IGNOU Admissions: Students' Opinion

  • BSc
  • B.Lib.I.Sc
  • BCA
  • MA

Admission to the Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) program at Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is straightforward and primarily online. The eligibility criteria require candidates to have passed their 10+2 or equivalent from a recognized board, with specific subjects or a minimum percentage in certain courses. For instance, the B.Sc in Biochemistry honors requires 50% in PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) subjects. There is no entrance examination for B.Sc admissions, streamlining the process for students.

The application is submitted via the IGNOU website, where candidates must upload Class 10 and 12 mark sheets and other necessary documents. Application timelines are flexible, often extending for late applicants with a nominal late fee. No cutoff ranks or scores apply, but the open learning structure attracts students needing flexibility, such as those preparing for other exams. Exams are conducted biannually with a 3-hour duration for each subject. The university operates on a credit-based system, and the open structure allows students to study remotely, utilizing resources like the e-Sarthi portal.

IGNOU is recognized for affordability, requiring only the registration fee and annual tuition, making it an attractive option for those seeking a distance learning setup. This option is particularly beneficial for students unable to attend regular classes or those from regions with limited university access.

I applied for bsc courses at Delhi Universirty but couldn't make in due to low marks scored in my 12th board exams. The cutoffs were really high, minimum 90% in 2020. The admission process for the BSCG course at IGNOU is fully online. You only need to visit university/study centres in case of any issues with your study material delivery. Eligibility for this course is 12th pass. There is no entrance exam for the course.

Admission:

IGNOU gives admission to almost everyone because it follows an open-learning system. There is no strict entrance exam for most courses, so anyone who meets the basic eligibility can take admission easily. The entire IGNOU admission process can be done online — filling the form, uploading documents, and paying the fees can all be done easily through their website. Eligibility for IGNOU Admission: It depends on the course. For undergraduate courses, you generally need to have completed 10+2. For postgraduate courses (like MA Sociology), you need a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. Some professional or diploma courses may have additional requirements, but most IGNOU programs have flexible eligibility.

I had also applied in DU for B.Sc. (Hons) Statistics but the cutoffs were very high and only a few top colleges offered that course. DU SOL also did not provide B.Sc. courses at that time, so I finally chose IGNOU. The admission process is fully online through the IGNOU website. You need to sign in, upload your Class 10 and 12 marksheets, Aadhaar or other supporting documents, fill personal details, and pay the course fee. For most courses you just need to pass Class 12, but for some courses there is a percentage requirement or specific subjects needed to study in class 12 like in my case maths. My overall admission experience was okay, but the approval process took a long time. In my case, it took almost 3 months to finally get the confirmation of admission.

IGNOU: 45 Answered Questions

How long does it usually take for IGNOU to confirm admissions taken through their online submission system?

Manit JouraPost Graduate Diploma in Applied Statistics, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

First and foremost, you must wait until the last date for admission to that cycle has passed. Following that, you should receive confirmation within two to three weeks. After confirmation, you will receive a message on your registered phone number and via email.

After submitting the required documents, the mail regarding admission acceptance is received within an hour.

People at each IGNOU regional center are extremely helpful. When contacted, the concerned individual reviewed my brother's form and provided details regarding discrepancies as well as a solution.

Overall, it is a quick procedure, and if you have not received your confirmation, please contact your regional center.

If I take admission to IGNOU in January session when will my term-end exam be conducted?

Girish Singh
Anuradha ThakurMCA MAH MSW MPA MAPY MPS from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

If you enroll in the January session:

  • Yearly programs — You must submit your assignments by September 30th and your TEE by December 30th.

  • Semi-annual/semester programs — You must turn in your assignments by April 15th, and your TEE by June 30th.

If you enroll in the July session.

  • Yearly program—You must submit your assignments by March 31st, and your TEE in June.

  • Semi-annual/semester programs — You must turn in your assignments by October 15th, and your TEE in December.

IGNOU exams are held twice a year. In June and December. Occasionally, IGNOU extends the deadline.

There's one more thing to think about. Assignments for the July session and the January session (for the following year of that July session) are the same in IGNOU. Also, when you submit the assignments, make sure that they are the most recent available assignments for your course for the current year in which you are submitting them. For example, if you enrolled in January 2021 and did not complete the assignments in the first year, you must complete the newly available assignments for the next year, which are for the January 2022 session.

Rohini Mishra
Mitanshi VatsMCA MAH MSW MPA MAPY MPS from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

You have two options for cancelling your admission.

  • Send an email to your local centre.

  • Visit the regional centre and request that your admission be cancelled.

  • To find the email address of your regional centre, simply login to IGNOU and select the view address option in the regional centre column.

You will receive information about your regional centres, such as their email address and phone number.

You must include the following information in your email.

  • Your name

  • Your registration number

  • Your program's title

  • Attach your IGNOU ID and Aadhar card (or any other ID for identification, such as a voter ID) and explain why you are withdrawing.

If you are a new candidate who has not yet received your study materials, you will be refunded, but I have no idea if you are an old student. After cancelling your admission, it usually takes 15 to 20 days to receive your refund.

Another thing is that you must check your admission status on your own by logging in to your account because they do not notify you via email or text message.

Are master's degrees from IGNOU acceptable for admission into Ph.D. courses in top universities?

Parth TyagiM.A. in Economics, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

It is not only accepted, but it also falls into the H+ category. The H + classification simply indicates that the degrees earned at this institution are transferable to the university sector. It has nothing to do with a preliminary decision on whether this institution's qualifications can be equated with German higher education qualifications. It should be noted that no equivalence determination or evaluation of higher education institutions in Anabin occurs on the Status down.

Contrary to popular belief, the question of whether a foreign institution corresponds to a German university or a German university of applied sciences is not answered. In the field of higher education, equivalence definitions and assessments are conducted solely in terms of final types and degrees.

What is the purpose of a study center/regional center in IGNOU?

Yashoda JoshiB.C.A in Bachelor of Computer Applications Degrees, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

Every state in India may have at least one IGNOU regional centre. Some people may have multiples. Kerala, for example, has two.

Regional centres provide admission, textbooks, and results, among other things.

Some courses are available for study in regional centres, but they are uncommon. Study centres are typically used for classes as well as the administration of theory and practical exams.

There are numerous IGNOU study centres located throughout the state and the country. Typically, each district in a state has at least one IGNOU study centre. However, this is conditional on the state. One issue is that not all study centres offer all IGNOU courses.

It is possible that the course you want to study is not available at your nearest study centre. As a result, you must choose a study centre based on your desired course. This is due to the fact that a course that requires practical classes requires a study centre with computer facilities, and so on.

You can attend classes at the study centre, and before the exams, the study centre sends all of your information to the regional centre, such as your attendance, assignment submission, and so on. The regional centre then combines all of this information with your term-end exam results to produce a final result.

To get your IGNOU ID card you need to visit your IGNOU regional centre. You can collect it from there. The ID card should have a stamp of IGNOU on it which makes it valid. If you will download your IGNOU ID card online, it does not have the stamp making it invalid. This will be a major problem in your exams.

It is highly possible that IGNOU does not mail your card. Most of the time you will have to visit the regional centre personally to get your IGNOU ID card.

When my term-end examination will take place as I enrolled in MEG 1 IGNOU in the month of July?

Sapna Malik
Sourabh MohantyM.A ECO from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU)

Every year, IGNOU holds its TEE (Term End Examinations) in June and December.

The practical and theoretical parts of the same course must be mentioned separately in the exam form, and the fees are also separate for both. The exam fee for both theory and practical courses/papers is currently 60/- rupees.

Typically, a grace period of 10-20 days is also allowed for the submission of examination forms, with a Late Fee of around 1000/- rupees as of now. The exact end date of the grace period as well as the late fee amount are communicated separately.

If the previous examination's results have not been declared, you should include those courses in the exam form. You may also be exempt from paying the exam fee for such courses. At the time of exam form submission, confirm this with the respective study center. Please keep in mind that the assignment portion of the respective courses must be completed before submitting the exam, or your hall ticket for the examination may be withheld. You are considered an Eligible Candidate once you register for a course and complete the semester/year allotted to that course.

Once you are eligible, you can take the exam in any subsequent TEE (June or December). You can still appear in both TEEs if your course is year-based rather than semester-based. This is a major source of confusion for students enrolled in annual programs.

You may reappear for a paper as many times as necessary to pass it (mind the maximum program duration, however). If the previous examination result was not declared or if you did not receive at least 40% pass marks, you should reappear.

You cannot reappear for that course TEE once you have received the minimum required marks (typically 40%). You must complete ALL courses within the maximum time frame for the Program.
