Is it worth doing a B.Des from DTU or not? What are its placement records and whats your experience with this college so far?

I’m currently in my first year of B.Des at DTU, and it’s been quite a ride. The campus life is vibrant with tons of cultural fests and clubs to join, which makes it fun. The faculty is mostly supportive, although some can be strict. The course has been updated recently, but I feel like it could use more practical learning opportunities.

Placement-wise, I’ve heard good things; many students land jobs in top companies like Microsoft and Google. The fee is around 2.5 lakhs per year, which totals to about 15-16 lakhs for four years, and there are scholarships available too. Overall, it seems like a good investment if you really want to dive into the design field.

Honestly, pursuing a B.Des from DTU has been a pretty good experience so far. The curriculum is solid and mostly relevant to what companies are looking for. The first year is all about building a foundation, which I think is really important. I’ve heard that placements are decent too, especially for interaction design students. The highest package was around 1.8 crores, but I guess the average is more like 10-12 lakhs, which isn't bad at all! Plus, you get internship opportunities in the third year, which is something I’m looking forward to. Overall, if you're passionate about design and willing to work hard, DTU could be worth it.

So, I’m in my second year of B.Des at DTU, and I’d say it’s worth it if you’re serious about design. The internship options are great, and I’ve seen my seniors get good placements with solid packages. The college has a startup incubation program too, so you can get paid internships right on campus. The fees are a bit high, around 10 lakhs for the entire course, but there are scholarships if you qualify. Campus life is amazing with events like Engifest, and the student community is really active. If you can rank under 200 in UCEED, I’d say go for it!

This paragraph was written on 18–12-2020. I am from the second batch of this course. DTU, formerly known as Delhi College of Engineering, has started offering B.Des. Many people here are saying not to join because it's new. But remember, everything was new at some point! In today's world, nothing stays new for long. The reality is, India has a shortage of design colleges. Students are struggling for 2 to 3 years to get into design colleges, and even then, many don’t succeed. Most students think there are only NID and IIT. The competition is huge, making it nearly impossible for colleges to judge accurately. For example, if you’re asked to draw the same thing twice, you’ll get different results. So, can you really judge yourself so minutely on parameters like light, shading, shapes, etc.? It’s about design, not fine arts.

What you want from a design college:

• FACULTIES: You’ll be learning from IITians, NIDians, and professors from architecture and world-class institutions like the Royal College of Art, UK. (Check the brochure!) They are truly exceptional. You can find your mentors here.
• VALUE: You will be getting a degree from a reputable institution.

In conclusion, don’t let the “newness” deter you. The opportunities and quality of education at DTU’s B.Des program are worth considering!

Short Answer - Nope. Not yet. Not for the next 5 years at least.

Long answer - There are many, MANY reasons why DTU isn’t a good option for B.Des.

• It’s the first course being offered by the entire Department of Design at DTU. Just because a college excels in engineering doesn’t mean it will be great for other courses.
• DTU is still in the process of hiring professors and assistant professors. The selection was scheduled for July 4, 2018. How effective do you think the faculty and their coordination will be if they’re being hired just a month before the program starts?
• The dean comes from a reputed arts college. However, design today is not just about art. A technical background is essential.
• IIT Bombay decided not to conduct placements for their first graduating B.Des batch because they want to encourage self-sufficiency and creative thinking among students. IITB can afford this, as IDC, Powai is one of Asia’s top design colleges. Other institutions like Srishti follow similar practices, and DTU could choose to do so whenever they want. The key point is that IDC and Srishti are well-established in this field.
