What Students Say
Likes
- Social life at thapar is very fun. Infrastructure and availability of equipments is high.
- Some faculties are very interactive. They provide chances to work on projects and research papers
- Course curriculum is good for personal development as there are courses that are mainly focussed on social skills
Dislikes
- Attendance criteria can be very stressful as the main focus is on cgpa
- There are a large no of students in thapar like around 1000 in a single branch which kind of is very unfair as it leads to a huge competition
- Too much drugs and alcoholic habits. Really impacts a child’s mental health
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is pretty relevant. In first year the course included subjects from all the different departments and from the next years focuses on one branch. Practicality in the courses are little missing. I think the course still focuses on very old times and the technology needs to improve as now ai is relevant so this is the time that the course should advance. The frequency of exams is a little high as there are exams twice in 4.5 month semester with sessionals happening twice making time management a little difficult
Placement Experience
After 6th semester student gets eligible to sit for placement tests. A lot of companies visit thapar but lately the placement tests are getting limited to computer related branches with high cgpa demands. If campus placement is not provided i will apply for off campus placements but i will do sit for on campus placement. Due to recession the placements have dropped to 50% but was higher earlier
Fees and Financial Aid
The semeseter wise fees is more than 2.5 lakhs for computer related branches and around 2.2 lakhs for non computer branches. There is no special ailment for backward castes but scholarship opportunities are given on merit basis(jee score for first year) and cgpa for following years. There are different categories for scholarship amounts. Maximum scholarship provided is tution fee+development fee waiver. Then tuition fee+1/2 development fee and then only tution fee waiver.
Campus Life
A major techno cultural fest calked saturnalia marks for an amazing experience. Students from different colleges compete in various events ending with a star night. Also occasionally various societies keep organising events which adds fun to social life. Joining societies gives you an opportunity to interact with your peers and seniors
Hostel Facilities
Hostel accommodation in thapar is a little costly as for a 2s room with attached washrooms and ac we pay 58000 pp for one semester which includes laundry plus room cleaning. Mess fee is again a little high upto 25k per semester. The food is not very satisfactory. They provide variety of food items in different menu but still it is not upto the mark. The hostels are alloted on merit basis only
Admission
I applied to very few colleges like nitj, ipu, chitkara and thapar. I got confirmed admission in chitkara but the placement opportunities in chitkara are very less as compared to thapar and the word of mouth about chitkara was also not very good. For ipu i didn't participate in counselling as my parents were little skeptical about sending me this far and delhi isn't very safe either. In nitj i was getting civil branch which didn't made sense thus i chose thapar as i got computer branch here which satisfied my requirements and interest. The admission criteria is boards and jee both. The cutoff goes around 96 percentile for cse and 93-94 for coe and similarly keeps goind down for different branches. There is a exam held by thapar themselves at the end of first semester
Faculty
The faculty to student ratio will be 1:30 and the faculties are quite approachable. The college provides a mentor to students which makes approaching them easier. Faculties like Mr threatened mandeep singh from civil department really nice. His teaching style is very interesting and he is very helpful. There are 2 exams in one semester and sessionals also occurs twice for each subject. The course curriculum is pretty relevant and a very few amount of students fail exams as there is minimum 35 marks criteria.
Night Life
The nightlife is a little dull as there are many restrictions on late entry. You have to enter the campus by 8 pm and your respective hostels by 8:30 which is a little disappointing and also the area around thapar is safe and lively but it can be a little unsafe as the crowd nearby is a little weird. There are many places like la club, cava, elevate favourite spots for parties and clubbing.
