Remarks
IEM college can be termed as a high school college. While sufficient weightage was given to the course and attendance the college lacked infrastructure for proper labs and extra curricular activities. It was the students who had to organize and bring money for any event being held in the college. One thing college did best was to ensure that everyone of the students in placed in a reputed IT company.
Entrance Preview
IEM (Institute of Engineering and Management) took students who score good rank in WBJEE (West Bengal Joint Entrance Exam). In 2004 5% of the seats were reserved for AIEEE rank holders as well. I got a rank of 704 in WBJEE and opted for this college as it had a good placement record and I was getting ECE (stream which I wanted to pursue).
Course Curriculum Overview
IEM college came under WBUT (West Bengal university of Technology) when I was a student and the course curriculum was same as that of any other engineering college in West Bengal coming under WBUT. First year had common subjects for all the streams like mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, maths, chemistry, environmental sciences, workshop,C language etc. From the 2nd year we had ECE subjects like MATLAB,control logic & Network, digital electronics,microprocessor,audio-video,Antenna & communication, optical fibre communication,Wireless communication, optoelectronics devices & circuits etc.
Internships Opportunities
College did not offer any internship on its own. However interested students could approach the placement cell and some senior professor who helped students get internship in TCS. However internship were mostly offered to IT students and only a handful around 10 got them every year.
Placement Experience
IEM college is famous for its placement opportunities with some students even getting 4 offers I got 3 - TCS, Infosys & IBM. TCS was the first company being called and it picked around 160 students (of the total 240). The package offered by the companies was around 2.5 Lacs to 3.2 Lacs.Other companies coming to college were CTS,Tech Mahindra, NIIT,Sasken,Wipro etc.
College Events
College did not organize fest every year. During my 4 years as a student of the college only 1 fest was organized during my 3rd year. In this fest students from different colleges from all over the country were invited including - IIT kharagpur and it was a successful event. Rock college band Elixir and singer Palash Sen were the main crowd pullers. College also organized a Tech Fest where projects made by the college students were shown in an exhibition.
Fee Structure And Facilities
Fee structure of the college was in line with all the other private colleges of West Bengal. During the period 2004-2008 the per semester charges were Rs 15600. But it increased to 21900 semester by the time we left the college. Apart from this there were examination charges Rs 200 for every semester.
Fees and Financial Aid
I did not take any loan but we had banks offering loans to the needy students when required the bank representatives were present during the counselling period.
Campus Life
Extracullicular activities were negligible in the college. Sport competition was organized by the interested students like us and we organized cricket and football competitions. College organized Badminton and carom competition. There were no other competition organized by the college. Male:Female ratio was around 4:1 in each class. Students in the college were either from the middle class or upper class. Lower class students preferred government colleges which had lower fee structure.
Hostel Facilities
The college did not have a proper hostel. Outstation students were provided flats near college which served as a hostel for the college. The college canteen had limited options Rice, chow Mein, Omelette, etc each flat had a room which was shared by 2 students. There were sufficient flats for all the outstation students.
Alumni/Alumna
There is no alumni network of the college. However some senior students work nearby as the college is situated at the heart of the IT area. They often used to come to meet college professors and shared interesting stories about their college days.
Exam Structure
Exam structure is similar to the structure of all other colleges under WBUT. In 4 years we had 8 semesters (2 per semester) and we received credit points based on the importance of the subject and our performance in that subject per subject. We had labs every day and had to prepare files for all the labs. But it was not very hectic we had sufficient time to complete everything in college hours and a couple of days study before the exam was sufficient to get a good score in college.
