- Median MS Starting Salary: USD 78,000 (INR 74.73 lakh) — US market median for public research MS graduates
UD has slipped from #498 in QS 2024 to #575 in QS 2027, a moderate slide, yet it holds a stable Times Higher Education 401-500 band and the ARWU 201-300 band it has occupied since 2021. Subject strengths run deeper than the world figure suggests. ARWU 2025 places Oceanography at #43 and Chemical Engineering in the 51-75 band, the two tracks that anchor UD’s research profile.
Graduate tuition moves to USD 1,149 per credit for 2026-27, up from USD 1,116 in the prior year, a 3 percent lift. Indian applicants budgeting the two-year investment must add mandatory fees, health insurance and Newark cost of living to sticker tuition. F-1 visa costs, SEVIS fee and pre-arrival expenses fall outside published tuition and are set out in our Study in USA guide for Indian applicants.

University of Delaware Admission 2027
The University of Delaware runs a decentralised graduate admissions model: each academic department sets its own deadlines, requirements and decision timeline. Fall is the primary intake for Indian applicants. The full application checklist and department-level dates sit in the dedicated admissions guide.
| Milestone | Date | Notes for Indian Applicants |
|---|---|---|
| Next application deadline (Fall 2027) | Varies by programme; Expected December 2026 to February 2027 based on prior cycles | Verify each programme’s date on the udel.edu Graduate Programs directory |
| WES credential verification | Start 6 to 8 weeks before your programme deadline | Course-by-course evaluation is mandatory for Indian transcripts |
| Decision release | From mid-March 2027 for most programmes | Rolling review; earlier submissions often decided sooner |
| Programme start | August 2027 (Fall) or January 2027 (Spring) | SEVIS payment and F-1 visa slot booking begin post-I-20 issue |
Planning note: UD’s Graduate College application fee is USD 75 and is not usually waived for international applicants. Batch your WES evaluation and English test score reporting before submission to avoid rolling-review disadvantage.

University of Delaware Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Indian applicants must meet three parallel thresholds at UD: academic eligibility, English proficiency and standardised testing where required.
PG Requirements
- Academic: Four-year Indian bachelor’s with a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (approximately 65 percent) from a recognised university; transcripts evaluated by WES on a course-by-course basis.
- English proficiency: Minimum TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale), with 100 required for select competitive programmes; IELTS Academic 6.5 overall, with 7.0 for the higher-bar programmes; Speaking sub-score at least 6.0.
- Standardised tests: GRE or GMAT is department-specific. Waiver decisions rest with each programme’s faculty admissions committee; MS CS, MS Data Science and MS Cybersecurity have moved most applicants to test-optional but confirm on the programme page.
- Additional: Statement of purpose, three letters of recommendation and financial documentation covering the first academic year.
UG Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 completion with strong scores; competitive applicants typically show 80 percent or higher in the subject stream matching the intended major.
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS 6.5; applicants in the 70 to 78 TOEFL range may qualify for the Accelerate-U Delaware bridge programme.
Key insight: UD accepts IELTS at parity with TOEFL, and Duolingo is not currently listed among accepted tests on the Graduate College test scores page. Indian applicants relying on Duolingo alone should switch to IELTS or TOEFL well before the deadline. For work-authorisation planning, review the OPT guide for F-1 students.
University of Delaware Acceptance Rate 2027
The University of Delaware acceptance rate is around 72 percent (estimated figure), drawn from third-party market trackers. UD does not publish an official aggregated acceptance figure; departmental selectivity for graduate STEM tracks runs notably tighter than the university-wide number.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 (estimate) | 72 percent | Stable |
| 2023 | 73 percent | Marginal easing |
| 2022 | 71.4 percent | Baseline |
Indian graduate applicants should read the headline number with caution. Competitive STEM tracks such as MS Computer Science and MS Data Science filter more sharply on GPA, project record and letters than the aggregate rate suggests.
Reality check: A 72 percent acceptance rate does not translate into a low bar for STEM MS admits from India. A 65 percent Indian bachelor’s converts to roughly 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, the floor, not the target. Applicants clearing 70 percent with published projects and strong recommendations sit in the realistic admit band.

University of Delaware Campus, Facilities and Student Life
The University of Delaware’s main campus sits in Newark, a compact college town of 33,000 residents, 60 minutes south of Philadelphia and two hours from Washington DC. The campus spans 1,000 acres with SEPTA and Amtrak stations at its edge.
- Location and transport: Newark train station lies at the campus edge; direct Amtrak service to New York, Philadelphia and Washington DC.
- Housing: On-campus housing is not guaranteed for graduate students. UD Graduate Student Housing rates run USD 900 to 1,300 monthly; most Indian graduate students choose off-campus shared apartments.
- Notable facility: The Harker Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory (ISE Lab) anchors research collaboration between engineering and life sciences.
- Indian community: The Indian Student Association and Sanskriti host Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events, giving new arrivals a ready social base.
What Indian students say: Newark is quiet compared with Philadelphia, which some enjoy for study focus and others find limiting for weekend life. Public transport within Newark is patchy; a bicycle or shared-ride approach works better than depending on the campus shuttle. The Indian grocery run typically means a 20-minute drive to Wilmington.
University of Delaware Scholarships 2027
The University of Delaware funds graduate students primarily through departmental Graduate Assistantships rather than named external scholarships. Assistantship offers usually accompany the admission decision; separate application is rare for Indian graduate applicants.
| Award | Type | Value | Eligibility | Deadline |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Graduate Teaching Assistantship | Tuition waiver plus stipend | Full tuition waiver plus stipend; verify on department page | Merit-based, allocated with admission for select PhD and MS applicants | Automatic with application |
| Graduate Research Assistantship | Tuition waiver plus stipend | Full tuition waiver plus stipend; verify on department page | Tied to faculty research funding; strongest fit with prior research record | Automatic with application |
| Unidel Distinguished Graduate Scholar Award | University-wide fellowship | Verify at udel.edu Graduate Financial Aid | Top-tier incoming PhD applicants nominated by department | Nomination-based |
Planning note: Assistantship allocation for Indian applicants concentrates in PhD tracks and research-heavy MS programmes such as MS Chemical Engineering and MS Electrical and Computer Engineering. Coursework-first master’s such as MS Business Analytics rarely fund international students beyond partial merit awards.
University of Delaware Rankings 2027
The University of Delaware’s strongest global position is its ARWU 201-300 band, held stably since 2021. Collegedunia Study Abroad 2026 rankings place UD at #364 globally and #165 in USA out of 824 tracked institutions.
| Ranking Body | 2027 | 2026 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|

University of Delaware vs Peer Universities
The peer set below matches UD’s public research profile and non-resident tuition band. Salary and acceptance figures are market medians unless a university publishes an official employment report.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Acceptance Rate | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD / INR lakh) | Median Salary (USD / INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| University of Delaware | #575 | 72 percent | 27,576 / 26.42 | 78,000 / 74.73 | Strong Oceanography and Chemical Engineering research |
| Penn State University | #93 | 55 percent | 35,000 / 33.53 | 85,000 / 81.44 | Larger alumni network, broader research portfolio |
| University of Pittsburgh | #141 | 67 percent | 34,500 / 33.05 | 82,000 / 78.56 | Medical research and healthcare corridor placements |
| Temple University | #711-720 | 80 percent | 24,000 / 22.99 | 72,000 / 68.98 | Philadelphia location, lower fees |
| University of Maryland Baltimore County | #801-850 | 78 percent | 25,500 / 24.43 | 75,000 / 71.86 | Cybersecurity and biotech clusters near DC |
| George Mason University | #521 | 90 percent | 36,700 / 35.16 | 80,000 / 76.65 | DC-adjacent, cybersecurity strength |
UD’s edge sits in Newark’s low cost of living paired with corporate density in the Wilmington to Philadelphia belt. Total two-year investment lands 15 to 20 percent below Penn State and Pittsburgh, with comparable STEM OPT eligibility.
The University of Delaware fits Indian students who want a Top 100 US public research university without the cost profile of a flagship state system. The two-year MS investment of about USD 100,000 all-in maps against a market median starting salary of USD 78,000, giving a payback horizon of 18 to 24 months post-OPT for STEM graduates who land at-market roles.
Indian-specific advantages start with the STEM-designated master’s list that unlocks 36 months of post-completion OPT, verifiable via the current US student visa guide. The Wilmington to Philadelphia corridor concentrates financial services, pharma and life sciences hiring, giving Indian graduates a shorter commute-to-interview loop than campuses in less dense markets.
UD is not the right pick for applicants targeting Ivy or Top 50 QS brand strength, or for those who need guaranteed funding for a coursework-heavy MS. Penn State University offers a stronger QS position and larger alumni base for candidates comfortable with a higher total budget and a more selective admissions bar.
University of Delaware FAQs
Ques. Is the University of Delaware a STEM-designated university for Indian MS applicants?
Ans. Yes, UD’s MS Computer Science, MS Data Science, MS Cybersecurity, MS Business Analytics and Information Management and its core engineering master’s carry STEM CIP-code designation. Graduates in these tracks qualify for 12 months of initial OPT plus a 24-month STEM extension, giving 36 months of post-completion work authorisation. The Lerner MBA is not STEM-designated but a STEM concentration exists within the MBA structure; confirm the specific concentration on the Lerner College page.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time while studying at the University of Delaware?
Ans. F-1 students at UD may work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during term and 40 hours per week during official breaks. Off-campus employment requires prior authorisation through CPT, OPT or economic hardship rulings from the Center for Global Programs and Services. On-campus positions include research assistantships, library roles and dining services. Off-campus work without USCIS authorisation risks status termination and future visa denial for Indian applicants.
Ques. Does the University of Delaware waive the GRE or GMAT for Indian applicants?
Ans. GRE and GMAT waiver decisions rest with each academic department at UD, not the Graduate College. MS Computer Science, MS Data Science and MS Cybersecurity have moved most applicants to test-optional review. The Lerner MBA offers GMAT and GRE waivers for candidates with strong quantitative undergraduate records, three or more years of professional experience or an existing graduate degree. Verify the current waiver policy on each programme page before submission.
Ques. What is the application fee at the University of Delaware and can it be waived?
Ans. The University of Delaware Graduate College application fee is USD 75 for the current cycle. Fee waivers are rare for international applicants and are usually reserved for domestic candidates with documented financial hardship or participation in specific US pipeline programmes. Indian applicants should budget the USD 75 fee per programme applied to and pay via credit card through the Slate application portal at the point of submission.
Ques. Which Indian banks offer education loans recognising the University of Delaware?
Ans. State Bank of India, HDFC Credila, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank and Bank of Baroda all list the University of Delaware within their overseas education loan eligibility panels. Loan limits usually stretch to INR 1.5 crore for STEM graduate programmes with UD’s I-20 as the anchor document. Non-collateral loans from NBFC lenders such as Prodigy Finance and MPOWER Financing also cover UD, subject to programme approval and cosigner or income criteria.
Ques. What documents does the University of Delaware require for F-1 visa financial proof?
Ans. UD’s Graduate College requires proof of funds covering the first academic year, typically USD 55,000 to 60,000, before issuing the I-20. Accepted documents include a chartered bank statement dated within six months, an education loan sanction letter from a recognised Indian lender or a scholarship award letter from a government body. Sponsor affidavits require a notarised affidavit of support plus the sponsor’s bank statement and relationship proof.
Ques. Does UD accept Duolingo English Test scores for international admission?
Ans. The University of Delaware Graduate College test scores page currently lists TOEFL iBT, TOEFL paper-based and IELTS Academic as accepted English proficiency evidence. Duolingo English Test is not featured on the standard graduate accepted list; select departments may accept it on a case-by-case basis. Indian applicants planning to rely on Duolingo should confirm directly with the target department before booking the test, and default to IELTS or TOEFL to avoid last-mile rejection.
Ques. How long does the University of Delaware take to release admission decisions?
Ans. Most graduate departments at UD release Fall decisions from mid-March 2027 onward, though many run rolling review with earlier offers to strong applicants who submit ahead of the priority window. PhD decisions typically follow department interview loops in February and March. Indian applicants who submit complete files by early January can expect I-20 issuance within four to six weeks of decision, giving adequate lead time for F-1 visa slot booking.

- Unlike many universities, on campus employment exists.
- Facilities like Gym, Swimming pool, Library are accessible and very big.
- To be very precise, University of Delaware is safe to come up to - very low crime rate.
Dislikes
- Mid-level expensive university with no scope for scholarship for international students.
- Less number of Indian restaurants, in comparison to other states. Food, unless you know how to cook, is a problem.
- It feels like a small town or may be village as there are limited options to enjoy within the city without a car - Only one shopping mall, not too many movie theaters or entertainment options, only 2 Indian stores.
Campus Life
- There will be events going on across the campus every day. You just have to make time for them; most of them are sponsored, so you will receive free food and some goodies like pens, caps, T-shirts, bags, etc.
- We have almost all the facilities needed, like an athletic center, Library, Gym, Swimming pool, and community groups. We also celebrate festivals on campus like Diwali, Garba, and Holi.

- It is credit-based. Number of credits needed to finish for a particular degree changes from course to course. One credit cost is $1028. I finished 30 credits for my degree.
- There are a few mandatory fees, like the International Service Fee (I was charged $180 per semester) and Health Insurance (differs from semester to semester, around $1500 - $1600).
- Monthly expenses differ from $500 to $1000, based on your preferred way of living (shared room/private room, etc.).

- Safe campus and surroundings
Dislikes
- Mediocre reputation
- Too relaxed peer group
- Less funded opportunities such as TA/RA within ECE Department for MS students
Campus Life
- My college has three campuses: north campus, south campus and main campus.
- The college has a library and a sports facility that includes a stadium, gym and courts to play various sports and swim. It also includes medical services facilities. I am not sure about specific campus festivals.
- There is the Diwali and Holi party that I look forward to and International coffee hour every week.
- There are also occasional events by the Indian Graduate Student Association that I attend. There are also football matches that people follow here very often.
Fees
-
$1,069 per credit (9 credits for the first 3 semesters and 3 credits for the last semester). Total of 4 semesters. So for each of the first 3 semesters, it is $11,116.64 per semester. An extra $1495.64 every semester is for health insurance, a wellness fee and a facility fee charged by the university.
-
It's charged semester-wise and based on credits.
-
I spend $1000 every month. $700 is for e-bill, rent, internet and water bill.
$300 is mostly for food and eating out. Very negligible transportation costs because a university shuttle is present and the public bus system is strong and very affordable. Just $1 to any destination per trip.

Fees
- The fee depends and varies to individual courses. The criteria credit per hour and it multiplies the number of credits you have taken in that semester.
- The additional charges are insurance and living fee depending on type of housing you have taken.
- The fees are charged semester-wise in this college.
- The monthly estimate of expenses is around 600 - 800 USD. The transportation is free near campus.

Overview
I have lived in Delaware my whole life and love it here! I love the master's speech pathology program at the University of Delaware too, you start working with clients two weeks into the program and they value experience over classroom learning.
Fees
Aside from tuition, there was also a housing/food fee if a student chose to live on campus. This fee included both housing and dining hall access. Students are also charged a health fee which gives them access to the health center and gym.
Overview
Wide range of academic programs and a fantastic marching band. It was important to be able to keep music in my life as well as academics! I was even able to minor in piano while studying neuroscience.
Fees
Both tuition and room and board were paid by the semester. Other fees included a technology fee and wellness center fee. I may be missing a couple, but they are all on the university's website.
Overview
I chose the university of Delaware due to the close location to home (3 hours) and the campus environment. I really liked how it had a college feel but also didn?t feel isolated from the world like some other colleges felt.
Fees
The tuition is fairly expensive for an out of state student. Books aren't expensive if you get them through third party websites.
