Remarks

The college is really good with great students from all over India, the environment here in silchar is fantastic with absolutely no predictability. Coming to the Silchar town, it is having everything but the roads and transport is not that good. My overall experience has been really fantastic.

Entrance Preview

JEE (mains) is the Entrance Exam that has to be cleared to get into this prestigious institute. For my rank the best i could get was this particular institute, so i landed here. No, there wasn't any interview process involved. My interest towards Engineering and more precisely towards Electronics made me choose the Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering branch here in NIT Silchar.

Course Curriculum Overview

4

The course is really good and enjoyable with really young and talented teachers, teaching things in a practical manner. Practical Learning is encouraged with labs in every semester having overall grades also. I had upto three labs in some semesters. Research, projects and startups are frequently encouraged by the college, and it is also having research promotion cell, startup cell and Innovation labs, where students can take-up projects and work onto it. There are a various elective options available in final year with a compulsory final year project.

Internships Opportunities

Yes the training and placement cell tries to provide internship to each and every student of the batch, major companies being the PSU's. The experience will be really good with exposure to the industry environment, and learning the practical usage of the things taught in college. But very few students get paid internship, so not expecting a stipend is good.

Placement Experience

4.5

The placement scenario is quite good and it is getting better every year. Almost all the eligible students (GPA 6.0+ and no backlogs) gets placed in very reputed companies. Major recruiters that visited the college during my time are: Goldman Sachs, MuSigma, deloitte, Johnson Control, John Deere, Medlife, maruti suzuki, tata motors , Accenture, wipro, IBM, Infosys ,sify, mahindra and mahindra,l&t,wells Fargo, oracle, hsbc, ofss, cummins etc.

College Events

5

The student strength of this institute being 5000+, the fests are really big. In an Academic year the major fests are: a technical fest named Tecnoesis, a cultural fest named Incandescence, and a spring fest known as Posua. There are also several small events including freshers for each branch, independence day events and various other events. You can always expect a huge footfall in any event. The main organizing body here is the Student Union, with full co-operation from the college authorities.

Fee Structure And Facilities

At the time of my admission, the fee was quite high and many had to opt for loans to pay the full fee. .Academic fee (Tution fee + Facitity charges) is around Rs. 43000 per semester and an additional Rs. 13000 for mess advance, which is adjusted according to usage. Now it is 1.25 lakhs per year for general and obc and no fee for other categories.

Fees and Financial Aid

The College doesn't provide any scholarship, although syudents may avail from other sources in which student welfare department provide full support. Getting a loan is really easy here and the college authorities will also give full support. The is a SBI branch inside the college premises which makes the process of availing loan easier.

Campus Life

4.5

College provides a great environment of extracurricular activities with the existence of various clubs like dramatics, mountaineering, photography, quiz, adventure, sports, music, dance, literary etc conducting various events throughout the year. Apart from it, students get a chance to participate in various other national or international events organised by various institutes or organizations. Sports facilities are also really good here with separate cricket and football stadiums, basketball, tennis courts and various indoor game equipments and faciliites.

Hostel Facilities

3

Yes, hostels are provided for each and every student that takes admission into NIT Silchar. The 1st year B.Tech Male students get a entire hostel full of them only with no seniors (so no fear of ragging), the rooms are double sharing. For females its triple sharing rooms and thay will have to share the hostel with seniors also. In the second year, hostels are changes and everyone gets a triple sharing rooms, the students are distributed evenly among all the hostels. The third-year students may get single rooms according to merit. Every Fourth year student gets a single room. There is no PG. Food is average.

Alumni/Alumna

The college has a alumni cell named Rexian and it is having details of all the alumni's of the college. Every year a Alumni meet is organized, which allows the students of the college to interact with the alumni and clear their doubts and get a career counselling. The college has many alumni working at highest level in various organizations. The network is in expansion phase and thus there hasn't yet been major contribution by the alumni as of now.

Exam Structure

Basically there is a evaluation of 100 marks for each subject every semester. The distribution being 30 for mid-sem exams, 50 for end sem exams and the rest 20 as internals which entirely depends on the course co-ordinator how he wants to give, he may take tests assignments etc. For labs there is just a final end sem exam, but requires a regular maintainance of lab copies. But you get a lot of time to chill also.

Faculty

4

The standard of faculties is quite high in this institute, with most of them being Ph.D holders and a few with M.Tech as their qualification. Many of them are having experience of more than 10 years in the teaching field. The teachers are really interactive and friendly ones specially the younger ones although you can expect a few of them to be little less friendly. The Standard of teaching is really good.

Placement Experience:

Placements are not really good in our college, it is more of a research institute so it mainly focuses on PhD as PhD strength is good. Higher education is more prefered here but placement scenario is also good

Course Curriculum Overview:

The course curriculum is very relevant and is different for different branches according to their needs. I was interested in civil engineering and chose the course and find the curriculum intersting and relevant for me . The curriculum offers subject which are important for real world applications, like in civil engineering it's offers subjects like building construction, solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, material testing, serving, etc. The course curriculum is very good but the teaching methods needs improvement like more digitalization . The exams frequency and timings are neither too late nor too early, they are perfectly planned and executed.

Course Curriculum Overview:

There exists a good teaching staff that's why the course is very easy to understand also teachers give us good examples also do practicals so that's students understand the course easily . I see that there exist a low no of equipments in practical lab compare to it's students ratio so if they have a good no of equipments then all students get equipment to do experiment without any waste of time . Time is good as compare to marks and the first 30 marks are beginner level the other 40 marks are intermediate level and the remaining 30 Marks are advanced level questions in a question paper for the students they published.

Placement Experience:

The placement scenario is quite good, with several reputed companies like General Electric, Power Grid Corporation of India, Goldman Sachs, among others recruiting 94 percent of the students in the college. The placement takes place in three rounds, one testing one's aptitude, followed by an hour round, finally leading on to a technical round. Mock interview and job cracking sessions are organized regularly, both by the departments, and also the Training and Placement Cell, to prepare students for the interviews and examinations going forward. The Training and Placement Cell also provides internship opportunities at the end of third year for the students, based on their aptitude and abilities

I have mostly positive remarks about college except for the fact that the college is situated really far from mainstream north India. Train connectivity is not that strong to rest of country. But despite that the college is extremely good in the sense of learning, meeting new innovative minds, and of course placements and jobs.
