The Academic is very tough. You have to grind those 4 months real hard in order to get good grades

The Acedemic fees for per semester is 1lakh that makes up 2 lakhs per year for academic fees. And then there is Hostel fees which 30-40 thousand yearly but a little high as a fresher because we need to pay the security fees as well. And the student coming from SC/ST and PWD category has to pay 0 rupees as academic fees but hotel charges remain as usual for the students. Student with the Income certificate of less than 5 lakh we will the given 66 persent scholarship in the academic fees. The waster charges , development fees, lab fees are negligible.

The yearly fee structure at IIT Kanpur for the General category(B.Tech) was approx. 2.3-2.5lakhs per year during my batch, including tuition fees, hostel charges, and other fees like registration, development, and medical. A one time Caution deposit(10000rs) is refendable. The fee has gradually rise over the years. For SC,ST students tuition fees are fully waived.

Fees and Financial Aid:

Total tution fee in IIT Kanpur for general category 2012 was around 3 Lakhs, in 2024-25 it is around 10Lakh. For economically backward family students, MCM scholarship is available. Apart from scholarships, students can also easily avail education loans, there are 3-4 banks inside IIT campus which offer subsidized rates to IIT students.

What does it feel like to fail in a course at IIT Kanpur?

I know a friend who failed a first-semester course at IIT Kanpur. Although it was a minor subject, the entire process was very tiresome.

He had failed a wonderful Morning Exercise (PE101) course. This course is a very futile course wherein twice a week you are supposed to go for sports for an hour in the evening. The ones who are good at sports are selected for the institute sports team, while the rest are sent to NCC.

The worst part about this course is that although it carries no credits, you fail the course if you have less than 75% attendance. Many top rankers had to stay after graduation to complete the course.

My friends had taken leave to represent India at IOI 2007. She failed to maintain the attendance criteria and eventually failed in the course. It discouraged her a lot and she was worried about losing her KVPY scholarship.

She decided to resolve this issue and approached the dean of student affairs (DOSA), who was also the official instructor for this course. Prof. Prawal Sinha assured her that he will be resolving the issue for her. The procedure was indeed troublesome and she had to run from office to office for months. She even wrote to the directors and key meeting DOSA.

Finally, her efforts were fruitful and she managed to change her grades. She was relieved but the entire process tired her out.

There is an additional criterion that comes to play rarely but one should be aware of it. This is

because Students are not allowed branch change if the strength in their parent department falls below a particular number (usually 55%).
