CSE @ IIT-ISM Dhanbad

IIT-ISM Dhanbad is one of the most popular technical institutions in the country. It was converted into an IIT not very long back, which has greatly improved its exposure and has been a shot in the arm for its brand value. The JEE is utilized for admission into the undergraduate engineering courses, including the one in Computer Science and Engineering.

The course is divided into eight semesters, with each one lasting roughly eighteen weeks. Core courses start in the second year, with a few electives down the line in the latter half of the course. The first year has the same preparatory subjects across departments. The low faculty-student ratio bodes in one's favor if one is intended to learn from experienced professors.Seminars, lectures, practical sessions and projects form the basic pedagogies for our learning experience. The exams were usually prepared for slightly before the D-Day, since a lot of us were quite invested in extracurricular activities.

Internships are quite desirable since they equip us with invaluable industry experience despite being a student. Notable companies like Sprinklr, Amazon, and the ones that are stated in the placements section, along with startups play the role of introducing us to our future careers. Almost all of us got internship opportunities at one point or the other, with concentration being in the break after the even semester in the second and third years. Quite a few of us got PPOs too.

The average placement package for our department was Rs 15 LPA, with the highest remuneration being Rs 43 LPA. The lowest package was pegged at 9 LPA, which demonstrates the skew being predominantly positive. Key companies included tech giants like Microsoft, Google, Facebook, Goldman Sachs, Salesforce etc. Some of the students opted for non-tech roles as well. I got placed into an MNC, which has put my career into a trajectory I desired.

The total fee of the course is about 9.2 lakhs, when all the semesters' expenses are added up. This does not include the mess fee but considers the accommodation costs. The fee is considerably lowered for SC/ST/OBCs, in order to further the cause of education and diversity at the institute. Scholarships can be availed on the basis of merit and need, based on the annual family income. Central governmental schemes can be availed from the respective portals.

"Srijan" is the annual socio-cultural fest of IIT-ISM Dhanbad, while "Concetto" is the annual technical fest. These are quite popular and see an enthralling footfall of students from throughout the country, especially from the Eastern and central India. The campus is quite large, which also facilitates the celebration of various festivals and the provides scope for playing outdoor sports of one's choice.The student-run clubs and organizations play a crucial part in shaping students' soft skills and overall roundedness of personality. The libraries equip us with the books for our courses; it's quite common to see students flock at the library the day before the exams.

The hostel fee is quite low, whilst the mess fee forms about three-fourths of the above amount. Water, electricity, internet, boarding etc.is all considered in the 1.2 lakhs (approx.) semester fee figure, with mess requiring separate settlement. We stayed in group accommodation, with bed, mattress, almirah, wardrobe, study table and chair provided to all boarders. Common facilities included washrooms and mess, which were quite satisfactory. The camaraderie that we developed in there shall stay with us for the rest of our lives.

JEE Mains and Advanced form the shortlisting criteria for admission. The former serves as the qualifying exam, while the latter provides the AIR for admission into the IITs. Getting a rank below 3,000 guarantees one's admission into the CSE course at IIT ISM Dhanbad. This is followed by appearing for document verification by JoSAA.
