New Delhi: The CUET UG 2024 result was scheduled to be out on June 30, 2024, but has now been postponed. This delay is caused due to the NEET UG paper leak controversy. The CUET UG 2024 is an entrance exam for undergraduate programs at several central universities including Delhi University (DU), was conducted between May 15, 2024, and May 29, 2024, in hybrid formats.

Request by Faculty Members

Delhi University (DU) is facing issues in admission for the new academic session. Faculty members have expressed concerns that the delay in result declaration will disrupt the academic calendar for the 2024-25 year. They have formally requested Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh to reconsider using the CUET for undergraduate admissions.

This delay is not for the first time rather for the third consecutive year, CUET UG results have postponed the admission process in Delhi University. In 2022, semester classes began in November, and in 2023, classes were delayed until August 16 due to conflicts in Manipur affecting result announcements.

The faculty members stated in their note to VC, “The University of Delhi was known not only for its flagship courses but also for the timely compliance of its academic calendar: a feature that attracted students from the entire country to pursue their undergraduate studies in the University. By introducing half-baked and poorly formulated policies like NEP and CUET, the University of Delhi has seriously undermined its autonomy on all policy decisions but has also become a victim of policy paralysis at the level of the Government and the Ministry of Education.”

Transparency and Regional Diversity

The faculty also highlighted a lack of transparency in the CUET UG admission process and suggested that the system reduces regional diversity in classrooms. Despite high scores, nearly 20,000 students achieved a 100 percentile in 2022, and over 22,000 in 2023, as a result the admissions remain highly competitive, as the cut-off rose high. There are also concerns about the increasing prevalence of coaching centers for CUET preparation, which may disadvantage students from less privileged backgrounds.

Response from DU Administration

Despite these criticisms, DU Vice Chancellor Singh has confirmed that the university will continue using CUET for admissions, as per the guidelines of the Government of India and the University Grants Commission (UGC). Singh assured that the university aims to start the academic session on August 16, 2024, for CUET courses and on August 1, 2024, for other courses.

Admission to Jamia Millia Islamia

Meanwhile, Jamia Millia Islamia is considering an alternative strategy for its UG admissions in 2024 due to the CUET UG results delay. The university may release a separate cut-off and merit list for the 15 courses where CUET scores are used. Although the final answer keys were released last week, the NTA has yet to release the CUET UG scorecards.

Calls for Policy Review

Elected academic council members Mithuraaj Dhusiya and Monami Basu have submitted a note to the Vice Chancellor demanding a review of policies based on the faculty members’ experiences with the CUET-based admission process for undergraduate courses.
