What's New in Binghamton?

18 June 2026: QS World University Rankings 2027 has been released on 18 June 2026. Binghamton University SUNY is ranked #1001-1200 among 1,500+ universities. Check out QS World University Rankings 2027 trend analysis

Binghamton University is a public research university located in Vestal, New York. It was established in 1946 as part of the State University of New York system. It ranks #34 among top US public universities in the US News Best Colleges 2026 edition. Indian students value its "public ivy" designation and its consistent record of graduate placement outcomes.

Binghamton offers over 130 undergraduate and 140 graduate programmes across four academic units. Watson College anchors engineering; School of Management leads business degrees. Harpur College covers arts and sciences, while Decker College handles nursing programmes.

  • US News 2026 Rank: #73 National Universities and #34 Public Universities
  • Acceptance Rate: 38.6% (2026 admission cycle)
  • Intakes: Fall (August) and Spring (January)
  • PG Tuition (International): $23,790-29,340 per year (₹22.79-28.11 lakh)
  • Total Enrolment: 18,768 students with 13% international share
  • Average Starting Salary: $72,438 (₹69.40 lakh) per year

The ranking trajectory has held steady in recent years, with consistent placements in the upper tier of US public universities. Global visibility in QS and Times Higher Education editions remains modest but stable. Research funding and graduate employment metrics continue to drive movement within the US News subrank.

Out-of-state tuition has risen incrementally each year but remains below Ivy League and top-tier private university rates. International applicants can access merit-based scholarships and departmental funding, though federal aid is unavailable. Prospective candidates targeting MBA programmes in the US should note that the School of Management operates a STEM-designated two-year full-time programme.

Exchange rate used: $1 = ₹95.81 as of July 2026

Binghamton University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

The key requirement for Indian applicants is proof of English proficiency alongside academic credentials evaluated to US standards.

Postgraduate applicants:

  • Four-year Bachelor’s degree with strong academics; 60%+ (3.0 GPA / 6.5 CGPA) is the typical minimum
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 80 (0-120 legacy scale), IELTS 6.5 (no band below 5.0), PTE 53, or Duolingo 105
  • Credential verification via WES, ECE, or SpanTran for transcripts issued outside the US
  • GRE required for most Watson College engineering programmes; GMAT or GRE for MBA (waivers case-by-case)

Undergraduate applicants:

  • Class 12 board results with strong marks; 85%+ is competitive for engineering and computer science
  • English proficiency evidence via TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, Duolingo, or acceptable SAT/ACT scores
  • Standardised test scores (SAT/ACT) are optional but strengthen strong applications

All test scores must be less than two years old at the time of application. TOEFL iBT reports also carry the new 1-6 band scale from 21 January 2026; Binghamton continues to publish thresholds against the 0-120 legacy scale.

Key insight: IELTS waivers apply to Indian applicants who completed a full undergraduate degree in English medium at a recognised university. Submit a transcript letter confirming medium of instruction to trigger the waiver review.

Binghamton University Acceptance Rate 2027

Binghamton University reports an acceptance rate of 38.6% for the 2026 admission cycle. This makes it moderately selective within the SUNY system and among top-tier US public universities. Historical acceptance figures fluctuate within a narrow band, with more competitive rates at Watson College engineering and School of Management programmes.

The rate applies to overall applications; individual programme selectivity varies. Computer Science, Nursing, and Business Administration draw larger applicant pools than humanities departments. International applicants often face slightly tighter thresholds because Binghamton must balance the international share of its intake.

Reality check: The headline 38.6% figure does not distinguish between programmes. Indian applicants targeting MS Computer Science or MBA should aim for GPA and test scores comfortably above the stated minimums.

Binghamton University Campus, Facilities and Student Life

The main Binghamton University campus sits on 930 acres in Vestal, New York, about three hours by road from New York City and two hours from Ithaca.

  • Location and transport: Free campus shuttle to Vestal and downtown Binghamton; nearest airport is Greater Binghamton (BGM), with Newark and JFK reached by bus in 4-5 hours
  • Housing: On-campus housing guaranteed for first-year international undergraduates; roughly 55% of undergraduates live on campus
  • Notable facility: The Nature Preserve spans 190 acres of protected forest and wetland adjacent to academic buildings
  • Indian student community: Active Indian Graduate Student Association, cultural events for Diwali, Holi, and Republic Day

What Indian students say: The campus feels safe and self-contained but the town itself is small; weekend trips to New York City are common. Winter cold from December to March catches many first-year Indian students unprepared, so warm layers are essential.

Binghamton University Scholarships 2027

Binghamton offers merit-based scholarships and departmental funding, though none are exclusively earmarked for Indian nationals. International applicants can compete for the same awards as domestic students at the undergraduate level.

Binghamton University Rankings 2027

Binghamton University’s strongest position is its US News subrank among public universities, reflecting steady research output and graduate outcomes. Its QS World University Rankings placement sits in the 1001-1200 band, indicating strong regional presence rather than top-tier global visibility. The Collegedunia Study Abroad rank tracks its overall US public-sector standing.

Binghamton University Placements and Career Outcomes 2027

Binghamton graduates report strong employment outcomes across STEM, business, and health fields, supported by an active career centre.

  • Employment or further study within six months: 89.3% (Class of 2024)
  • Average starting salary: $72,438 (₹69.40 lakh) per year
  • Median earnings six years post-enrolment: $61,621 (₹59.03 lakh) per year
  • Top disclosed recruiters: Google, Amazon, Deloitte, PwC, and JPMorgan Chase
  • Career support: Fleishman Center for Career and Professional Development runs recruiting events, mock interviews, and resume workshops

Insider note: Indian graduates in Computer Science and Data Analytics often place at large East Coast technology firms and consulting practices. Return on investment for STEM masters is quick because starting salaries frequently exceed one-year tuition and living costs combined.

Binghamton University vs Peer Universities

The peer set below covers public research universities on the East Coast and one within the SUNY system. Cells marked NA indicate figures not verified within this session.

Penn State UniversityVerify at QS~55% (market data)NANACross-state peer with larger global alumni network

[Source: Collegedunia peer university snapshots; market medians as noted]

Binghamton stands out for the combination of a moderate acceptance rate, low public-university tuition, and STEM-designated engineering and analytics programmes. Its stronger placement percentage and median starting salary offset the softer global ranking relative to Penn State.

Note: The four SUNY university centres share a common tuition structure, so cost differences among Binghamton, Stony Brook, and Buffalo are minor. Programme fit and city preference should drive the choice.

Binghamton University suits Indian students who want a research-driven US public university experience with STEM career pathways at moderate cost. The total programme investment lands near ₹55 lakh including living expenses for a two-year MS. Median starting salaries in STEM roles recover this outlay quickly for graduates who secure employment within the standard job-search window after graduation.

STEM-designated engineering and analytics degrees unlock the extended post-completion work window, giving Indian graduates a longer runway on the F-1 visa to convert internships into full-time offers. Alumni networks across New York City, Boston, and Silicon Valley open referral pathways for graduates targeting technology and consulting roles after Binghamton.

Applicants seeking a globally top-ranked research brand or an urban Manhattan address will find Binghamton’s rural Vestal setting a poor match. Students wanting a similar SUNY academic profile with a coastal location and a larger international cohort should evaluate Stony Brook University as a realistic alternative before committing.

Binghamton University FAQs

Ques. What English-taught bachelor’s degrees does Binghamton University offer to Indian students?

Ans. Binghamton University offers every undergraduate degree fully in English. Popular options for Indian applicants include Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Nursing, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Accounting. Bachelor of Arts programmes in English, Economics, and Political Science are also open to international students. Applicants must demonstrate English proficiency via TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo unless they qualify for a medium-of-instruction waiver.

Ques. Does Binghamton offer GRE or GMAT waivers to Indian applicants?

Ans. Some graduate programmes at Binghamton have moved to test-optional or test-waived admission for international applicants. Watson College of Engineering typically still requires GRE for MS Computer Science, MS Electrical and Computer Engineering, and MS Data Analytics. The MBA programme accepts GMAT or GRE, with waivers case-by-case for candidates with strong work experience or advanced degrees. Confirm requirements with the specific programme office before applying.

Ques. Can Indian students work part-time on campus at Binghamton University?

Ans. Yes, F-1 visa students at Binghamton can work up to 20 hours per week on campus during the academic term. Full-time on-campus work is permitted during official university breaks and summer. Off-campus employment requires Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training authorisation. On-campus roles include research assistant, teaching assistant, and library or dining hall positions. Many Indian graduate students secure paid research assistantships through their departments.

Ques. How much is the Binghamton application fee for international students?

Ans. Binghamton charges an application fee for both undergraduate and graduate applications submitted through its portal. Fee waivers are available for applicants demonstrating financial hardship through documentation submitted with the application. Some programmes participate in fee waiver initiatives such as CollegeNet or IIE fellowship pathways. Confirm the exact fee for your intended programme on the university’s admissions portal before submitting payment because rates change each cycle.

Ques. How does Binghamton University verify Indian academic transcripts?

Ans. Binghamton accepts credential evaluations from WES, ECE, or SpanTran for Indian transcripts at the graduate level. Undergraduate applicants can submit official transcripts directly with mark sheets from Class 10 and Class 12. WES evaluations typically take four to six weeks; Indian applicants should initiate the process at least two months before the application deadline. All documents must arrive in sealed envelopes or via secure electronic delivery from the issuing institution.

Ques. Which Indian banks provide education loans for Binghamton students?

Ans. HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, State Bank of India, Avanse Financial Services, and Auxilo commonly fund Indian students at Binghamton University. Loan approval typically requires an admission letter, a co-signer or collateral, and evidence of repayment capacity. Federal Bank and Prodigy Finance also support Binghamton graduate students. Indian applicants should compare interest rates, moratorium periods, and processing fees before signing any loan agreement.

Ques. Can Indian dependents accompany students on the Binghamton University visa?

Ans. Spouses and unmarried children under 21 of F-1 visa holders qualify for F-2 dependent visas. F-2 dependents cannot work in the United States but may enrol in part-time academic study or vocational courses. Financial proof for each dependent must be included in the International Student Financial Statement submitted to Binghamton. Adding dependents raises the required cost-of-attendance documentation; confirm current dependent thresholds with the graduate admissions office.

Ques. What is the refund policy at Binghamton for pre-semester withdrawal?

Ans. Students who withdraw before the first day of classes receive a full tuition refund minus non-refundable administrative fees. Withdrawing during the first week yields a partial refund on a sliding scale published each semester by the Student Accounts office. After roughly the fourth week of classes, no tuition refund is issued for that term. Housing and meal plan refunds follow a separate schedule managed by Residential Life.

  • There are 3 campuses: Vestal Campus in Vestal, Health Science Campus in Johnson City and UDC Campus in Binghamton Downtown
  • All facilities a university has library, sports, gym, pools, and a hospital.
  • Spring Fling and U-Fest are the major ones. they are like traditions with concerts, parties, nightlife, etc.
  • I did not participate in other activities but the one i did was the Hack BU Hackathon organised by the student union, where you design a product and then pitch it. The hackathon ran for a long number of hours where you could see ideas coming to life.

Fees

  • The total cost for 2 year or complete course was $44,600, out of which $28,400 was for Tuition and Fees and $16,200 was for living expenses
  • It was charged semester-wise based on how many courses I enrolled in.
  • It was around $600 - $700 per month, which include around $400 rent, $10 wifi, and the remaining groceries.
  • Transportation cost was around $100 per semester, which included bus service, shuttle service, etc.

  • Campuses do have a buzz on most of the weekends. and there are a lot of organisations/clubs that organise festivals and parties. Spring fling which is organised every spring semester. There are 2 campuses. One is in Vestal (main), and the other is in downtown Binghamton.
  • Every weekend night there is a movie scheduled (kind of old, not new). Free food is available. Many tech clubs and coding clubs are there. Indian festivals like Holi and Ganesh festivals are celebrated.

Fees

  • Per semester I was charged USD 14000 considering I chose 3 courses. Fees can be calculated/credited by course. USD 1100~1200/credit and USD ~4500/course. Total cost was around ~45000 USD. University has transportation (free), rent (~500/month), groceries (~100-200/month) and other miscellaneous costs (~100 USD).
  • It differs from person to person, as even 4 courses could be taken instead of 3 per semester in order to manage the master's journey, subject to the advisor's approval.

  • University had 2 campuses, as per my knowledge. Main campus (University union) & pharmacy campus
  • Within the main campus, where most of the things are. There is a separate building for the library where students can study, refer to reference books and do many more things. There are separate sports facility east gym and west gym. There are ample on-campus student accommodations where most of the Undergraduate students live.
  • There is binghamton stadium known as the event centre, where most of the interstate, interuniversity and other level matches happen.

Fees

  • Here, usually the fees is semester-wise but the post-calculation average cost per credit is around $1200
  • Breakdown:
    • Per Semester - 12 credits (4 courses) = $14,400 + $1,400 (insurance) = $15,800
    • Fees are Semester-wise
  • Monthly cost of living
    • Rent – $500 to $550 (private room) with shared kitchen, washroom and other spaces of the house
    • Food & Grocery – $200 to $250
  • TOTAL Cost of living = around $800 to $850

  • There are 3 campuses.
  • Facilities : The majority of events take place on the main campus only, like sports. Almost all the sports are played here, and all kinds of cultural fests are hosted every now and then. Medical services are in a different campus, which is specifically dedicated to that only, but all campuses have their first aid and emergency availability.
  • Some popular events are basketball matches, soccer matches, music fests, welcoming events, Chinese new year, Christmas etc.

Fees

  • Breakdown of fees : Tuition is approximately 36 lakhs. No other charges are there, and insurance is also included in that.
  • Fees charged : Fees are charged semester-wise according to the number of credits you are taking. Also, you get an option to pay the fees in installments.
  • Monthly expenses, including everything from housing to groceries, go up to 600-650 USD. It also depends on your lifestyle.

  •  My college has only one campus at the Vestal, NY
  • The campus has variety of facilities such as library providing books, study places, and computers to work and sports facilities like east gym where there are basket ball courts, swimming, badminton and west gym has a volleyball court, table tennis area etc
  • There are many events taking place in our college like NCAA and hosts various sports like volleyball, soccer and swimming in Fall, Basketball during winter to spring and baseball, softball, lacrosse, wrestling during spring

Fees

  • The tuition is charged as $1000 for each credit. And each subject/class is of 3 credits and the termination project is of 1 credit. We have to complete a total of 31 credits to complete the course implying we need to register at least 10 classes and a termination project/thesis. I have registered for 3 classes in the first semester, 4 in 2nd, 3 classes in 3rd semester and have completed my termination project in 4th semester.
  • The tuition fees is charged semester-wise. The first two semesters are charged with a mandatory minimum fees of 4 classes even though we take only 3 classes in any of the semester.
  • The transportation is included in the fees. Regarding monthly expenses, I used to live off-campus which costed me a monthly rent of $425 including all utilities and maybe a $150 - $200 of food expenses per month totaling an estimated $625 per month or might be more as I have never actually done a calculation

Ques. Which is better for an MS in CS, Suny Binghamton or Florida State University?

● Top Answer By Anil Nadadur on 11 Jan 21

Ans. Both SUNY Binghamton and FSU are highly ranked in terms of salary as per PayScale College Salary Reports. They are ranked well by other reports like emolument as well so you can rest assured about their employment reports. On average, their graduates earn 103,000-113,000 USD . Still, you may have some requirements or reasons of your own to consider so here is a rough comparison of both the universities for their MS in Computer Science: Please note that the salary mentioned is sector wise and it will vary with the choice of your major. Other factors like scholarships, tuition cost, location, residence and expenses will play a major role in your choice.  SUNY Binghamton has an edge over FSU because of: Ease of admission indicated by its higher acceptance rate Average Salary of its CS graduates Overall graduation rate More Scholarship opportunities ranging from 1,000 USD upto 20,000 USD More internships and job opportunities due to its location as compared to a rather isolated location of Florida State University Nevertheless, it can be said that while all both are in the same league, SUNY Binghamton is slightly better in terms of opportunities and average starting salaries.Read more
