IIT Kanpur has a strange policy of not allowing laptops in the first year. This might sound weird because all assignments and research work are done via laptops. But in reality, you will find enough computers in the labs for everyone.
The major purpose of this policy was to encourage students to socialize and spend less screen time. Developing relations is a crucial part of college life which many pay less importance to because of the increasing technology.
This strategy was adopted to prevent waste of time and utilize your time at IIT to the fullest. Many may find it absurd, but it’s very beneficial, especially for freshers who are prone to distractions.
IIT Kanpur is the college that every engineering student aspires to attend. The life at campus is not a life you forget as it brings in it a lot of memories to cherish. To understand the life a clear description has to be focussed at primary factors which are:
A campus having 1000 acres of land with minimal restrictions and interference. Open Air Theatre (OAT) is one of the features to focus upon. It is equipped with high-tech facilities and maintains an environment of fests. The size, scale and beauty of campus is worth exploring. A huge population of students are the main component of its vibrant life.
Another important element of IIT Kanpur is its hostel life. The campus consists of a close to 11 hostels having great spacious infrastructure. Clubs & councils are also an integral part of lifestyle. The student’s gymkhana is prominently very active.
IIT Kanpur has the toughest curriculum among the IITs. It has an altogether different grading system. There is no strict policy for attendance but certain professors can make it a part of course structure.
A lot of activities take place ranging from sport facilities to clubs & societies are present in the most efficient form in the campus. IIT Kanpur provides a platform for providing enough opportunities for personality development. Students flourish across all domains both academically & professionally.
Overall IIT Kanpur where dreams come true but you need to work really hard to make that happen. A premiere institute which offers all the possibilities for the growth and development of their students. Students even after graduating from IIT Kanpur, still associate with the institution due to its sheer strength and likeability.
Both IIT Guwahati and IIT Kanpur are well-respected institutions, known for their high-quality education and research. Comparing the two is already justified and saying that one institution is becoming the next of the other is more so. Both institutions have their strengths and areas of expertise. Yet, if I was to choose one I would have always gone for IIT Kanpur.
Some points that favor my preference are as follows:
Overall, even if Guwahati was to be compared to IIT Kanpur, it still has a long way to go until it becomes the next IIT Kanpur.
Almost all IITs are excellent engineering colleges providing the best education and amenities. Yet there might be some comparisons that can be drawn based on common aspects like choice, infrastructure, and geographical location. Eventually, it’s a matter of your preferences and not the institute's worth.
For example, if you are someone who considers Academics the most important factor to determine the credibility of an institute, then IIT Kanpur is the best choice for you. It has the toughest grading system and the entire focus is on studies. So if you are excellent in academics, you will remain at the top here.
Both institutes face a certain level of locational disadvantage but IIT Kanpur is still slightly better in this aspect.

All these make IIT Kanpur a unique IIT!
Here are a few unique features of IIT Kanpur that make it stand out among other IITs.
All these are more than enough to combine someone to choose IIT Kanpur over other IITs.
IIT Kanpur has a sprawling campus of 1050 acres and beautiful infrastructure that makes it the dream college of many. It has many unique features that distinguish it from other IITs
Trust me when I say there is more!
The life of an MTech student at IIT Kanpur varies from person to person depending on what activities he involves himself in and his interests and passions. Overall, college life is good and you can even save money from the stipend you receive as an MTech student.
MTech students do not have to pay for hostels and are liable to pay for mess charges and canteen only. There are other food facilities available inside the campus, offering food at subsidiary rates.
Academics are a bit tough and one needs to adopt a focused attitude else they will end up suggesting during exams.
The campus life at IIT Kanpur is very dynamic with many cultural fests (Antarangi, Udghosh) , tech fests (Techkriti) organized by the institute, and many more.
Overall, the life of an MTech student at IIT Kanpur is filled with fun and a lot of opportunities.
IIT Kanpur maintains an excellent record of offering the finest placements. Owing to the strict admission criteria only the best students are granted admission to IIT Kanpur.
M.Tech course offered is very challenging and requires a full-time commitment. Moreover, companies and even professors prefer BTech students over MTech students. At IIT Kanpur, you will be left with little or no time to enjoy the beautiful campus life. The students are so busy with academics that they have no time to explore themselves and get involved in extracurricular activities. You will find BTech students participating in every activity and every event.
The situation of MTech students is very pathetic and people mostly give up right after BTech. Their placements are rarely a matter of discussion and the program itself isn’t given much importance.
