Remarks
I took admission in 2019 (before the pandemic). I scored 95.96 percentile in jee mains and was eligible for Computer engineering. You can find the application form of thapar university on its official website (thapar.edu). Admission in offline mode was a bit hectic. A team of senior students was managing the seating and directed us from one hall to another. After 3 hours we reached the main auditorium where the admission process actually took place. There were queues in which students had to stand (parents were not allowed to stand in the queue) to pay their fees. Admission could have been easier if everything was timed perfectly, the complete admission process delayed by about 3 hours due to the offline work, the number of seats left in different branches was being updated manually on whiteboards, this could have been made easier if it was done using computer systems.
Course Curriculum Overview
Since I was eligible for computer engineering, I chose this as my course for BE. Faculty to student ratio is fair. Thapar has a lot of faculty for different subjects and the teachers are well qualified and try to deliver the lectures in a way that students are able to get the concepts. Teachers teach using laptops, and projectors, the teacher's screen is displayed on a bigger screen using projectors. Talking about exams and evaluation, there are evaluations based on labs, tutorials, lectures in form of lab performances, vivas, written tests (mid sem exams and end sem exams). I would rate the level of MSTs and ESTs 9 on a scale of 10. The papers are difficult but if you've studied the subjects, you can pass easily. Most of the exam comes from the things taught in class, there is a very rare chance of questions being out of the syllabus in exams.
Internships Opportunities
Many companies hire students as interns and provide a good stipend. DE Shaw interned 2 students from our batch with a stipend of 1.5 L/month this was the highest stipend I heard of in our batch. Mostly the role of the student is to develop and maintain codes, testing of the software, etc.
Placement Experience
The students are eligible for on-campus internships from the 3rd semester, and for placement from the 3rd year (that is the 5th sem). Many companies visit the campus every year. Companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Paytm, Goldman Sachs, and many more companies come to the campus and the students get nicely placed in these companies. The average package of computer engineering is near about 10-11 LPA, the highest offered package varies from 40-60 LPA based on student performances. Most of the students get placed (more then 95%).
Fees and Financial Aid
Since it is a private college, it has high fees, and the fees increase by 10% every year (that is after 2 semesters). Scholarships are provided to some of the students who are the toppers of their respective courses/branches.
Campus Life
Saturnalia is the biggest event that takes place in September. Frosh events take place for the freshies in the month of August. Thapar has a very large library and has many types of books, literature, course textbooks, historical books, books for preparation of competitive examinations. The classrooms and library are fully air-conditioned, lecture halls have a capacity of near about 200 students and there are speakers in the classrooms so that the students can easily listen to what the teacher says. The college has several playgrounds and a well-maintained athletic track. Students can play a variety of games like Table tennis, football, cricket, badminton, lawn tennis, volleyball, hockey, and many more. The sports department also organizes various sporting events urja, inter-hostel tournaments, inter-branch toy=urnaments, etc. There are many clubs and societies of different genres like drama society, dance society, society for educational purposes, sports, etc.
Hostel Facilities
You'll surely enjoy the hostel life in the college. The hostels are well maintained, in the first year, you'll have the option to opt a 3-seater or 4-seater rooms. The room has basic facilities like 2 tube lights, 2 fans, 3 study tables and beds (in case of 3-seater), attached balconies, some of the rooms are air-conditioned as well. The menu for mess is decided by the students of the hostel and mess community. The quality of the meal is good. There is a hostel party when the semester is about to end, and functions on some of the festivals. There is a table tennis hall and a gym in almost every hostel, the gym is open for limited hours and the table tennis hall is accessible almost every time. The fees of hostels vary because of facilities provided, the room is air-conditioned or not, etc facilities. During admission, you'll be allocated a hostel, and after the end of the year, you'll be filling out google forms in which you can give your preference order and will be allocated hostels based on your CGPA.
