What Students Say
Likes
- Good management as we receive regular updates about daily and weekly events.
- Safe and didn't observe any racist threats on campus.
- Supportive staff in ISSS, admission center (probably every where you go).
Dislikes
- Few of good professor in mechanical engineering who can guide and teach you with passion
- Less pay as a research aid or RA
- Less opportunities as a master's student to get TA or RA position (need to convert to PHD)
Course Curriculum
- My course difficulty levels are somewhat between moderate and hard and courses are a good combination of practical and mathematical calculations.
- Positive aspect of my course is mathematical calculations involved which I am good at, my course also includes some projects where I get a chance to use and learn different CAD software's.
Admission Experience
- State University of New York at Binghamton (Admitted), North Carolina State University (Admitted), University of Delaware (Admitted), University of Bridgeport (Admitted), UIUC (Rejected)
I Confirmed my admission for Binghamton University. - I got rejected by UIUC because I didn't give GRE, instead I choose to give IELTS another reason would be my cumulative GPA was 3.54 and they may have higher expectation.
- My university is ranked 73 nationally, in addition to its graduation percentage of 82%, acceptance rate of 42% and tuition fee and cost of living is less compared to other universities with similar reputation. Also found courses and specifications relevant to my internet. I also got an option to get credits by doing an internship. Also got positive reviews from my seniors who graduated or are still studying in this University.
- I applied for the fall 2024 intake which is considered the best intake when majority of students come.
- Reason - most of the courses are open during that semester, can do upcoming summer internship, will graduate by may which is prime time for hiring students, whether it is good and easy to get an apartment for rent.
- It took me around 3 months to complete my admission process, started my application around Jan start and got acceptance by Feb end and accepted it by March end 2024.
Class Schedule
- Typically 2 class a day around 2 hr per lecture.
- Average number of students in my class is 15.
- No Indian master's student, only 2 India PHD students.
Faculty
- 1:10 is the estimated facility to student ratio in my course. This doesn't influence much as self study is the major part and you can use email to get in touch with the professor in case of doubt or set up a meeting to discuss project ideas and help.
- Some professors really have a good way of organising their lectures and notes with best practical projects. On the other side there are a few professors who gives slide presentations and just conduct exams or some new professors who are getting use to teaching.
- Professor Mir Razavi is the faculty whose course structure and teaching methods really impressed me.
Campus Life
- Campus has many sections which includes Engineering building, Science 1,2,3&4, main and science library, university union which has cafe, food, gaming zone and different activity or event area.
- Campus in the woods is an area where pantry and more food options are available. There are hostel rooms too. Recreation activities also takes place in an area which is beyond campus in woods. There is a west and east gym on campus. ITC is an area where my lectures and research work takes place.
- GSO is an organisation which arranges activities for students.
Part Time Jobs
- Few students gets an opportunity to be a TA or GA. PHD students are generally preferred for those positions over master's students. Majority of students work on campus to manage their living expenses.
- 16 to 22$ per hr is pay range.
- In our universe there are lots of on campus opportunities including a dining hall under Sodexo, Starbucks, taps and many more.
- Maximum hours per week is 20
- It is easy as many students get on campus.
- Indian students earn on an average of 15.5$ per hour. It's challenging to do part time with 4 course work as there is no time left to do any extra skill development and internship application. In addition to it part time jobs may be hectic and may effect your percentile. Usually students apply via handshake or write a mail to the hiring team regarding their interests. But the most easy and quick way is reference.
Placement
- Here in us no university will provide a direct job, it's all about reference or our application and skills. University definitely helps us out to build a good resume and shares various links to start of with our application.
- Students usually make use of social media websites such as LinkedIn, handshake, indeed etc. Majority of batchmates have been placed in mid or large-scale companies like Raymond, Nvidia, Tesla, Amazon etc.
Accommodation
- I found my accommodation in a WhatsApp group created by Binghamton University students. Specifically for accommodation.
- Monthly rent was $475 including utilities but during winter it goes up to $520.
- Just look for a place near the grocery store and bus stop.
- My house is 15 min to campus via bus and most of the Indian students stay near Main Street. If you manage to get car then it's 10 min.
Exams
- IELTS with minimum 6.5 score. Document required are i20, bank statement i.e proof of tuition fee which also includes loan sanction letter. At least 3 LOR from your professor or manager. Your up to date CV and SOP which must be written to present yourself as a worthy candidate.
- No, there was no interview needed to get admitted to Binghamton University.
Fees
- Tuition fee is divided as non resident grad fee, international student insurance, technology fee, academic excellence and success fee, health services, college fee, transportation, activity, recreation fee.
- Fees are charged semester wise (depending on number of credit)
- My estimation of monthly expenses is $520 rent including utilities, $100 grocery, $30 other expenses.
Scholarship
- Yes, I received a $1000 scholarship for having a good GPA in my undergrad, it's called watson graduate funding.
- Not all batchmates received this scholarship, university has limitations for such funding. Some friends got TA and RA and are being funded by University which can be considered as a scholarship.
- On an average 80 students received this scholarship.
