This college is one of the oldest Marine College in India ( set up in 1949 ). It is a central government college so the cumulative fees is comparatively lesser than other private colleges. The alumni network is quite strong because its the first ever marine college in INDIA. It has one of the biggest workshop in Asia. It has simulator Laboratories, Library, 5 mechanical and electrical labs It has four different Hostels for different batches of the college. A full wifi - Campus, a dispensary, Computer labs, an auditorium. Moreover, the campus is very close to urban area which in turn can help the cadets get what they want without wandering unnecessarily. Also, College promotes co - curricular activities and hosts fests each year namely : Tempest and Lit - o - sphere. The college has got very good figures in term of placement records. Almost 50 - 60 % cadets are more or less placed at the end of 7th semester.

As per the curriculum it is constantly updated by the Indian Maritime University Chennai headquarters as per the directions given by DG shipping INDIA. Because it is a Central Government College, it is one of the first college to experience all the changes that are done in the curriculum. As far as academic is concerned Marine Engineering is a four year residential course it teaches us both mechanical and electrical aspect of ship. We learn about INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINES, diesel engines, Compressors, boliers, lathe machines and other mechanical and electrical equipments. We also learn Thermodynamics, Seamanship and several other subjects. The college features one of the best Marine faculty in India. most of the teachers teaching here are highly qualified or have achieved highly in their fields having proper knowledge about what and how to teach the new brain with years of experience. Most of the professor teaching here are passouts of this college and heve held high ranked positions like chief Engineers, surveyors, office of Registrar of shipping INDIA etc. Since,they passed from this college itself, they understand the cadets of the UNIVERSITY more.

Indian Maritime university Kolkata campus is one of the oldest Marine College in India and has one of the finest placement records, Every year almost 60 % cadets are placed at the end of 7th semester. several reputed shipping companies like NYK, Mediterranean Shipping Corporation, CHEVRON, DOCKENDALE, THOME, Fleet management, Anglo - Eastern, Thome comes to recruit in the college every year. As far as alumni networking is concerned since it is one of the oldest college in India the alumni network is very strong and most of the placement happening in college is because of the Alumni of the college due to their job referrals. It is because of the Alumni network that placement percentage of IMU - KC is better than several other Marine colleges. Few notable alumni of college includes SK Sinha ( Indian registrar of shipping ), Yatin gangla ( CEO, thome group ), Ranjit singh ( CEO, ESSAR SHIPPING ), AK Gupta ( chairman managing director, shipping corporation of India )

The college hosts one of the biggest marine fest in the country know as TEMPEST with a foot count of almost 20000. It also hosts a cultural and poetic evening known as LIT -O - SPHERE. Tempest is an overall dose of everything. It includes Technical competition, Cultural competition, Sports, fashion, Quizzes, Model United Nations, Campus pricess, kolkata 's Got Talent. Almost 30 colleges joined in for the fest. The technical events includes Paper presentation, Model making (ships ), Robo wars, Cissset Ignis, IC engine, Research paper, The cultural events include singing, dancing, rap, beatboxing, group singing, bands etc Kolkata' s got talent is for showcasing any talent that the individual possess. Campus princess held at IMU KC is a competition backed by femina India and this is specifically for girls for want to pursue a career in Modelling. In the sports section : there is a cricket cup, a football cup, a hockey cup, a kabaddi championship, a volleyball championship, a basketball championship, a badminton champ cup, a table tennis championship. In spite of all these competition, There is one more competition specifically for cadets of IMUKC, the winner is crowed as MR Mariner.

The college has scholarships for the meritorious students the topper of the batch is awarded with INR 100000 while the next 30 cadets are awarded with rupees 75000 and the next 30 cadets are rewarded with INR 50000.

Our college consists of two academic buildings, A Residential area for the officers and teachers of the college, It has a dispensary. A workshop with lathe machines, boiler room, Engine room, Main diesel engine room, 3 mechanical labs, A seamanship Lab, An electrical lab with generator and transformers and several other equipments. 3 simulation Labs for ships navigation, a playground, a parade ground, an assembly hall, a conference hall, an auditorium, 4 different hostels for 4 different batches, a library with 30000 books, a fire safety lab,a badminton court, a basketball court, a volleyball court, an olympic size swimming pool, a full wifi campus.

As far as hostels are concerned the hostels are divided into 10 Wings, there are four different hostels for different batches, each wing consists of almost 15 to 20 cadets which includes KIT room and upper rack, a quadrangle, a lower rack, a visitor room, wardens office, a TV room, a study room, a large 240 seater MESS. Each room consists of 6 cadets living together with 6 cupboards,one for each one of them. Each room consists of 4 Windows, 4 fans and 4 fluorescent tubes, 4 sockets for electrical appliances, 2 study tables and large common washroom for 15 cadets.
