Remarks
My only complaint has been my placement. I was placed in a firm where I hardly learnt anything. The college is aware of it and is still placing girls in that firm. It's just a waste of time. The faculty is good and some teachers are extremely dedicated and helpful. To survive in this college, you need a lot of hardwork.
Entrance Preview
I took no entrance exam. All one has to do to enroll in this course is submit the required documents and score more than 40% in your board exams. Submit and wait for the results. I chose this college ever the others for two reasons, it gives you a B.Sc degree in design and it's the best institute in Kolkata. Though placements are nothing great.
Course Curriculum Overview
I would say that it's a good college. It's not like the other colleges where you can manage without attending classes. The course is nicely planned and improving every year. You'll get exposure but you also have to be very focused and eager to learn. The work pressure is immense, but it's the same story with every design school. They will make you participate in competitions. And help you throughout.
Internships Opportunities
Yes the college provides internship. You are placed only for one and a half months. And later if the firm wants to hire you, they'll offer you a job, otherwise you get kicked out. You'll get placed for sure but only for one and a half months. And you have to be very lucky to get placed in a good firm. I had a very bad experience. Some of the firm's are WB Studios, Design Cell, Shah and associates, Chaddha, Horticulture, etc. Mine was WB Studios and it was a horrible experience as we were only made to go to sites for those one and a half months. We designed nothing. We were only observing. Site visits are a very important part of interiors design but going to the site and supervising is not the job of a designer. Spending two hours on the site everyday is more than enough. The college inspite of knowing this, still places girls in that firm, and many other such firms. So pls don't expect much from the college when it comes to placements. And you get no stipend or salary to the company employs you.
Placement Experience
All students get placed. But you might have to wait and wait. You will be sent for interviews till you are placed somewhere. But like I mentioned earlier, you don't get a job. It's an internship of one and a half months. No salary. No stipend. And no guaranteed job. If you want, you can also get placed outside Kolkata. There's no guarantee that you'll surely get placed outside the city but the college will try it's best to. Two girls from my college were placed in Mumbai. But again, it's was just for one and a half months. You have to impress your employers to get the job.
College Events
1. Society Interiors competition 2. Cultural fest 3. Annual day There are no major events but the college has improved big time and is participating much more. There are something happening throughout. The are seminars and competitions organised but it's more for the commerce sections.
Fee Structure And Facilities
The fee it's a bit expensive. But it's not unaffordable. The fee structure changes every years and you'll be spending around 3 lakhs on the entire course, and the college does not provide hostel facility. I wouldn't say it's too expensive though be ready to spend wisely on the college assignments.
Fees and Financial Aid
No I don't have much knowledge about the loan structures and haven't availed any either. To my knowledge, I don't think there is any loan facilities, but I'm not sure. You can easily get all information at the college office.
Campus Life
My college is a girls'college. There are not much competitions for the interior design section except for one, which is the Society Interiors competition. If you qualify in Kolkata, you are sent to Mumbai for the main competition. Other than that, there's not much you can do. People from all religions and castes are treated equally and there's no discrimination. There's definitely some politics in college. Teachers have their own favourites and do tend to give some students more preference.
Hostel Facilities
The college does not provide hostels and one has to look for their own accomodation. The canteen needs improvement. It's nothing too great but there's a big open area in college to chill. The standard of the canteen is pretty low and not very good when it comes to hygiene.
Alumni/Alumna
The senior students are very helpful and never hesitate to help the current students. My seniors were extremely helpful and I remember calling then quite a number of times for help. And have never been let down. Just make good friends with your seniors and it'll be extremely helpful for you.
Exam Structure
It's pretty hectic and strict. You have to work very hard and attend all practical classes. Attendance is compulsory and subject wise. If you don't have 60% attendance in all subjects, you might not be allowed to sit for the exams. The exams are pretty frequent and you'll keep getting assignments. Be ready for sleepless nights. And a lot of work pressure.
Admission
First go and collect the brochure and form from the college once they are available. Fill the form as specified and attach the required documents, e.g. a copy ofyour class 10 and class 12 board results, any workshop certificates, anything you've won in school or otherwise, etc. Make sure to put in all the certificates you've got to have a better chance at getting admission.
Faculty
The faculty has both excellent and average teachers. But if you are focused, you'll get immense exposure and help. Some teachers give in their 100% in teaching the students. The faculty is well qualified. But not every teacher can teach well.
