Remarks
IIM Jammu is the newest IIM but it is performing better than some of the other new and baby IIMs academic wise and placement wise as well. I chose IIM Jammu as it was the only IIM that I was getting and you get the IIM tag which is the biggest merit. If we see the fees, it is less than many other B- schools that do not provide promising placements and is reasonable enough considering the fact that you are getting an IIM tag along with the experience of getting taught by the experienced professors of other IIMs. Soon IIM Jammu is going to start its new campus which will be huge so infrastructure wise too it will be a very good option. It has also recently launched its integrated program in management (IPM) so those who want to get an early exposure to an IIM can also apply. Along with that, it also provides an opportunity of International Exchange Program (IEP) which provides global exposure to students to study in the international partner institutions.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course curriculum is a bit rigorous like the other IIMs but it is doable. The academics are covered in a span of 2 years which will be divided into 6 trimesters. The first year includes a mix of management subjects from all domains including a few important finances, marketing, HR, Strategy, Analytics subjects which is common for all the students. The students will get a chance to choose their majors and minors in the second year, Depending on their area of interests they can choose 1,2 and a maximum of 3 majors and a mix of majors and minors as well. From the exam point of view, a student needs to go an extra mile in case you target 8+ CGPA. 6 is the aggregate CGPA that is required to pass and move to the next trimester. All the faculties have completed their PhDs in premier institutes and most of the faculties have experience of teaching in other IIMs so the quality of teaching is good. The teaching method includes case studies which are published by Harvard Business School.
Internships Opportunities
The institute provides summer internship to all the students along with the opportunity to work on various live projects, The live project opportunity is provided throughout the year and various opportunities are provided for the same. Various companies that provide summer internship in IIM Jammu include ICICI, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Amul, Bosch, Parle, V Guard, SIDBI, etc. So a lot of big brands comes for the internship. Stipend ranges from 0 to 2 lakhs and depends on the role and the company. Live projects are floated regularly and you can select the live project depending upon your area of interest. Various roles offered for internship includes risk management, marketing research, operations management, brand management, business development executive, etc.
Placement Experience
The institute provides 100% placements both in finals and in summers. The average package for final placement is 10 LPA and the highest package is 24.5 lakhs. The highest package also depends on the domain. Some very good brands such as Deloitte, Vedanta, Wipro, Citi Group, Tata Power etc visit the campus for final placements. For finals, roles such as general finance, risk management, equity management, Sales manager, etc are offered. Summer placements are decent enough. You get a chance to do your internship in different domains. Companies such as ICICI, Kotak Mahindra, Amul, Parle, etc come for summer placements. For summers, roles such as risk analysis, market research, investment banking, equity research etc are offered.
Fees and Financial Aid
IIMs have fees according to their position in the list of IIMs and so IIM Jammu is fees is less than the other IIMs. The total fees are around 14 lakhs which is reasonable enough considering the course structure, quality of teaching, infrastructure and placements. The plus point is that you get a chance to be a part of the IIM community which will be beneficial in the long run. You can very easily get a loan from banks to sponsor the fees. Along with that various scholarships are available including Need Cum Scholarship, SC/ST scholarship and Minority Scholarship as well. These scholarships have certain criteria as well such as securing a minimum grade and certain other criteria as well. Campus placements are provided to all the students and some of the big brands come for recruitment both in summers placement as well as final placement
Campus Life
Life at the campus is good like any other B schools. Students get a chance to be a part of various clubs and committees. Various committees such as the placement committee, Disha Committee etc are there along with various clubs. Clubs are mostly for different domains such as finance club (ViTT), marketing club (Vipran) and some other clubs for extracurricular activities such as music club and dance club (Groove). You can be a part of both committee and club at the same time. A lot of good books and journals are available in the library. The institute also provides remote access to the library so you can access the library anywhere using your email id. The material includes a lot of journals, all magazines, ebooks, etc. Along with that, you get a subscription to Statista, ET Prime and Bloomberg through your institute email id. Clubs organize various activities from time to time which will help you to break the monotony of the academic curriculum. Various fests are also organized such as Empyrean.
Hostel Facilities
The infrastructure is decent, The rooms are either 2 seaters or 3 seaters for boys and 2 seaters for girls. The institute has a good mess and meals are provided 4 times which includes breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner. Like other b schools, mess timings are there and the mess menu gets revised after a few days. The quality of food is good. Washrooms are available on all floors along with other amenities such as WiFi, washing machines, etc. The quality of the room is decent enough, Gym is also there on the campus and the location of the campus is very safe. Hostel rooms are clean and hygenic.
Interview Experience
The admission process includes a written test round and a personal interview round. The students who get a certain percentile get the call letter after which the process starts. IIM Jammu process is either conducted along with IIM Bodhgaya which is the SAP process or with a few new IIMs which is the CAP process. I got it through its SAP process. the written test topic was on the lines of - is it justified that more BTech students get admitted to bigger IIMs as compared to commerce students. The written test round will be followed by the personal interview round. Mostly there will be two panellists taking the interview. My interview included a basic introduction and a mix of HR and Technical questions. They might ask you to justify what you must have written in your written test round and there will be a few current affairs questions as well including some budget highlights since the interview takes place when the budget is announced. The interview will nearly be of 20 minutes
