CUET PG English Question Paper Analysis (2024-2023)

The CUET PG 2023 question paper focused more on general knowledge, vocabulary, and reasoning-based questions, while the CUET PG 2024 paper focused more on literature, culture, and theory. As the exam changed each year, students needed to prepare for both literary topics and interdisciplinary subjects, as the test covered a wider range of skills.

CUET PG 2023 and CUET PG 2024 English Topics Comparison

The CUET PG 2024 English question paper covered many topics related to literature, language, and critical theory. It tested students on literary history, genre classification, linguistics, and modern literature. It also checked their understanding of classic and modern texts, rhetorical devices, and literary movements. In addition, it included questions on translation studies, cultural criticism, and Indian literature, making the exam more diverse than in previous years.

One important part of the CUET PG 2024 paper was genre classification, where students had to match literary works with their genres (e.g., Paradise Lost as an Epic, The Dunciad as a Satire). They also had to put Shakespeare's plays and literary movements into chronological order and identify significant concepts of philosophers such as Kant, Descartes, and Adorno. The examination also had world literature questions from authors of the Harlem Renaissance, African literature, and Indian English literature. Another key addition was linguistics and translation studies, which required students to understand idiolects, transliteration, and linguistic differences.

In contrast, the CUET PG 2023 question paper was slightly different. While it included literary and theoretical questions, it also tested vocabulary skills (e.g., synonyms and spelling errors) and logical reasoning (e.g., number series and direction-based problems). This showed that the 2023 exam had a broader focus, testing verbal skills and reasoning as well as literature. As a result, CUET PG 2023 focused more on language skills and analytical thinking, while CUET PG 2024 returned to a literature-heavy format.

The most significant change in CUET PG 2024 was that it placed more focus on modern and cultural studies, the question paper featured recent writers like Octavia Butler and Kazuo Ishiguro, as well as questions from cognitive science like how the brain works with stereotypes. This indicated a move towards integrating literature with cultural and scientific studies. Meanwhile, CUET PG 2023 emphasized basic vocabulary and language skills over and above the subject. Hence, it was more applied and language-intensive than theoretical.

The other major difference was the heavier focus on Indian literature in CUET PG 2024. Although CUET PG 2023 did feature some Indian literary personalities, 2024 paper took it a step ahead and included more Indian authors, local literature, and gender issues in drama. This meant that the students were being examined on Western as well as Indian literature, hence the test being more thorough.
