MBBS Admission 2025: FAQs

Ques. How many rounds are there in NEET UG counselling?

Ans. NEET UG counselling is usually conducted in four main rounds. These include Round 1, Round 2, Mop-Up Round, and the Stray Vacancy Round. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts the counselling for All India Quota (AIQ) seats, which cover 15% of total seats in government colleges and 100% seats in deemed universities, AIIMS, JIPMER, and central universities. For the remaining 85% State Quota (SQ) seats, each state counselling authority conducts its own counselling process. In some cases, additional special rounds may be announced if seats are left vacant after all the regular rounds.

Ques. Who conducts the NEET UG counselling process?

Ans. NEET UG counselling is conducted by two different authorities. The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) manages the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats along with seats in AIIMS, JIPMER, central universities, and deemed universities. On the other hand, the counselling for the 85% State Quota (SQ) seats in government and private colleges is conducted by the respective State Counselling Authorities. This means that candidates who qualify NEET can participate in both MCC counselling for AIQ seats and state counselling for SQ seats, depending on their eligibility and preference.

Ques. What is the eligibility criteria for MBBS admission in India?

Ans. To be eligible for MBBS admission in India, students must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed Class 12 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and English as compulsory subjects. General category students need at least 50% marks in PCB, while OBC/SC/ST category students require a minimum of 40%.
  • NEET Qualification: It is mandatory to qualify NEET UG with the minimum percentile set by NMC. For the General category, it is the 50th percentile, and for OBC/SC/ST categories, it is the 40th percentile.
  • Age Limit: The candidate must be at least 17 years old by December 31 of the admission year. There is no upper age limit as of the latest NMC guidelines.

Without meeting these criteria, students will not be eligible to participate in NEET counselling or secure admission in MBBS programs in India.

Ques. Which documents are required for NEET UG counselling registration?

Ans. Candidates need to keep both original and photocopies of documents ready at the time of counselling. The important documents include:

  • NEET UG Admit Card and NEET UG Scorecard
  • Class 10 and Class 12 Mark Sheets and Passing Certificates
  • Valid government-issued photo ID proof (such as Aadhaar Card, Passport, or Driving License)
  • Recent passport-size photographs (as uploaded in the NEET application form)
  • Caste Certificate, Domicile Certificate, or PwD Certificate (if applicable)
  • Provisional or final Allotment Letter (issued during counselling)

Without these documents, candidates will not be allowed to complete the admission process. Therefore, it is important to carry all required papers in the correct format.

Ques. Can I get MBBS admission without qualifying NEET?

Ans. No, it is not possible to get admission in MBBS without qualifying NEET. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has made NEET the only mandatory entrance test for MBBS admissions in India. Every government, private, central, and deemed university accepts students only through NEET UG. Even if a candidate wishes to study MBBS abroad, they must qualify NEET to obtain an eligibility certificate from NMC. Hence, qualifying NEET is compulsory for both studying MBBS in India and practicing medicine after studying abroad.

Ques. What is the main entrance exam for MBBS admission in 2025?

Ans. The main entrance exam for MBBS admission in 2025 is the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG). It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) once a year. NEET UG is a single national-level exam that serves as the gateway for all medical colleges in India, including AIIMS, JIPMER, state government colleges, private colleges, and deemed universities. Without NEET, no student can secure admission in MBBS or BDS programs in India.

Ques. When will NEET 2025 be conducted?

Ans. NEET UG 2025 will be held on May 4, 2025. The exam will be conducted in offline (pen and paper) mode across multiple centers in India by the National Testing Agency (NTA). The official notification, application process, and exam guidelines will be released on the NTA website a few months before the exam. Students are advised to regularly check the NTA and MCC websites for the latest updates regarding exam schedule and counselling dates.

Ques. Is there any limit on the number of attempts for NEET?

Ans. No, there is no restriction on the number of attempts for NEET UG. Earlier, there was a limit of three attempts, but as per the latest rules by NMC and NTA, candidates can appear for NEET any number of times until they achieve a qualifying score. The only condition is that candidates must fulfill the eligibility requirements, such as minimum age, academic qualifications, and percentile cutoffs.

Ques. Are students from open schools eligible for NEET and MBBS admission?

Ans. Yes, students who have completed Class 12 from recognized open schools are eligible to apply for NEET UG and pursue MBBS admission. The only condition is that their qualification must include Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as compulsory subjects, and they must meet the minimum marks requirement. These students, after qualifying NEET, can participate in both All India Quota counselling and their respective State Quota counselling, just like regular school students.

Ques. How much marks should I score in the AIIMS entrance exam to secure an MBBS seat in AIIMS Delhi??

● Top Answer By Muskan Shafi on 30 Mar 24

Ans. AIIMS Delhi doesn’t conduct its own entrance exam for MBBS, instead, it accepts NEET UG for admission to MBBS on an All-India basis. Being the top choice for medical aspirants in India for MBBS, AIIMS Delhi has an extremely high cutoff for all the categories. The marks required for securing a seat for MBBS at AIIMS Delhi vary each year depending on various factors such as the number of seats, the number of candidates appearing, the difficulty level of the exam, and the previous year's cutoffs.  To get a seat for MBBS at AIIMS Delhi, candidates from the general category must aim to score 710+ in NEET UG to be on the safer side for admission. Students from the general category must aim to have an All-India rank within the top 50 to have a sure chance for admission. For reserved categories such as EWS and OBC, candidates must aim to score above 690+ for admission to MBBS at AIIMS Delhi. SC and ST candidates should aim to score 675+ for admission to MBBS at AIIMS Delhi.  Candidates can also check AIIMS Delhi Cutoff in 2023 for MBBS for different categories to get an estimate about the expected cutoff rank in 2024: Category 2023 Closing Cutoff By Rank  General 57 EWS 258 OBC 247 SC 989 ST 1624 General- PwD 1018 OBC- PwD 20882 SC- PwD 77386 ST- PwD 145610Read more

Ques. Which one is the best AIIMS or CMC Vellore for an MBBS?

● Top Answer By Akriti Banerjee on 21 Sept 23

Ans. One of my friends was in a similar dilemma. He considered the following points while making his decision  Most AIIMS undergraduates settle in the US or pursue higher education in top colleges in India while CMC graduates prefer CMC for their higher education only.  Students of CMC are required to do bonds in mission hospitals so their higher education gets delayed. But this instills in them a strong sense of community-oriented healthcare. They tend to work in remote places of India without any personal glory. An AIIMS student can hardly be seen doing community service. AIIMS graduates publish more when compared to CMC graduates. CMC students get better hands-on experience and hence fare better in terms of clinical and Surgical skills. Right from the second year, they start assisting postgraduates in clinical work.  If you are a non-Christian, it will be difficult to go through the entire training without a mission hospital Ultimately, make a choice based on your demographics, preferences, and goals in life. Read more

Ques. Why do AIIMS Delhi students get a very short percentage in an MBBS even though they are intelligent?

● Top Answer By Shree Gupta on 26 May 23

Ans. AIIMS Delhi is one of the most prestigious medical schools in India and is highly coveted among medical students. It boasts an extremely rigorous curriculum and high brand value. However, only a small batch of applicants is able to pass the MBBS exam. This is because the program is highly competitive and even the most genius minds sometimes fail to clear the exam. Intelligence alone cannot determine your success in medical school. As a medical student, you will need hard work, dedication, and also critical for success. The professor itself is very challenging and requires a great deal of dedication, commitment, and a strong desire to help others.Read more
