What Students Say
Likes
- The Research oriented rigorous Course Work
- The excellent infrastructure the university provides which makes you learn effectively
- The clubs and organizations involving students from all across the globe providing opportunities to explore new interests, build community, leadership skills, network and know about diverse cultures worldwide. My favorite one was the anime club.
Dislikes
- The Course Work, which is hard and demands consistent effort to get good grades
- Mandatory courses that feel irrelevant and don't align with career goals
- Limited scholarships to lift the financial burden off the students
Course Curriculum
- Our's is a research oriented university. I would say the difficulty level of the course curriculum is medium with more focused on theoretical part
- The most positive aspect of the research oriented course work is that you will learn the concepts from the root level which provides you a clear understanding and lays a perfect foundation.
- While the negative aspect is that, as its not more practical it doesn't prepare you for the jobs in the software industry you are looking for and you need to grind yourself by your own.
Admission Experience
-
I have applied to:
1. State University of New York at Binghamton (Admitted)
2. Oklahoma State University (Rejected) - Reason: They got a more better candidate profiles and moved on
3. Arizona State University (Rejected) - Reason: They got a more better candidate profiles and moved on -
In my opinion, apart from the reasons mentioned, I guess I was rejected because of the late applications. While all the others in my circle started applications in October or November, I have started in March.
-
One of the main reasons I applied to this college is because of its research oriented course work, infrastructure, career fairs and the others that I mentioned in things I like in the college
-
The admission process was smooth requiring a minimal effort from my side
-
The GRE was waived off for my college at the time of my admission. However they did ask for IELTS with a score cut-off of 7
-
The admission process was really smooth. Everything was taken care of by the university
-
I have applied to the fall 2022 intake. After working for 2.5 years in software industry I was seeking an upgrade and masters was the perfect choice for it.
-
The admission process took over like 1 and a half months. I applied at the start of march and received my admission offer in the mid April which I have accepted. After that it took about two weeks time to set up everything which was taken care of by the university
Class Schedule
- There are mostly 2 or maximum of 3 classes scheduled in a day. And the classes repeat every alternate day
- The average number of students range from 40 (mostly) to 90 (rare)
- I would say in my batch there were like 80% of the Indian students who enrolled for masters in computer science
- I would say No. As I said before it is a research oriented curriculum and not job oriented. Hence securing a job is student's headach
Faculty
- The faculty members may assist students in finding part-time jobs in the form of assistantships, but for full-time, its the student's headache
- All of them are more focused in their own research work and have an immense knowledge and passion on what they are teaching
- The faculty-to-student ratio is 1:18 and I would say its a pretty good ratio which gives a scope for faculty interaction, increasing quality of education and can have more focus on individual student's performance
Campus Life
- My college has only one campus at the Vestal, NY
- The campus has variety of facilities such as library providing books, study places, and computers to work and sports facilities like east gym where there are basket ball courts, swimming, badminton and west gym has a volleyball court, table tennis area etc
- There are many events taking place in our college like NCAA and hosts various sports like volleyball, soccer and swimming in Fall, Basketball during winter to spring and baseball, softball, lacrosse, wrestling during spring
Part Time Jobs
-
Very few students secure TA's and RA's and GA's
-
Half of the fees is payed off for TA's while RA's have full fee waive off.
-
The other on-campus jobs include event staff, Sodexo dining hall jobs, catering, student assistants etc and the minimum wage is $15 per hour
-
20 hours work per week is the maximum that can be allowed while it is 40 hours during summer break
-
It was easy previously before 2021 less number of students but from 2022 the intake is high and with more number of students it getting tough each semester securing an on campus job
-
All the students woking on campus earn a minimum of $15 per hour. As I said before it was easy previously before 2021 less number of students but from 2022 the intake is high and with more number of students it getting tough each semester securing an on campus job. There is a portal called handshake where students can apply for Graduate assistantships and Sodexo dining hall jobs
Placement
- It is less right now considering the market. As for the within 6 months period I would say only 30% secure jobs
- The salary ranges from $70k to the highest I heard of $320k
- They can find through variety of sources. I personally use https://www.linkedin.com/in/pmvgk/, dice, monster and also university provides a weekly update of what jobs are available in market related to our our course
- Most of them placed as software developers at Amazon, meta, Goldman Sachs, Moody's, etc
Accommodation
- I have used the Binghamton housing groups on Facebook, while also looking for real estate agents and connected with students studying at the university for options regarding accommodation
- My monthly rent was $425 and it included facilities like electricity, water, gas, wifi, heater/AC and it was a furnished house with all the equipment like having a bed, cupboard, closet, a table and a chair in every room while also having basic necessary things like oven, gas stove, fridge, a tv in the house
- It would take a 10-15 min drive to the campus. Most of the Indian students stay at the west side of Binghamton
Exams
- Gre was waived off and Ielts was the only criteria with a cut-off of 7 when I applied for fall 2022.
- The documents required were SOP (Statement of Purpose), 3 LOR's (Letter of Recommendation, I have provided them 2 LOR's from my faculty at my college and 1 LOR from my workplace) and an updated CV/Resume
- There wasn't any interview as part of the application process. But I can say that this university considers candidates who has a working experience in the course they are applying for
Fees
- The tuition is charged as $1000 for each credit. And each subject/class is of 3 credits and the termination project is of 1 credit. We have to complete a total of 31 credits to complete the course implying we need to register at least 10 classes and a termination project/thesis. I have registered for 3 classes in the first semester, 4 in 2nd, 3 classes in 3rd semester and have completed my termination project in 4th semester.
- The tuition fees is charged semester-wise. The first two semesters are charged with a mandatory minimum fees of 4 classes even though we take only 3 classes in any of the semester.
- The transportation is included in the fees. Regarding monthly expenses, I used to live off-campus which costed me a monthly rent of $425 including all utilities and maybe a $150 - $200 of food expenses per month totaling an estimated $625 per month or might be more as I have never actually done a calculation
Scholarship
- I received a Watson scholarship of $1000 which is given to all the students joining the university irrespective of anything or any criteria
- I haven't heard from any other friends or batch mates receiving a scholarship other than the Watson scholarship of $1000
- As far as I know every student joining the university as a engineering masters student receives the Watson scholarship
