Course Curriculum Overview

4

Geology curriculum was quite comprehensive. it mainly focused on main concepts but it needed improvement in modern advancement and practical subjects. topics such as mineralology, petrology, structural geology, paleontology, Geophysics were very important in choosing this course for me as the provided a strong foundation for geology to study for my future. as I have told earlier that field work opportunities were quite limited there were only three times that we had gone to a field trip in 3 years. But I learned about field mapping, identification of minerals , site visit all these things give me skills and hands- on experience. the course offers various opportunities so in sectors like a environment , mining , oiling & gas etc. there are also opportunities in remote sensing and GIS sector which is geographic information system, my love for remote Sensing and GIS let me to opt GIS for my future career. In our last semester we were taught about environment geology economics geology petroleum geology in which we learnt about various types of minerals which were used in the economy in the industry etc. one of our seniors even went her to Bhabha atomic research centre. during the course we also learnt about hydrogeology many of my classmates are pursuing their research studies in hydrogeology. I wish there was a subject related to climate geology as well but it was not there. the curriculum can be updated to some extent like use of digital geological mapping, more laptops and computers should be there. even though there are some internship opportunities but there should be an increase in the number of internships provided to the students in the field of mining, gas or Environmental sectors with ONGC GSI etc.

Placement Experience

3

the placement opportunities are limited to in computer science students and BBA students. so, there are only internship opportunities for geologist students and art students and no iplacement opportunities. so in my course people either go for masters and then go for research, PhD, clear the net exam and become professor or they go for public sector with the help of giving competitive exams.

Fees and Financial Aid

So, I took admission in Ram Lal Anand College, Delhi University. This is in Anand Niketan, South Delhi. During the time of admission i paid around ?22000 (so this was the admission fees which includes everything the tuition fees, caution fees, registration fees, development fees, lab fees, etc.) than in my second semester i paid around ?3000. Similarly for my remaining semesters i paid around ?6000 for each semester There were scholarship available for SC/ST and EWS students. One of my friend received ?10000 to ?15000 scholarship . So, overall the course was affordable plus the benefit of being a government institute.

Campus Life

5

Overall experience of my college was quite good but since I was only able to spent 2 years of my college life on campus and due to Covid -19 I have to come back to my home so I only a small part of my life in college but even though I made full use of it I participated in various clubs there are many clubs like dance club, singing club, acting club, NCC (even for girls), environment club. there is a separate room for girls sir which is called girls common room so you can get ready or you can rest for some time all other facilities are provided there . so, it's one of the good things. the office staff as I have told earlier is very very helpful they do not make you wait and lines the immediately resolve your issue as soon as possible and they are quite supportive. the teaching staff is also good but we need to recruit more young teachers who do not believe in traditional way of teaching and use modern way of a teaching or showing presentations etc. the canteen facilities also very good there are different kind so foods available for everyone Also the food is also tasty. sports and extra curricular activities are also there you can play during the break time. there are annual fest, College fest , club fest freshers party and other events which are held so you will not get bored.

Admission

so I have also applied to other colleges like Hansraj College which is in North Delhi which is also affiliated to Delhi University but my cut off was 90 so I was not able to get admission there so I was able to get admission in Ramlal Anand College which is in South Delhi Anand Niketan. This is also affiliated to Delhi University so I opted for geology in this college geology was my choice because I love travelling, I love mountains. earlier I was going to choose the zoology or botany related subject but later I realise that geology has more scope both in private and public sectors, also I can continue with my research studies as well. geology offers some jobs in sectors like ONGC, GSI , Indian Meteorological department which are dream sectors for anyone who wants to work for a public sector enterprise. also there are courses available in ISRO as well if you complete your masters in Geology related subjects so if you want to research in ISRO or want to study in a ISRO geology is one way to do it. there is UGC NET exam which is conducted twice the year when you complete masters you are eligible for that so you can become a professor in the field of geology.

Faculty

Most of the faculty members were well-qualified and experienced in their respective fields therefore they helped in research projects. But only a few professors were good in their teaching methods and ability to simplify difficult topics. Faculty-to-student ratio was approximately 30:1 which meant that individual attention was possible. Smaller class sizes helped in better interaction. There were mentor groups which were created, so each teacher was given nearly 10-15 students to provide guidance or mentorship whenever needed. Most faculty members were approachable, willing to clarify doubts during or after classes. However, a few professors were either too busy or unavailable outside lecture hours, making them harder to approach. Open-door policies and regular office hours by certain professors made students feel supported. Typically there were 4-5 subjects per semester so in total they lead to 14-15 exams ( which includes internal assessments, practical exams, and final written tests.) Some courses also included project work or viva voce as part of the evaluation. Difficulty Level: Exams were moderately difficult, requiring consistent preparation. Some subjects focused on rote learning, while others focused on application-based questions like Mineralogy, Structural geology. Also during the first 2 years we have too choose a general elective subject ( the subject we want to study ,apart from our main course). This was totally our choice. Failure Rate: was quite low in my batch. The curriculum was partially similar to industry standards. While core topics were covered, certain topics or areas felt outdated. As I have mentioned earlier more of field work was required for more practical expertise. Internship opportunities were there for geology course especially in ONGC , GSI and Ministry of Environment, Petroleum industry, etc.

Night Life

the nightlife for in and around college campus is quite safe the Anand Niketan South Delhi area is very safe according to me as I have not faced any issues there. the area is also very clean and not very polluted or not very noisy. The Hangout spot for all the college students in that area is Satya Niketan as it offers a great vibe, there are libraries , cafes, restaurants, etc. the market area for all the college students is Satya Niketan as it offers cheap and affordable products. Near to the college there are many places to visit like Sarojini Nagar, Lodhi garden etc. hostels and PGs are available both in Satya Niketan and Anand Niketan and the Satya Niketan PGs are quite sheet as compared her to the PGs in Anand Niketan. but in terms of safety I give a 10/10 to Anand Niketan on the other hand Satya Niketan although it is a very busy place but it is not safe at night so I would give it 5 out of 10

Other Applied Colleges

Hansraj College - [HRC] | Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] {Hons.} (Zoology)

At last I decided that i should opt for geology as it had job in both private and public sectors. Also I like to travel and explore new places especially mountains which is quite beneficial for me as i love structural geology

Amity University | Bachelor of Science [B.Sc] {Hons.} (Agriculture)

At last I decided to opt for Geology in Delhi University since I was more interested in Geology, Also I like to travel a lot which becomes an important factor if you are opting for geology as you have to study structural geology which means you have to be
