Carbon compounds play a vital role in our daily life. From the clothes, we wear to the food we eat, carbon compounds are present everywhere. Carbon’s atomic number is 6 while its atomic mass is 12.01gmol-1. It is a member of the 14th group of the periodic table. A very important characteristic of Carbon is its ability to form long carbon rings and chains, which is known as catenation. The atoms of carbon form tetravalent bonds. Carbon has many allotropes that have different physical properties but similar chemical properties. Some of the common allotropes of carbon are graphite, diamond, graphene, fullerene, etc.

Ques. 1) If the bottom of a vessel turns black while cooking, it implies that:

a) The food is not cooked completely

b) The fuel is not burning completely

c) The fuel is wet

d) The fuel is burning completely

Answer: (b) The fuel does not burn completely.

Explanation: This is because the fuel does not get enough oxygen to burn. If the fuel does not entirely burn, i.e., there is insufficient oxygen to combine with the carbon to make carbon dioxide, the unburned carbon particles are left behind in the form of black particles known as soot. These soot particles adhere to the vessel's bottom, turning it black.

Ques. 2) Cation is formed when:

a) Atom gains electrons

b) Atom loses electrons

c) Proton is lost by the atom

d) Atom shares electrons

Answer: (b) Atom loses electrons

Explanation: Cation formation occurs whenever there is a loss of electrons from the atom of an element because of which it obtains a positive charge on itself. This indicates the presence of more protons than electrons.

Ques. 3) The I.U.P.A.C name of CH3CH2CH=CH2 is?

a) 3-Butene

b) Prop-1-ene

c) But-1-ene

d) Butyne

Answer: c)  But-1-ene

Explanation: Because CH3CH2CH=CH2 is a molecule with four carbon atoms and a double bond connected to the first carbon, its IUPAC name is But-1-ene.

Ques. 4) Which of the following compounds of carbon does not consist of ions?

a) CHCl3

b) CaCO3

c) NaHCO3

d) Ca2C

Answer: (a) CHCl3

Explanation: Covalent compounds are created when there is sharing of electrons between atoms. Unlike ionic bonding, the two electrons shared by the atoms are attracted to the nucleus of both atoms in covalent bonding, and neither atom loses nor obtains electrons completely. Due to this, covalent bonding occurs when there is direct contact of the atoms with carbon. Such scenarios cannot have ionic bonding. The three chlorine atoms in CHCl3 are all covalently bound to the carbon atom, not to the hydrogen atom. As a result, CHCl3 is a covalent molecule with no ions.

Ques. 5) The property of self-linkage among identical atoms to form long-chain compounds is known as:

a) Catenation

b) Isomerisation

c) Superposition

d) Halogenation

Answer: (a) Catenation

Explanation: Catenation is defined as the process in which there is self-linking between various atoms of an element. This results in the formation of lengthy chains of the same element. Open chains occur when the two ends of the chain are not linked to one another/ are away from one another. Close chain compounds are those where the ends are bonded in a ring (a cyclic compound).

Ques. 6) Which of the following is the molecular formula of cyclobutane?

a) C4H10

b) C4H6

c) C4H8

d) C4H4

Answer: (c) C4H8

Explanation: Cyclobutane is a cyclic hydrocarbon with four carbon atoms connected to two other carbon atoms and two hydrogen atoms.

Ques. 7) Identify the true statements regarding diamond and graphite.

a) They have the same crystal structure

b) They have the same degree of hardness

c) They have the same electrical conductivity

d) They can undergo the same chemical reactions

Answer: (d) They can undergo the same chemical reactions

Explanation: Because graphite and diamond are allotropes of the same element, carbon, they have similar chemical characteristics. As a result, they go through the same chemical reactions.

Ques. 8) How many carbon atoms are joined in a spherical molecule of buckminsterfullerene?

a) 30

b) 60

c) 90

d) 120

Answer: (b) 60

Explanation: Buckminsterfullerene is a carbon molecule that has the shape of a hollow spherical shape consisting of 60 carbon atoms. It has the formula C60. It has a cage-like structure that appears to look like a fused ring.  It is called a truncated icosahedron. It resembles a soccer ball and consists of twenty hexagons and twelve pentagons. Each carbon is bonded to three other atoms. It is a black solid which is immensely being studied by scientists and has a few real-world applications too. It forms a solvent that is violet in colour.

Ques. 9) Which of the following is the major constituent of the liquefied petroleum gas?

a) Methane

b) Ethane

c) Propane

d) Butane

Answer: (d) Butane

Explanation: The major constituent of liquefied petroleum gas is butane. Liquefied petroleum gas is a flammable mixture of hydrocarbon gases, with propane, butane, and propylene being the most prevalent. The latter two, on the other hand, usually make up less than 5% of the total. LPG is a fuel gas that can be found in heating appliances, cooking equipment, and automobiles. It's becoming more used as an aerosol propellant and a refrigerant, replacing chlorofluorocarbons to protect the ozone layer. It is commonly referred to as Autogas when used as a vehicle fuel.

Ques. 10) What is denatured alcohol?

a) Ethyl alcohol that has been made unfit for drinking purposes by adding a small amount of poisonous substance

b) Methyl alcohol which has been made unfit for drinking purposes by adding a small amount of poisonous substance

c) Alcohol having properties of an acid

d) Ethyl alcohol containing 60% of water by weight

Answer: (a) Ethyl alcohol that has been made unfit for drinking purposes by adding a small amount of poisonous substance.

Explanation: Denatured alcohol is ethyl alcohol that has had a small amount of harmful material added to it, such as methanol or pyridine, to make it unfit for drinking. This is primarily done to prevent industrial alcohol from being used for recreational purposes. Alcohol burners and camping stoves employ denatured alcohol as a solvent and as fuel. Hundreds of additions and denaturing processes have been utilized due to the wide range of industrial uses for denatured alcohol. The major ingredient is typically 10% methanol (methyl alcohol), thus the name methylated spirits. Isopropyl alcohol, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, and methyl isobutyl ketone are all typical additions.
