Remarks
For MTech, do not choose this college. For MCA and BTech this really is a good college. Pros: Permanently Faculty, Labs, Fest, Alumni Cons: lab assistants, Guest faculty, Offline fee submission Dependents: Placements will depend upon students, the bitter truth being said "you are on your own"
Course Curriculum Overview
The course structure is straight forward outdated. Syllabus in networking has been laid unchanged for the past 10-15 years, I guess. There are some unnecessary incorporations of subjects like Business Management, Accountancy into the course. They do nothing but waste student's time. Unfortunately, MAKAUT (University to which this college is affiliated) does nothing to revive the course structure.
Placement Experience
Some of the BTech students claim they are an intern in E-Cell and T&P Cell. I haven't verified this so I'm not sure about the internship. But campus placement in 2019 have been good if not great. Several MNCs(TCS, CTS) and product based companies(Kreeti, etc) have visited our campus for offering jobs to BTech, MTech and MCA students. The visiting companies does out a baggage of eligibility criteria on aspirants. Some require 75%, 65% and 60% throughout academic career (10, 12, Diploma, Graduation depending on the path you've followed). Besides, the T&P cell will notify you whenever there is a pool campusing.
College Events
Teacher's Day - All of the college gathers inside a large classroom on the library building to participate or watch this event. A smaller version is also organized by the MCA department. Departmental & College Freshers - Seniors of a particular stream organize a fresher's for the nubile batch. And a overall fresher's is also given Farewell - Juniors contribute to bid a last goodbye to the seniors Espectro - One of the reason KGEC is known for. A massive, well organized, spacious event packed with a bunch of capable hosts and managers. Several clubs(music, dancing, modelling) take part in the fest. This costs about ?800 per student per year.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Not at all expensive. About 60-80% cheaper than competing private colleges. No hidden academic charges. In MCA, we pay ?9000 per semester. This varies between ?8000-11000 per sem for various streams of BTech. For MTech this varies between ?15000-19000 per semester.
Fees and Financial Aid
Since this college comes under the control of West Bengal government, all of it's scholarships are available for the students. The college on it's own do not provide any external waivings/scholarships. Reserved category students avail upto ?12000-13000 and meritious ones ?60000 per year. Besides, a full and half freeship scheme for students from financially weak backgrounds are also available where 50% and 100% of the academic fees are waived.
Campus Life
Inter-departmental Sports such as cricket is played. Coding comeptitions are organized for students. Students are groomed and encouraged for entrepreneurship and national/global comeptitions such as Smart India Hackathon. Labs are well equipped and modern.
Hostel Facilities
I have not opted for Hostel. But the prices are very low. It takes about ?1500 for a month including food and electricity charges. As compared to a mess which is ?3000. There are 5 boys hostel and 1 girls hostel.
Alumni/Alumna
Alumni are very helpful. Some of the pass outs do really help you secure a job by enlightening unfollowed or unseen paths in IT as well as other sectors. Although, you will have to build a network by establishing a comfortable communication relationship with them.
Admission
After completing graduation (B. Sc Honours) in Computer Science from Calcutta University, i appeared in JECA examination conducted by WBJEE, this is conducted only in West Bengal and although people from any state can appear for the examination, most of the government colleges only allow students who are living in West Bengal for more than 10 years to get a seat. On scoring a rank of 136, I made my way into this government institution. Students from commerce and non computer streams can also join MCA, but they should have mathematics as a subject in graduation to be eligible for JECA.
Faculty
All of the permanent faculties are good, they are well educated and a great depth of knowledge of what they are teaching. They are regular, helpful. About the guest faculties, I cannot say the same for all. Some of the gues faculties are not even prepared to hear your doubts, they'll come, teach as if they have all the data mugged up, complete the syllabus irresponsibly and leave. Lab assistants don't really know what they are doing except plugging in and out the cables so don't expect any sort of help from them.
