KCET 2026 Exam Pattern

The KCET 2026 exam pattern is straightforward. The exam is conducted offline in OMR-based MCQ format across two days. Each subject paper carries equal marks, and there is no negative marking — a feature that makes KCET student-friendly compared to national exams like JEE.

Subject Day Questions Marks Duration
Physics Day 1 (April 23, 2026) 60 60 80 minutes
Mathematics Day 1 (April 23, 2026) 60 60 80 minutes
Chemistry Day 2 (April 24, 2026) 60 60 80 minutes
Biology Day 2 (April 24, 2026) 60 60 80 minutes
Total (Engineering: PCM) 180 180 3 papers × 80 min
Total (Medical/Pharmacy: PCB) 180 180 3 papers × 80 min

Key Features of KCET 2026 Exam Pattern

  • Mode: Offline — pen and paper (OMR sheet)
  • Question Type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) with 4 options each
  • Marking Scheme: +1 for every correct answer
  • Negative Marking: None — unanswered questions carry no penalty
  • Language: English and Kannada (bilingual question papers)
  • Stream Selection: Engineering aspirants take Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM). Medical/Pharmacy/Nursing aspirants take Physics, Chemistry, Biology (PCB). Some courses require both Mathematics and Biology (PCMB).
  • Kannada Language Test: An additional 50-mark qualifying test only for Horanadu/Gadinadu Kannadiga candidates on April 22, 2026 — this marks are not counted in KCET merit but must be cleared (minimum 12 marks) to claim eligibility.

KCET Rank Calculation Formula

KCET rank is not based on raw exam marks alone. The final merit rank uses a formula combining your KCET score and 2nd PUC board marks with equal weightage:

Merit Score = (KCET Exam PCM % + Board PCM Marks %) ÷ 2

For example, if you score 131/180 in KCET (72.78%) and 285/300 in board PCM (95%), your combined merit score = (72.78 + 95) ÷ 2 = 83.89%. This means a strong board performance can significantly improve your final rank, even if your KCET exam score is average.

KCET 2026 Syllabus

The KCET 2026 syllabus is based entirely on the 1st and 2nd PUC curriculum set by the Department of Pre-University Education, Karnataka. You do not need any additional coaching material beyond your state board textbooks. Around 60–70% of questions come from 2nd PUC, and 30–40% come from 1st PUC.

Physics Syllabus (Key Topics)

  • Mechanics (1st PUC): Laws of Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Rotational Motion, Gravitation — contributes about 32% of questions

KCET 2026 Marks vs Rank Analysis

The KCET rank is not derived from your raw exam score alone. It combines your KCET exam marks (50% weightage) and your 2nd PUC board PCM marks (50% weightage). This means your board performance has an equal say in your final rank. Candidates with very similar KCET scores can have very different final ranks based on their board marks.

KCET 2025 Marks vs Rank (Based on Final Results)

KCET Marks (out of 180) Expected Rank Range (2025)
175–180 1–10
170–174 11–50
160–169 51–200
150–159 201–500
140–149 501–1,000
130–139 1,001–2,000
120–129 2,001–3,500
110–119 3,501–5,000
100–109 5,001–8,000
Below 50 60,000+

These rank ranges are based on 2025 trends for candidates with board PCM percentage between 88–92%. Candidates with higher board marks will rank better for the same KCET score.

KCET 2024 Marks vs Rank (Reference)

Rank Marks (out of 180) — 2024
Rank 1 175+
Rank 10–20 166–168
Rank 41–50 158–161
Rank 91–100 148–152
Rank 171–180 138–142

The 2024 paper was slightly easier than 2025, leading to higher marks for the same rank bracket. In 2026, Chemistry was reported to be harder, which may shift the required marks downward.

How to Use This Data

The marks vs rank table gives you an estimate — it is not a guarantee. Your final rank depends on your board PCM percentage, the difficulty of the paper in that year, and the number of candidates who appeared. You should use this analysis alongside the official KCET rank card for counselling decisions.

KCET 2026 Preparation Tips

With KCET 2026 already over, these tips are for students preparing for KCET 2027 — or for anyone looking to understand what it takes to crack this exam with a top rank.

  • Focus on Karnataka PUC textbooks: The KCET syllabus is entirely from 1st and 2nd PUC Karnataka state board books. NCERTs are well-aligned and helpful for concepts, but your state board textbook is the primary reference.
  • Prioritise Calculus in Mathematics: Calculus accounts for 25–30% of the Mathematics paper. Continuity, Differentiability, Integration, and Application of Integrals are the most important chapters.
  • Organic Chemistry is key: Organic chemistry contributes 30–35% of the Chemistry paper. Focus on reaction mechanisms, named reactions, and functional group conversions.
  • Current Electricity and Mechanics in Physics: These two units together contribute nearly 60% of Physics questions. Do not skip any numericals from Current Electricity.
  • Solve 10 years of KCET previous papers: Previous year papers are the single best resource. KCET frequently repeats questions and question types. Aim to solve at least one full paper per day in the last two months.
  • Board marks matter as much as KCET marks: Since 50% weightage goes to 2nd PUC board marks, scoring above 90% in board PCM/PCB is as important as scoring high in KCET. Do not ignore your board exams.
  • Attempt all questions: There is no negative marking in KCET. Always attempt all 60 questions in each paper. Never leave a question blank.
  • Manage 80 minutes carefully: Each paper has 60 questions in 80 minutes — that is 80 seconds per question. Practice timed mock tests regularly to develop the right speed.
  • Do not skip 1st PUC chapters: About 30–40% of questions come from 1st PUC topics. Common mistakes include ignoring chapters like Kinematics, Laws of Motion (Physics) or Sets, Trigonometry, and Statistics (Mathematics).
