Remarks
The admission process went very smoothly. I applied for WBJEE and paid the application fee which was 700 for the General category and 500 for the Reserved category. We went to our examination center which was obviously in West Bengal. The rules to be followed inside the examination center are given in the admit cards. We have to give 2 papers both in one day. One for mathematics and one for physics and chemistry. You can see the latest WBJEE exam paper pattern on sites like collegedunia.com. After the exam, we waited for the college enrollment (paid 54000 after signing in for the enrollment) and got IEM in the second round. I went to college according to the admission date given on their official website and paid the remaining admission fee. Yes, there are benefits for the Reservation categories.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum of IEM is up to the mark with the latest trend carrying the coding and core subjects. The curriculum includes cyber security, machine learning, big data analysis, database management system, VLSI, etc, depending on your core subject. There is a student exchange program if you are interested. The labs are in good condition. Attendance is mandatory. There will be an Aptitude class to prepare you for the placements. Faculty to student ratio is very good around 1:8. There will be 2 mid-semesters (1.5 or 2-month gap between them), lab practicals, and the end semester every semester. It's not hard to pass those exams.
Internships Opportunities
Internship opportunities provided by the college are fewer. The college will provide you with training opportunities like VLSI, Data Science, etc. You can ask teachers about internships, if they know about an opportunity they will direct you to them otherwise you have to find it yourself. You have to find internships yourself, use LinkedIn to increase your contacts, and apply for internships. The college will give you a recommendation. Ask alumni about internship opportunities and how to efficiently apply for them.
Placement Experience
The placements at my college are better than most of the colleges in West Bengal. The average package is around 4,00,000-5,00,000 for more than 95% of CSE, IT, and ECE students. If you looking for core jobs then I would recommend you to go somewhere else as there are very fewer core companies in Kolkata and IEM is surrounded by tech companies. That's the reason most of the core students go for higher education. The highest package is 18 Lakhs for on-campus placement by ORACLE and for off-campus it is 72 Lakhs in 2022.
Fees and Financial Aid
The fee structure of IEM Kolkata is higher than other colleges in Kolkata. At the time of my admission, it was 70,000 per semester and a little higher for the first semester (total of 5,90,000 and exam fee per semester + hostel fee(78000 per year for boys)) which is now 6,25,000 and exam fee+ hostel(96000 per year for boys). Hostels are available for both girls and boys. There are study abroad programs also. There are scholarships provided by the college whose information is given on the official IEM site.
Campus Life
College life is good. You have to maintain your attendance which is strictly monitored. Books are easily available. You can borrow books from the library which is open 24x7. You can use printing facilities inside the college which are much cheaper than outside. There is one annual fest that happens in February/ March which is way more fun. There are many conferences, events, seminars, foreign lectures, etc provided to you. The sports function are there like cricket tournaments, football tournaments, volleyball, and indoor games tournaments. If you want to participate contact seniors and teachers. There are a lot of social groups and student chapters in our college like the Coding Club, GDSC, Humor and Drama club, Quizzard club, Dance club, etc. You may have to pass an interview to get into some of them.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facilities are okay but if you are from outside West Bengal then you may face issues with food, especially for vegetarians. Free wifi is available. There is no shortage of water and electricity. You have to follow the rules inside the hostel like you have to enter the hostel before 7 pm. In non-veg, you will get eggs, fish, and chicken. Chowmein (breakfast) and fried rice (dinner) on weekends. I will rate food 6/10 and weekends 8/10. The hostel is within walking distance from the college around 1-1.5 km. But most of the students prefer to get a flat within the walking distance.
