for placements in the core sector, and do a lot of thigs all together so let me see what happens, we'll change accordingly.
Fees and Financial Aid
I am paying my college a year wise fees of ?67,000 after availing zero tuition fee under SC category. ?22,500 is hostel and mess fee, same for all. In the first semester, the fees are a bit higher, approx ?1.2 lakh for general category and around ?60, 000 for others as some refundable security deposits are taken as well as the counselling fees by JoSAA. From the second semester onwards, general category students pay around ?1 laks, those who have family income above ?5 lakhs, and there is 33% tution fee waiver for family income between ?1 to ?5 lakhs and zero tuition fees for family income under ?1 lakhs. ?22,500 for mess and board of hostel management is same for all, although it is subject to some degree of change yearly. Scholarships are available by public and private sectors both. I didn't apply for them as I thought I wouldn't get it. My friends also applied but not everyone are eligible for it, and as of Januray 2025, no money has yet been given to them, applications are still under process. Money usually comes around April each year. I have opted for education loan from SBI which would be present at the timne of admission each year and the quicker you apply, the quicker you get your documents, the quicker would be the process.
Campus Life
Let me be honest, 1. The infrastructure could be very better, don't understand where the money goes. 2. Annual cultural fest, around Feb, called Incandescence 3. Annual technical fest, around Oct, called Tecnoesis 4. Two other cultural programs Posua and Oikyotom 5. Most equipments in the labs are faulty, typical of public institutes, 6. A big central digital library with loads of books, but I stay away from such big places 7. All extracurricular activities are available except archery and swimming 8. Clubs, societies and organisations like NSS and NCC are present. Not all clubs are beneficial for all, come and see for yourself which best suits you. 9. Campus life is pretty good for me, but it's just that time management is a pretty big factor and decides your oevrall experience in college. 10. Student quality is great, friendly and helpful seniors and great alumni base. Use college as a platform to improve yourselves and try living the moment as well. Also, talk to everyone and develop good friendships, not for any help or benefit in the future, but just for being with someone and sharing moments. We all need each other for a stable system.
Hostel Facilities
Water sometimes gets exhausted, adjust among your friends for using the toilets, run towards the oppssite sides's bathrooms. My hostel is Boys Hostel 3, room 3320 for the 1st year. Geysers have been installed this semester. They do work. If things fail to work, it's our responsibility to inform the supervisors and get them fixed. Power cuts do happen but backup generators usually supply power within 5 mins. Internet is quite fast, at least in my hostel. The other 1st year boys hostel is PGH-3 a.k.a., Aryabhatta. Holds around 600 boys, our BH3 has 123 good boys. I Intenet and cellular commnuication is very bad in thye ground floors but LAN ports are quite fast. Mess food is great, this 2nd semester we are getting much tastier food and it's actually pretty tasty, it all happens when good people do join for doing the good. So, once you become an engineer, become a good person too.
Admission
I had already taken a drop year for JEE preparation, I messed up in the drop year, wasted a lot of time, but learnt a lot too and had unique experiences. I got NIT Silchar from 1st round of JoSAA but in Civil Engg. but when I got Mechanical Engg. in the 2nd round, I quickly grabbed it and yes, it was a great decision. I selected what I got, I did want to study mechanical engineering and hence the stars aligned and I am right here, writing this review around 0100 hrs on the 25th of January, 2025 after practising for the 26th January Republic Day parade, just to earn some money as my wallet has become weightless. I am trying my best to write here, and will share the rest when/if you take admission here.
Faculty
There are minors, mid semester exams and end semester exams. End sems are of 2 hrs and carry 50 marks each, mid sems are of 1 hr each and carryt 30 marks, the minors depend upon he professors and could range from 0 to 20 marks. Some professors are really good at teaching, some are mediocre and some are just getting the salary. If someone makes you dislike the subject, read a book about that course and try imagining how it would apply to your life, if then also you can't undersdtand it, just try to read it for clearing the exams. The toughness of the exams are dependent on the professors too. My first semester exams were easy but I didn't study and managed to get an F grade in Mathematics 1 (MA 101) course. Don't be like me, or you can try too, it's also an experience. Don't worry, you would be able to manage once you reach college, plenty of good teachers are present, be it in the form of your friends, peers, seniors, internet or the surroundings.
Night Life
Even though there were some night timings, we bypassed them. NITS Cafe, restaurants and fast food joints just outside the main gate, multipurpose shops in James Corner, T point as well as in FPS (fair price shops; nothing is fair there), these would be the hangout places for many of us here. Gymnasium is available. Night life is present in all forms, humans, serpents, bats, etc,.
