What Students Say
Likes
- Freeness, since there is no pressure of attendance and the exams being easy, it is good for students as they get enough time to prepare themselves for jobs/gate/upsc/cat etc.
Dislikes
- Irregularity of classes, very bad classrooms, lab computers not usable as they are backdated
- Faculties don't take responsibility of managing classes, everything is done by CRs ( class representatives) , so they keep on cancelling classes for no reason.
- Very bad hostels, the toilets are unclean ,mess food is very bad ( that s the reason why i left hostel after 1 year)
Course Curriculum Overview
I am fascinated by tech and the best option of tech related branches available for my rank was JGEC. So I chose it. There are 6 main faculties in the IT department. So the faculty : student ratio in the department is nearly 1:10. Talking about the qualification of faculties, they are highly qualified in their respective fields, but talking about the teaching method, I would rate it 4/10 since most of them are not regular, so they just run behind finishing the syllabus before exam. Exams are held timely and are very easy to pass because 90% of the questions are repeated from past papers.
Fees and Financial Aid
The academic fees of the IT degree is 1.1 lakh for 4 years. There are scholarships and financial assistance for students whose family income is less than 2.5 lakh per annum. (I can't avail any scholarship, so I can't provide any further details ).
Campus Life
Annual tech fest here is shristy (this year it was in November) and annual fest is jeclat ( march-april). The college library has all the required course books which can availed by any student during the library hours. Classrooms are old and need to be renovated. Sports and extra curricular facilities are good. There are many clubs ,groups etc in which any student can join at the start of the academic year ,attend seminars ,do projects, participate and win prizes. ( naming of all clubs is not possible, there are many).
Admission
Admission to Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College is done through Wbjee. For getting into IT department, the rank cutoff is about 2500 to 3000. Anyone with PCM in their class 12th can get into the course. The application form is available on the wbjee website and all other details regarding the form, exam, fees is there on the site. The admission process is very smooth here.
