- Few lectures can be boring and the faculties can seem strict.
- Strict attendance maintenance. A minimum of 80% attendance needed to maintained.
Course Curriculum Overview
Materials science and engineering is a relatively new field in engineering. We were the first B.Tech batch in Materials Science and Engineering in NITC. Its an innovative and cutting edge reseasrch field. The course work was developed based on the materials science courses at NTU Singapore, Rice University and Georgia Tech. The courses are planneed in such a way that they work to develop an aptitude for research in the students. The courses focus on Nanoscience, Material Characterization techniques, Semiconductors, among other things. You can choose to speciliaise in specific tracks such as photovoltaic systems, Nanomaterias, Metallurgy Biomedicals, etc, based on the electives you choose. You are exposed some top tier research works at the labs in the department and get hands on research experience during the course. 2 examinations are held in every semester. The exmas were comparetively easy if you pay attebtion in the lectures. The faculties in the department are great teachers.
Internships Opportunities
During the 2nd and 3rd year students are offered some internship opportunities. Compared to the placement drive, fewer companies participate in the internship drive. They are more competitive and harder to get into. Accenture, Goldman Sachs are just some of the companies that had come. You can always search for internship opportunities yourself. The faculties at Material Science are always there to help you in your search. They will point in the right directions to look for chances. They can also recommend you to other places for internships. If you are interrsted in research, this is always the better option. Look for the internship opportunities yourself.
Placement Experience
Students can sit for placements in the final year. The placement drive will begin at the start of the final year and is carried throughout the year. Google, Microsofot, Gameloft, Accenture, Micron are just some of the companies that have come to NITC. The average package at NITC is 10-12 lakh . However students have been offered packages as high as 75 lakhs in my year. NITC had a very high placement percetage of around 90 percentage in my final year. Most of the companies coming will be IT companies. Many core companies do come. For materials science, MRF, Micron, L&T were some of the core companies that had come. I have been in placed in Brillio.
Fees and Financial Aid
There are 3 categories for fees, based on your annual family income. For my batch, the fees was around 60000 per semesterfor students with an income more than 5 lakh, and 26000 for student with an income of 1-5 lakhs and no fees for students with income less than 1 lakh. However the fees have been steadily increasing every year. The tuition fee is justifiable by the quality of edution and th exposure you are getting at NITC> If you are living in hostel, the average hostel bill per month is around 6500 including mess bill. Various scholorship oppurtunities are available. Students have to look for the scholarships themselves and collect all the required documents. There are no employment oppurtunities within thecampus. You have to search for any such cases.
Campus Life
Tathva, south India's largest technical fest is held in the month of October in NITC. Ragam, the cultute fest is held in March. A newly constructed library is available with books ranging from engineering textbooks to philosophy books to fiction. Classrooms have projector to help enhance the lectures. Faculties often use portable mics for lectures to be audible. A computer center is available for all students to use in their free time for their needs. Study rooms are also present in the library for the students to make use of. NITC has sports teams of most of the sports and an athletics team. They do compete in inter college competitions. Music club, dance team, drama team, mime team, literature club, and many more cultural clubs and teams are there in NITC. Technical clubs such as IEEE, Unwired, Aerounwired, etc are there for students to expand their technical skills. The different club often conduct events and workshops throughout the calender year open to all the students.
Hostel Facilities
The hostel facilities in NITC are really good and affordable. A new hostel complex has been constructed to accomodate the students. After every year, students will have to shift to a different hostel. In the first year you will be sharing your room with 4 students. In the 2nd and 3rd year, its usually with 2-3 students. In the final year you either get a single room or a shared room. Hostels have a common bathing and toilet area, there's are no attached bathrooms. Cleaning staff clean the hostel facilities regularly. The quality of food in mess is overall decent. Some messes provide great food while other hostel messes could do better. From second year you can opt to join whichever hostel mess you prefer. Veg mess is aslo available in all hostels. You have to join the hostel at the time of admission. You can also opt not to. The rooms are allotted at random. At the start of every academic year, you ahve to register for hostel room allocation. Again the allotment process is random.
Admission
The admission to NITC is based on the JEE Mains exam score and ranking. The closing rank for Mateirals Science and engineering at NITC the year 2019 was around 30000 for genral category and for OBC rank it was 8400. I joined an entrance coaching institute after finishing 12th. I applied for the JEE exam through jeemain.nta.ac.in. Now you have 2 attempts at the exams, usually one in Jan-Feb and the next in April-May. They exam is very competitive and difficult. The entire 11 and 12 syllabus is covered in the exams and pattern of questions is different from the board exams. There are reservations for OBC, SC, ST, EWS, and other categories. They are helpful in getting admission if you belong to these categories. I had to submit caste certficate and NCL-OBC certificate to avail it. After the exam results are declared, I selected the colleges and the courses I wanted to be admitted in, in the JOSAA website. The allotment results were declared in 7 rounds.
