Remarks
J.D Birla Institute (JDBI) Kolkata is a private unaided college affiliated to Jadavpur University, Kolkata. The late Sushila Devi Birla, wife of eminent industrialist late L. N. Birla established a college for girls in her mother-in-law's name in June 1962. The college was named Smt. Jawahari Devi Birla Institute of Home Science and it filled a much-felt gap in the scientific education of young women from Kolkata's conservative families. Over five decades, the Institute has grown with the needs and demands of the changing times. A Department of Commerce was added in 1997 and in tune with the shifting zeitgeist; another campus was started in 2002 to house the co-educational Department of Management. At this time, the name of the institution was simplified to J. D. Birla Institute. In the year 2009, four new professionally-oriented under-graduate B.Sc courses (Food Science & Nutrition Management; Textile Science, Clothing & Fashion Studies; Interior Designing and Human Development) were introduced apart from two new post-graduate M.Sc courses (Food & Nutrition and Textiles & Clothing) in 2009. M.Com was introduced and the Home Science Programme discontinued in 2013.
Course Curriculum Overview
The course is the same usual one as all the colleges in Kolkata have. But I feel the faculty can be improved regarding financial accounts and environmental studies. Now during the pandemic they should have removed EVS or found a better way of teaching it as it is becoming boring and students aren't interested in studying. Rest their timing is very good for students who want to do CA or anything this is a college they should definitely checkout.
Placement Experience
I cannot give my reviews on this topic but I have seen and heard about good companies which come for recruitment in jd Birla institute. Students have the option of getting part time jobs and internships also as they have a different faculty for it.
College Events
I cannot say about campus life as I joined in this pandemic situation but I am expecting it to be good as jdbi has a lot of activities going on throughout the year. There are separate activities for different courses. As of the online classes also they are trying their level best to arrange activities. We have different activities lined up for every Saturday the last was story telling in which I participated. I found it very new as it was conducted in a new manner.
Campus Life
Infrastructure is good except for sports facilities. There are computer labs which contain computers for every student individually. There is a stationary shop inside the campus which is something important according to me. The class rooms are air conditioned and the campus has WiFi as well.
