BA (Hons) Sanskrit: What is it about?

The 3-year graduation program in Sanskrit focuses on providing an overall understanding of this ancient language to the students through the vast coverage of its syllabus. The study of Sanskrit is divided into following parts

  • Poetry: This involves the study of Sanskrit shlokas and couplets as penned by the famous ancient poets and scholars. Sanskrit being a lingua franca in the ancient times has been used extensively in writing various Hindu epics and Puranas. Students are taught about the various shlokas and couplets from these epics and mythological writings by the ancient saint like Ramcharitramanas, Bhagavad Geeta etc.
  • Literature: It is analogous to the fiction or literature part in English (or any other language). It involves the study of stories, novels, and fiction written by famous authors in the given language. It focuses on the literary aspect of the Sanskrit language.
  • Grammar: Grammar as in any other language plays a role of enhancing or enriching the experience of learning the language. It focuses on making the students understand basic rules and aspects that one should follow while speaking or writing the language. It involves the study of Tenses, Punctuation, Noun, and Pronouns etc. as used in the Sanskrit language.
  • History: This area of study involves the knowledge and information in regards to the origin and development of the Sanskrit language. Students would be taught about the ancient Sanskrit text and literature like the Vedic and Post-Vedic writings to get a better understanding of the origin of the language. This helps them in developing a better understanding of the modern face of the language and its usage in the contemporary times.

The syllabus of the course is divided in such a manner that a student pursuing the course learns these various parts of the language in a sequential manner under the semester-wise division of the course curriculum.

BA (Hons) Sanskrit: Who Should Opt for?

  • Students who have interest in learning Indian languages can opt for this course.
  • Those who have a teaching career in mind can also try their hands at this course as there is a demand for Sanskrit teachers at Upper Primary, Higher Secondary and college level.
  • Those who are looking for a career in the field of Sanskrit communication and journalism can also opt for the course.
  • Those aiming at government jobs after graduation can also opt for the course.

BA (Hons) Sanskrit: Admission Process

The admission process for BA (Hons) Sanskrit course involves a merit-based selection procedure rather than a common entrance test based admission process (as seen across various Universities and colleges in the country). For more clarification and ease of understanding, we have dealt with the process of admission for this course in a more detailed manner under the below-mentioned points.

  • Some Universities/Colleges conduct a common entrance test for admission into BA (Hons.) courses hence students would have to make an application for such exams.
  • Students have to qualify these exams (for which they should be eligible to appear) in order to get admission in the course.
  • After the conduct of the test, a merit list of finally qualified candidates is prepared and candidates are invited for counselling cum admission process by the respective university or college.
  • After admission process, final allotment of seats to the candidate takes place and the candidate is asked to deposit the fee for the course and register for the respective academic year.

However, in most of the colleges, the admission process would be a straight forward task which would involve college displaying cut-off for the course two to three times (or more till the seats are filled) and candidates satisfying the cut-off percentage visiting the college and getting admissions.

BA (Hons) Sanskrit: Eligibility

Candidate must have passed the 10+2 or equivalent examination from a recognized state board or central board with at least 55% (45% to 50% for reserved category candidates) marks.

  • He/She shall not be having any backlog or compartment in any of the subject/Subjects at plus to or equivalent level that is yet to be cleared at the time of taking admissions.
  • Apart from the above mentioned eligibility criteria’s various colleges and institutes may have their own additional criteria’s which the students would have to satisfy in order to take admission.
  • In case of reserved category students, they would have to present their reservation certificates issued by the competent authorities in order to avail the benefits applicable for them.

The eligibility criteria’s mentioned above are common to most of the universities and colleges across the country that are offering this course to the students.

Fees and Financial Aid

Yes, you should have to year wise fees paid. Starting or the year college declared an addmission date, and time. So you should have to payment your fees on that day and time. My first yr addmission fees is 6000 some rupees.. and 1st semester Fees is 500 rupees and lab fees, library fees and canteen fees, etc..these all are added in total amount like 10000. And no I'm never joined any tution or coching centre, because college lecture are really very good.

Faculty

I think my batch time in our college around 30+ faculty members are available. Every department are separates. Also every department have a good faculty. I like our grammar faculty, because she is really very sweet and also very respectfully lady. She teach us very well and care like a mother. Every year have a 2 semester exam and 2 internal exam.

The faculty members were good and supportive, they used to cheat in exams, the marking system was also correct, only the teachers did not give marks for the class, my course was Sanskrit (hons), some teachers of this course were very good and some were useless, it was very difficult to understand the subject

Course Curriculum Overview

The course is difficult, I had difficulty in understanding it, time wasted in giving assignments during exams and this course did not bring any change in my real life, it is useless, I can just become a teacher, the teacher was nothing special either

The entire faculty of the college is good, but tell me, its teachers are much better. Even if you don't attend the class, they mark attendance. And there is also a half Sanskrit teacher who is quite good. The basic thing about marks is that you will get only that many marks as you score, nothing can be deducted, some teacher has deducted your marks.

Campus Life

Sports is a major thing for me to change my thoughts because in girls college people don't really support the sports spirit but here I get a enthusiastic environment. They always asking about problems we facing and reach out to everyone who don't get authentic information and support. One more the seniors here is so supportive like I really don't realise that they will treat us like their sisters and always motivate us.

Placement Experience

My plans to go further studies after completing my degree. Also I want to go for research field so that I can contribute the society too. In my college there is not so good they get but yeah decent package like 6-7 lakh per annum they get. Here is a placement cell which provides internships throughout the year to the students.

The exams are semester wise for my course. Before the semester exam we had internals of 25 marks. Out of that 25 marks 5 marks was for attendence. More then 85% of attendence would give for 5 marks.10 for assignment/test.10 for project work. The theory paper was of 75 marks. The exams was extremely easy if you are a regular students the exams would be extremely easy for you. The questions are repeated every year. Complete pys for 3-4 years and one can attempt whole paper. About faculties, the best thing about them is their sincerity towards teaching. Faculties were extremely strict with attendence. They are always ready to listen to students doubt and clear them. We had a really healthy discussion in all topics with them. I had 5 professors in sanskrit department. 1 male 4 female. At last i would say they are supportive ,help you explore more. In times of freshers or farewell too they give good fun ideas. I really loved them and even after my graduation they are still in my contact

Fees and Financial Aid

The first year fee was 15580. In this 5000 was returned as caution money after the graduation was completed. If i talk about hostel fees it was approx 50000 for a year. In that 15580 fee,500 was library fees. I belong to sanskrit department so i didn't have any lab fees. 1000+ was electricity fees. Then my tution fees was approx 9000+ for the year. There were scholarship for the best student of each semester. Approx 6000 rs was given to them as scholarship. For students of ews category, their fees was refunded. There was medical fees of 500 approx.there was no extra admission fees. In the first i paid 15580 ,2nd year it was 14800+,3rd year also it was 14800+ . There was examination fees every semester .the fees depended on the numbers of papers of that semester. In the first semester i paid 1000 approx i had 5 papers. In 2nd semester again i paid approx 1000 including GE. In the semesters of 2nd year i paid approx 700+. In last year i had no GE so i paid approx 580 rs.

THE FACULTY TO STUDENT RATIO WAS LOW AND THIS HAD A POSTITIVE IMPACT FOR US THE STUDENTS AS EVERY PROFESSOR TRIED TO GUIDE THE STUDENTS ON INDIVIDUAL BASIS AND DIDNT SEE THE WHOLE CLASS A GROUP. THE PROFESSORE WERE HIGHLY QUALIFIED THOUGH IN THE SUBJECT OF SANSKRIT AND WERE ONE OF THE LEADING PROFESSORS IN HELPING THE HERITAGE LANGUAGE BECOME A CAREER FIELD. WE WOULD EVERYTIME GET A CERTAIN TIME LIMIT AFTER CLASSES TO INTERACT WITH THE TEACHERS AND HAVE A SMALL TALK AND CLEAR OUR DOUBTS IF WE HAD ANY. THEY WERE ACCESSIBLE ENOUGH IN THEIR RESPECTIVE CABINS AND CLASSROOMS TOO.

Library is just full of books. If you're are interested then you can sit there almost whole day and everyday. You'll love them.. Library is best part of whole Dyal Singh College. Classrooms are average, not so bad not so good, basically you can gossip and study in them. A lot of sports tournament and matches happen here, you'll always see someone playing. And there are a lot of game too, cricket, basketball, volley ball, football, kabaddi etc. I never came to know about any student who runs things like social groups or portals.. But yeah there are a lot of WhatsApp group and that is where I came to know about this.

But I'll tell everything I learned so I chose it because I didn't got any good course at my score. So I got this. Curriculum is good as syllabus contains a lot of moral values, so everyday is a plus one in your life if have this course for sure. Exams are never lengthy, you'll finish them very soon.. Course Curriculum Overview

I opt for this course due to my intrest in the language sanskrit and I was in general fascinated by Indian Mythology. Our course was a well designed one that covered all sort of major literary text, grammar, vedic and puranic text and give an overall general perspective of sanskrit as a language and about it's connect to the Indian society. We had a around 45 to 50 students in our class that was a pretty descent number. We had a great faculty for all our papers who gave us both a qualitative view of the course and taught ur for exam point of view also. Our exams were conducted very timely without any hindrances and they were a bit difficult.

Placement Experience

We do had a placement cell in our college that do helped us for getting jobs according to the courses we were persuaing and the variety of skill sets and our choices. Moreover a large number Of students were preparing for other government exams for getting a job like CSE, CDS, etc and college assisted in that also through teachers guiding us and a variety of resources and books available in library.
