MAKAUT: 52 Answered Questions

How does one score good marks in MAKAUT?

Aparna Das
Arnav RoyLives in Kolkata, West Bengal, India

My friend recently passed out from MAKAUT and shared the strategy to score good marks here based on his experience. A few points to follow are

  • Writings answers of Organizer will fetch you more marks than if you write someone else's answers.
  • The answer sheet comprises 32 pages and the more pages you fill, the more marks you will be getting. In case you don't know and answer just write anything faintly related to it rather than leaving it unattempted.
  • Make sure your handwriting is neat and beautiful. Highlight the important parts with a different ink to make it more appealing.
  • Attempt all MCGs rather than just 10
  • Never leave any answer blank always fill in the blank same and you will get a few marks for sure.

If you follow these tips sincerely, you might get an 8+ CGPA.

What are the passing marks out of 70 for MAKAUT?

Raktim Tarafdar
Sushmita BanerjeeB.Tech from Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University Of Technology

There are no fixed passing marks out of 77 although you have to score above 40 marks overall. Scoring less than 40 will get you an F Grade which is not acceptable. The passing marks also depend on the minimum marks your professor will be giving in internals.

Usually, professors always give at least 10-12 marks in internals so to stay on the safe side, try to score at least 30 marks in the theory paper out of 70. If you follow this technique, you won't have a single backlog in 4 years and get a BTech degree with 8+CDGPA.

How good is MAKAUT for its students?

Aparna Das
Sushmita BanerjeeB.Tech from Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University Of Technology

MAKAUT is an average university, especially for those who are extremely talented and want to get placed in core companies. All their talents will be left unharnessed here. It is bearable only for those who prefer mugging up the concepts o somehow make it into big IT shots like TCS, Wipro, Cognizant, and Amazon.

Here are a few reasons why I will never recommend anyone to ever join MAKAUT

  • Neither of MAKAUT colleges is visited by Core companies except for KGEC and IEM. A few companies that visit are below average and offer poor roles and packages. The good companies that visit don't find any suitable candidates due to lack of proper education and thus leave without any offers.
  • The core streams are no good either considering the deteriorating infrastructure of most MAKAUT colleges. The colleges have two lathes out of which one might be not working for the Mechanical dept. and the electrical departments have broken motors and Circuit boards.
  • The core branches have underqualified faculty and are least interested in teaching.
  • The faculty dont encourage students to involve in project work and all the expenses related to projects are borne by the students alone.
  • The syllabus is vast yet very lacking and even if you study everything you will not be qualified to crack any government exam or interviews. The syllabus lacks the basic concepts of engineering and thus even toppers of MAKAUT find it difficult to crack GATE, ESE, and other interviews.

However, there are a few exceptional MAKAUT colleges like KGEC and IEM. At KGEC, the faculty and facilities of the mechanical and electrical departments are way better than other colleges. Also, here you get Government funds if you work on projects under HODs and some teachers.

Ultimately, MAKAUT is an affordable choice for Engineering in IT, Comp. Science, ECE, and related streams.

Is there any CGPA to percentage calculation formula for MAKAUT (formerly known as WBUT) at present?

Sushmita BanerjeeB.Tech from Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University Of Technology

Yes, there is a fixed formula for CGPA to percentage conversion at MAKAUT. It's pretty simple and you can use it even if you are not very good at Math. The formula is Percentage=(CGPA - 0.75)*10

let us understand this through an example. If you have a CGPA of 8.25 then your percentage would be : (8.25 - 0.75)*10

Calculating the above expression, the percentage is equal to 75%. This formula is applicable to every CGPA even 10. A 10 CGPA will be around 92.5 %. The university through its official website has released the following details to make things simpler.

What should I do to pass in backlog subjects of WBUT (now MAKAUT) ?

Sushmita BanerjeeB.Tech from Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University Of Technology

My friend also had a backlog in two subjects and the following strategy helped him clear the backlog easily.

  • Learn the formulas: Practicing is not enough. You need to mug up the formulas so that even if you are stuck on a question, you can write the formula that will fetch you a few marks based on step marking.
  • Last year’s questions: Practicing previous years' question papers is very crucial as there are high chances of repetition of questions.
  • Understand the concepts through video: Instead of reading and learning big answers, watch knowledgeable videos that make you understand the concept easily.
  • Notes: After completing every chapter, make important notes. This ensures effective revision during exams and saves time.
  • MCQ & Short notes: Usually MCQs and short notes are repeated from the last year. So go through them. These are scoring and reducing the chances of backlog.

Lastly, stay motivated and positive and you are good to go.

How is MAKAUT (AKA WBUT) ? Is it a good technical university or a shoddy one?

Shweta RoyLives in Calcutta

I had a word with my sister studying at MAKAUT and she shared her experience of a 5th sem lab exam on the Design and Analysis of Algorithms.

The exam was for 100 marks and the syllabus comprised the following topics; Bubble sort, Selection sort, Quick sort, Merge Sort, Fractional Knapsack problem, Heap sort, and Implementation of Floyd Warshall’s algorithm. Except for the last topic, the entire syllabus was like that of a first-year student. It wasn't challenging, rigorous, and on par with the industry standards. In fact, anyone with basic knowledge of programming would have been able to give this exam.

The institute has this paper set for the final year. Things at MAKAUT are more disappointing than they seem. After conducting such monotonous and easy exams they expect the students to sit for interviews by big companies. And here we are, in the penultimate year with less than a year left for job interviews, doing things that we are expected to do in the first year itself.

I will leave the rest for you to ponder upon whether MAKAUT is a good technical university or not.
