Dislikes
- The number of companies visiting the IIEST shibpur campus is decreasing every year significantly but the placement cell of the college hardly bothers about it. The NIRF ranking has also gone down in the recent years.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is quite relevant according to the latest industry demands. However, project work based on real applications can be included more in the curriculum. Some of the labs lack the latest equipment which should be improved. In each semester there are two main exams the mid-semester and end-semester which are of moderate level. There are also class tests whose marks and frequency depend on the respective subject faculties.
Internships Opportunities
Google,Microsoft,BNY Mellon ,Wells Fargo, Deutsche Bank, Texas Instruments are among the companies that provide a high stipend during the internship period. Other than that companies like PWC, Accenture, and Tata steel, JSL also provide internship opportunities with moderate stipends. There are some companies like GRSE,BIS and EIL that do not provide any stipend.
Placement Experience
The placement record of IIEST Shibpur is good however it has deteriorated during the last two years. The students are eligible for internships from the third year and placements from the final year of the course. Companies like Microsoft, Google, PWC, Tata Steel, and Texas Instruments are some that visit our campus. The average package is around 12 lacs per annum and this year the highest package offered to a student is around 3.5 Cr per annum (off-campus placement ) by Barclays UK.
Fees and Financial Aid
IIEST Shibpur charges nearly Rs 68000 per semester for B.TECH courses without any waiver. Two types of fee waivers are available 2/3 waiver and and full waiver. If the family income of the student is less than 1 lac per year then he/she gets a full waiver and has to pay only Rs 5000 per semester and if between 1lacs and 5 lacs per year then he/she can opt for a 2/3rd waiver and has to pay around Rs 27000 per semester. By default, the students belonging to the SC and ST categories will get a full waiver. The semester fees include tuition fees, examination fees, lab fees, and all other charges during a semester excluding the hostel fees.
Campus Life
The campus life is good. Rebecca is the biggest cultural fest of IIEST Shibpur which is held for 4 days generally during the month of February or March. Other than this there are technical fests held by each department mostly during February. There are various clubs like Euphony, Robodarshan, Debsoc, etc. There are also various sports events that are held throughout the year. The entire campus has IEEE free access. One can find almost every book in the Ramanujan Central Library of IIEST Shibpur which is one of the largest resourceful technical library in the country.
Admission
I chose this college because the course curriculum is quite relevant and the professors here are mostly PhD holders from reputed universities of the country and abroad. The placement record of this college is quite good compared to other colleges in the country. To get admission one has to secure a good rank in the JEE Main entrance examination and then apply for the JOSSA counseling process and he/she can get an opportunity at IIEST Shibpur based on the cutoff marks of that year.
Faculty
Faculty to student ratio is almost 1:50. Prof Ayan Banerjee of the Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Department is an outstanding faculty and is easily approachable. He is also a very good mentor to the students. Some professors are very strict with attendance and their teaching style is not even appreciable. In each semester, there are two main exams mid-semester and exam semester which is of moderate level. Most questions are asked from the suggestions given in the class. Other than these there are regular class tests that depend on the respective professors and lab vivas are conducted before the end semester. The course curriculum is quite relevant according to the latest industry demands.
