University of Washington Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
University of Washington admission requirements for Indian applicants centre on academic transcripts, an English proficiency test and, for graduate programmes, department-specific evidence such as GRE or GMAT.
Postgraduate requirements:
- Academic: A four-year bachelor’s degree with 65% or CGPA 6.5/10 (recommended) for most master’s programmes; Foster MBA accepts a three or four-year bachelor’s with 60% or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended).
- English test minimum: TOEFL iBT 4.0 (1-6 band scale, effective 21 January 2026) / 76 (0-120 legacy scale); IELTS 6.0; Duolingo English Test 110. Scores must reach UW by 31 December of the application year.
- Standardised tests: GRE is optional for most engineering and sciences; GMAT (median 705) or GRE for Foster MBA.
- Credential verification: WES or Educational Perspectives evaluation is not mandatory but often requested by individual departments; upload attested transcripts inside the online application.
Undergraduate requirements:
- Academic: Class 12 (CBSE, ICSE or state board) with 80% to 85% (recommended); competitive admits typically show strong performance in stream-aligned subjects.
- English test minimum: TOEFL iBT 4.0 (1-6 band scale) / 76 (0-120 legacy scale); IELTS 6.0; Duolingo English Test 110; applicants may also satisfy via SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 580 or ACT English 22.
- Standardised tests: UW is test-optional for freshmen through Autumn 2027; SAT or ACT can strengthen a borderline file.
Key insight: UW does not accept PTE Academic for undergraduate or graduate admission; Indian applicants who have only sat PTE must register for TOEFL, IELTS or the Duolingo English Test before the December score deadline.
University of Washington Acceptance Rate 2027
University of Washington reports an overall acceptance rate of 43% (estimated), placing it in the moderately selective band among US public research universities. The figure is drawn from third-party admissions databases and covers all freshman applicants; per-programme selectivity is materially tighter for the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science, Foster Business and the School of Nursing.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 43% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2025 | 44% (estimated) | Marginal tightening |
| 2024 | 48% (estimated) | Baseline |
Selective majors such as Computer Science, Foster Business and Nursing admit far fewer applicants than the headline rate suggests. International seats also compete inside a fixed enrolment cap set by the Board of Regents.
Reality check: An Indian applicant with a 90% Class 12 board score, TOEFL iBT above 100 (legacy scale) and strong extracurriculars is competitive for direct-admission engineering; students entering the Pre-Sciences track compete again for Computer Science after year one.

UW stands out for the Public Health and Oceanography subject rankings, and for a location that places graduates one bus ride from Amazon, Microsoft and Meta’s Seattle offices.
University of Washington is the best fit for an Indian STEM applicant targeting Pacific Northwest tech employment, a Public Health master’s or a Foster MBA that returns a $151,116 median salary against roughly $170,000 in total programme investment. The F-1 pathway with 36 months of STEM OPT gives graduates a meaningful runway to convert internships into full-time offers before H-1B lottery deadlines.
It is not the right pick for a student aiming at the QS top 20 tier or one who needs central undergraduate scholarships, since UW awards none to international freshmen; applicants in that profile should also look at the University of Michigan Ann Arbor.
University of Washington FAQs
Ques. Does the University of Washington accept PTE Academic for international applicants?
Ans. No, UW does not accept PTE Academic for undergraduate or graduate admission. The only accepted English tests are TOEFL iBT (minimum 4.0 on the 1-6 band scale or 76 on the legacy 0-120 scale), IELTS (minimum 6.0), and the Duolingo English Test (minimum 110). Indian applicants who have only taken PTE must register for one of these three tests before the 31 December score deadline in the year of application.
Ques. How many hours can Indian students work on campus at UW?
Ans. F-1 international students at the University of Washington may work up to 20 hours per week on campus during academic quarters and up to 40 hours per week during official UW breaks. Verify the current status on each department’s admissions page since policy shifts each cycle.
Ques. What is the University of Washington application fee for international applicants?
Ans. The freshman international application fee at UW is $90 (₹ 8,631) and the graduate application fee is $85 (₹ 8,152) per programme. Fees are non-refundable and payable by credit card inside the online application portal. Fee waivers are available for undergraduate applicants who complete a CSS Profile fee waiver, but graduate fee waivers are limited to specific fellowship applicants.
Ques. Are Indian bachelor degrees accepted for UW graduate admission?
Ans. Yes, UW accepts a four-year Indian bachelor’s degree from an institution recognised by the University Grants Commission or an equivalent accreditation body as meeting the minimum requirement for graduate study. Three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees are considered by Foster and select programmes but are not automatically eligible; a WES or Educational Perspectives evaluation typically clears the equivalence question in these cases.
Ques. Which Indian banks recognise UW for education loans?
Ans. Major Indian public and private banks including SBI, HDFC Credila, Axis Bank, ICICI Bank and Bank of Baroda list the University of Washington on their pre-approved education-loan panels. Unsecured loans up to ₹ 60 lakh are available from private lenders such as HDFC Credila and Avanse; higher tickets typically require a collateral-backed loan with SBI or Bank of Baroda.
Ques. What OPT and STEM OPT rights do Indian UW graduates have?
Ans. All F-1 graduates receive 12 months of Optional Practical Training work authorisation after completing a UW degree. Graduates in STEM-designated degree programmes, which include most Paul G. Allen School and College of Engineering majors, qualify for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving 36 months of legal US employment before an H-1B visa or other status change is required.
Ques. Which UW subject rankings are strongest for Indian applicants?
Ans. UW places inside the QS global top 25 for Public Health, Nursing, Oceanography and Computer Science, and four subjects sit inside the ARWU 2025 global top 10, including Atmospheric Science (#1) and Oceanography (#3). Indian applicants targeting healthcare, environmental science, computer science or public health should treat UW as a top-tier target and shortlist alongside Johns Hopkins and UC Berkeley in the same fields.

- The good thing about the university is that there are lot of smart people to talk to on a regular basis.
Dislikes
- There is nothing major that I dislike but I feel the university can do a bit more to help international students when they first arrive to the university from their home country.
Campus Life
- There are definitely lots of fun clubs but they are mainly for the undergrads. There are nice sports facilities including a big gym and there are two main libraries as well.
Fees
- PhD students don't pay tuition fees.

- In short there is no shortage of such activities, you can find new ones every day.
Fees

Overview
I did not have any. I applied to uw not from abroad but from the USA since I live here! Nope. UW didnt require us to have any interviews- we just used the common application to apply to University of Washington and you got responses in March. Its close by- so I can drive to UW and come back and save money on staying on campus. Since I'm on the pre med track. uw is a great school for that and has its own med school I hope to attend! I have heard that a lot of students use this app called Handshake to get jobs and o have heard its useful. I know some family who graduated from uw and got a job at SPACEX Overall its quite an experience! Its difficult but you have to expect it to be that way. Uw is a top school for stem!
Campus Life
Campus life is okay tbh! Wifi is accessible all over campus and theirs a lot of clubs. I currently commute so i am not currently a part of anything or know the student life as much as those who live on campus.

- I believe the program they have here is very good and complete. They invest a lot of resources, time and effort in research which gives students a lot of options depending on their field. As a university they feel like they care. I also chose because of the location, it’s a city that has become a high tech center and gives many opportunities, as well as the beautify and variety of nature and cultures.
Overview
It has been an amazing experience, filled with support systems that help me accommodate academically as well as culturally and personally.
Campus Life
This university truly has a bit of everything. Thanks to its location, the activities and sports are not limited to what can be done on an interior building or field, but there’s a lot of water sports, hiking, skiing. There’s also groups for any interest you may have, personally I have joined the choir which is very high level. The facilities and libraries are huge and have all the resources you may need, as well as the systems of support to help you find and make good use of those resources.
Overview
The first thing I thought about when choosing a college was its marching band. In high school, I was a member of a core-style marching band. Every year we would spend weeks before school started at band camp to pour our efforts into a unique performance. We competed with other high schools and had tons of fun. Marching band was the highlight of my high school career, and I knew I had to keep being involved. The UW stood out to me for this reason. On top of its great location and academic prowess, it has one of the most entertaining college bands in the country. I applied for 3 other schools in Washington, but I knew this was my first choice. Luckily, my high school prepared me well for the application process and I was not worried. With a 3.8 GPA and AP test scores, I was sure to be accepted. Getting into the UW was exciting because I knew I would continue to pursue my musical interests as well as my academic ones.
Fees
There are scholarships available for many students on campus. The international student center probably has a lot of that information. There are many scholarships for minorities and other groups. Tuition fees increase every year but financial aid is available. I was awarded a scholarship through my major by the art history department. A great way to get scholarships is to use your good academics. That way you can apply with the work you have already done till this point.
Overview
It is a very highly respected college. My parents always wanted me to go to this college, and it is close to home. People who go to this college are able to obtain employment easily because they tend to be highly educated.
Fees
Books are around $825. Room and board run around $11,000. Tuition and fees are about $10,000 for in-state. Other expenses for me were around $3000.
Overview
Because I got in. Originally, I had planned to transfer to Western Washington University. However, after a campus visit to UW, I was in love (like many) with the campus and decided I at least wanted to apply. After hearing back, I decided I wanted to give it a shot.
Fees
Tuition is the biggest fee. There is also a quarterly fee for a quarterly bus pass. The next largest expense is off-campus housing.
