What is the reputation of DTU in New Delhi for studying B.Des??

B.Des at DTU is still in its foundational years, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad choice. It’s actually a solid option! The key in design is that you can’t just memorize and regurgitate answers like in other fields. You need to put in real effort. Most students in the B.Des program at DTU are dedicated to making a difference, which will help change perceptions. The journey may be tough and challenging, but it helps you stand out from the crowd. Design offers you that chance, and DTU provides the additional opportunity to forge your own path rather than just following others.

When it comes to placements, remember that your portfolio and soft skills will speak volumes—often more than the institution's brand name. Think about it!

This paragraph was written on 18–12-2020. DTU, formally known as Delhi College of Engineering, has started offering a B.Des program. Many people here are saying it's new, so don’t join. But remember, everything was new at some point! In today's world, trends change quickly. India has a shortage of design colleges. Students are struggling for 2 to 3 years to get into design colleges, and even then, they often don’t succeed. Many believe that only NID and IIT matter. The competition is fierce, making it nearly impossible for colleges to assess applicants accurately. For example, if you were asked to draw the same thing twice, you'd likely produce different results. So, can you really judge yourself so minutely based on parameters like light, shading, shapes, etc.? Design is not the same as fine arts.

What you want from a design college:

• FACULTIES: You’ll be learning from IITians, NIDians, and professors from prestigious institutions like the Royal College of Art, UK. (Check out the brochure!) They are truly exceptional. You can find your mentors here.
• VALUE: You will be getting a degree from a recognized institution.

DTU is a great choice for B.Des, especially if you're looking for a solid curriculum. The first year is all about building a strong foundation, covering everything from product to industrial design. I’m currently in my first year, so I can’t comment on internships yet, but I’ve heard that in the 3rd year, we get good opportunities based on our skills and performance. The placement scene is decent too; interaction design students seem to get the best offers, with the highest package reaching 1.8 crores! Most of us can expect around 10-12 lakhs though. Overall, the college life is vibrant, and there are tons of clubs and fests to join!

Short Answer - Nope. Not just yet. Not for the next 5 years at least.

Long answer - There are many, MANY reasons why DTU isn’t a great option for B.Des.

• This is the first course being offered by the entire Department of Design at DTU. A college may excel in engineering, but that doesn’t guarantee quality in other disciplines.
• DTU is still in the process of hiring professors and assistant professors. The selection was scheduled for July 4, 2018. How effective do you think the faculty will be if they’re brought on board just a month before the program starts?
• The dean comes from a reputed arts college. However, the days when design was solely about art are long gone. A technical background is essential.
• IIT Bombay decided not to conduct placements for their first graduating batch of the B.Des course because they want to encourage self-sufficiency and creative thinking among students. IITB can afford this approach, as IDC, Powai is one of Asia’s top design colleges. Other institutions like Srishti have similar policies, and DTU can adopt this whenever they choose.

The key takeaway is that IDC and Srishti are well-established in the design field, while DTU is still finding its footing.

Studying B.Des at DTU has its perks! The campus life is one of the best parts, with amazing cultural fests like Engifest that bring everyone together. The faculty is mostly supportive, though a few can be strict. I think that helps us push our limits. The placement stats are decent, with some students getting really high packages. It’s worth noting that to get into this program, you need to clear the UCEED exam and rank under 200 in the general category if you're aiming for a seat. So, if you're passionate about design, DTU can be a great fit for you!
