What is MTech in Geotechnical Engineering?

MTech in Geotechnical Engineering is a 2-year postgraduate course divided into 4 semesters. This branch of engineering deals with the application of several principles of soil, rock, and groundwater mechanics for the investigation and studies of subsurface conditions.

This subject deals with the properties of soil as a construction material and makes assessments regarding slope stability and landslide probability. The main aim of this course is to train students working on-site and in offices to conduct proper research so that decisions can be made accordingly.

MTech Geotechnical Engineering helps candidates plan, design and construct foundations as well as support structures. This course also helps to understand the reasons and assess the risk from natural hazards such as earthquakes, landslides, tsunamis, etc to a deeper level.

What do Geotechnical Engineers do?

  • Geotechnical engineers have to travel to the construction sites and carefully study and assess the composition of the soil and formations of the land.
  • They have to make reports about the same and determine the likelihood of future movements in the land.
  • They must also examine the site properly before starting any construction and search for environmentally sensitive features like landfills.
  • They must solve the technical problems that arise during the construction period and make sure that the structure being constructed is safe and stable.
  • The geotechnical engineers also have to supervise the other professionals and crew at the site.

Fees and Financial Aid

It's a government college so the fees are decided by the government for each semester. During my course time the first semester fees is around 10000 and second semester fees is around 5000. The odd semester fees is higher than the even semester fees. Overallthe annual fees is around 15000, excluding the exam fees. The exam fees is approximately 2500 to 3000. There are also many scholarship avilable, such as scholarship such as E-grants , scholarship from SBI and GATE stipend. GATE qualified students get 12000 per month as stipend

Course Curriculum Overview

The course duration is about 2 years. In first semester, their is 1 lab and 5 subjects. In the 2 semester, 1 lab , 4 subjects and a mini project. The 3rd and 4th semester their is decided to do main project and intership. In my opinion, the college should also provide students with the option to choose between an intership or a project.

Actually, I have an interest in soil mechanics so chose geotechnically. and faculty members are very good and all faculty teaching style is very good, understandable. All faculty are Ph.D. scholars. And some are more than 30 years' experience. Yes exam is timely and the question is a little difficult but all questions are solved easily. Review of teaching method is if I rank tha teaching style 10 out of then I rank 10 and class also properly taken by all faculty. Overall all thing is best.

People with different economic background study together with no contempt.

Course Curriculum Overview

The course is well structured. Reasearch work depends on the students itself. If one wanted to do so he or she can pursue it very comfortably. The Lab were a blessing with almost all the instrument available at the students disposal. The exams were ofcourse stressfull as the level of the papers were very high indeed. The day seemed to be hectic sometimes and sometimes chilled.

Ques. How are the hostel and other amenities in the IIT BHU for M.Tech students?

● Top Answer By Aarjav Jain on 02 Mar 24

Ans. M.Tech students (boys) of IIT BHU are allotted Aryabhatta Hostel I (Block A&B) and II (Block C&D). It is a three story building that contains a large common room with TV, and a large dining hall. The hostel mess serves decent quality food. The hostel rooms are quite spacious, and they are two seaters. But whenever there’s a shortage of rooms, three students are allotted for each room, instead of two. But even then, there’s ample space for each occupant. Each block has a garden. The washrooms are cleaned every afternoon, and are equipped with handwash and geysers. The two hostel canteens have all the basic items (including the basic food items), and their timings are 1:30PM-3AM and 7AM-10PM. On each floor, in each block, hot and cold purified water is available in the coolers. Each occupant is given a wooden cot, a table and a chair, and each room contains two cupboards. Decent wifi facilities are made available. The hostel celebrates every major festival with enthusiasm. Overall, the M.Tech hostel at IIT BHU is quite decent.Read more

Ques. How is the M.Tech (civil branch) at NIT Patna if the ESE and GATE preparation is the primary concern?

● Top Answer By Sagar Dikshit on 01 Sept 23

Ans. One of my friends has completed his BTech from NIT Patna. I have an idea about the academic environment and placement opportunities at NIT Patna.  MTech program has a relatively light workload giving you enough time for other things. The academic opportunities are limited for MTech students but plenty for BTech students.  Faculty comprises friendly and learned professors. However, you will have to resort to self-study at some point.  The NIT tag helps you in the initial stages of your career.  Overall, completing MTech from NIT Patna might offer excellent opportunities. The government of India also encouraged the researchers by its schemes directly from NITs. You can also opt for academia and become a teacher or start working in a PSU. The institute will provide you with enough time and opportunities for civil services or IES, Read more
