Professor Cimil Babu is the Vice Principal of Holy Family College of Nursing. She is a Ph.D scholar at INC Delhi, RGUHS Bengaluru in the research areas of Obstetrical and Gynaecological nursing. Furthermore, she holds a Masters degree in Nursing from the University of Delhi (RAK College of Nursing) and a Bachelors degree in Nursing from AIIMS Delhi. She has received the book prize award from AIIMS New Delhi for academic excellence.

With about 28 years of clinical and teaching experience, Professor Babu has worked as a Clinical Instructor, Lecturer, Associate Professor and Professor. Moreover, she has served as IQAC Co- ordinator, research guide for postgraduate students since 2016, as a research coordinator of college, and as a research examiner.

What motivated you to choose a path in higher education administration, and what attracted you to your current position as a principal/Vice- Principal?

I have about 28 years of professional experience in Nursing and have worked in various capacities. Teaching is my passion, and I am proud to be part of this prestigious institution. Holy Family College of Nursing provides outcome-based quality nursing education focused on the overall development of the student, which I enjoy contributing to.

What's your vision for the college?

Holy Family Hospital, Delhi, is one of the pioneers in Nursing education in India. We believe in providing comprehensive nursing care to society. The School of Nursing in Holy Family Hospital, New Delhi, was started in 1956 and has bloomed into a College of Nursing, which is affiliated to University of Delhi. The college has a history of pioneering nursing education and wishes to become the centre of quality education in the nation.

How do you tend to establish a relation with the students being the principal/Vice-Principal of the university? How do you make yourself available to them?

Our college provides a student-friendly environment where students have the freedom to meet me personally or to call by telephone at any time if it is needed. Class teachers and mentors are always there to help them. Additionally, I meet the students during clinical rounds as well as in classrooms. The common issues are discussed in general body meetings of the Student Nurses Association and committee meetings. 

What advice would you offer to present-day youth and aspiring students?

Quality patient care requires the integration of excellent knowledge and clinical skills. We should have a feeling of responsibility towards our society with strong ethical and moral values. Be a good human being. Nursing is a demanding field, and with hard work and perseverance, success is achievable.

What specific measures or programs has your institution implemented to address the increasing mental health issues and stress among today’s youth?

We provide pre- admission counselling and a detailed orientation programme for students. The college has very good counselling facilities and provides professional help if needed. Additionally, we conduct stress management resilience-building and yoga sessions. Our mentor and mentee program provides mentorship for each student, and they can discuss any issues with their mentor.

What are your primary responsibilities as a principal/Vice-Principal and how do you balance them with other aspects of your job?

My primary responsibility is to ensure the welfare of students, staff, and the organisation by upholding the dignity and values of the profession. We focus on quality nursing education. We always maintain a student-teacher ratio of 1:10. We hold frequent meetings with various committees, faculty, and student groups and take regular feedback from students and various stakeholders.

How does the curriculum of your college ensure the best practices of the industry?

All programmes are based on the curriculum prescribed by the Indian Nursing Council, which is on international standards. We always provide clinical experience under the constant supervision of faculty. Students clinical experience is provided in NABH-accredited parent hospital and various other clinical and community settings. Our hospital staff is also actively involved in student teaching/learning activities. Along with the regular course activities, we have a lot of extracurricular activities organised throughout the year.
