NISER H-Index Growth

The number of articles that have received a specific number of citations is measured by the H-index. It is a statistic that assesses the influence and productivity of a scientist's or researcher's work.

Over the past five years, NISER’s H-Index has shown a steady upward trajectory, rising from 114 in January 2021 to 158 by June 2025. Notably, each mid-year checkpoint (June) surpassed the corresponding January value, reflecting ongoing research productivity and citation impact. The most significant increase occurred between January 2024 and January 2025, when the index jumped by 12 points, underscoring the institute’s accelerating contribution to high-quality scientific literature.

NISER FAQs

Ques. Does NISER have a placement cell like engineering colleges?

Ans. NISER does not have a conventional placement cell like IITs or NITs since its primary focus is research and higher studies. However, there is a Career Development Cell that tries to direct students to research careers, fellowships, and scientific positions in organisations such as BARC, ISRO, DRDO, or analytics companies. Students who seek jobs generally use faculty referrals, internships, and competitive exam skills (e.g., GATE, CSIR-NET) to get employed in government laboratories or private research departments.

Ques. Are PhD students at NISER financially and career-wise assisted as well?

Ans. Yes, indeed. PhD students are given fellowships between INR 31,000 and INR 35,000/month, sponsored by CSIR, DST, or in-house projects. They travel to international conferences, partner with research labs overseas, and many pursue postdoctoral fellowships overseas. They are trained in teaching assistantships, grant writing, and publication of research, leaving them poised for careers in academia, national laboratories, or industry R&D.

Ques. Is there an alternative plan for those students who do not want to do research post-NISER?

Ans. Yes. Although research is the primary aspect, NISER graduates are highly skilled in problem-solving, data analysis, and quantitative reasoning, which makes them suitable for non-academic jobs in:

  • Data science & analytics
  • Policy research and think tanks
  • Scientific communication
  • Competitive exams (UPSC, SSC, GATE, etc.)

By planning strategically, students can construct diverse careers even outside of conventional science research.

Student view on course curriculum and exams

Exam pattern is semester wise, including midterms and endterms. Apart from that, regular and surprise quizzes take place. The curriculum is very comprehensive and interdisciplinary too. If you want to pursue science and academia ahead, this will be one of the best things that you could pursue.

Internship opportunity provided by the college and stipend

You can apply for internships within the college or outside, under any other professors or companies, if you like. You get a 20k grant for doing summer internship. Mostly you have to mail professors and make your own correspondence for the internship, college is not mandated to help in that.

Yearly fees structure and scholarship

Fee is structured category wise. For gen/ obc candidates, first installment is 18k and then 10k for every semester. You get scholarship of 5k per month and 20k for summer internship, so 80k per year. Overall the education is practically paid for. Very affordable

College fest and various activities

You can join clubs, there are the Social welfare club (Zaariya), literature club, drama and music club, sports club, yoga club, astronomy club and many more. Club inductions are carried out by seniors and members of the club. Infrastructure is very good with a furnished gym, playgrounds and courts, a two- floored library with many other facilities like journal subscriptions and all. Annual intra- and inter college fests are held. IISM is the main sports event of the year, where we play against IISERs and IISC.

Hostel facilities provided by the college

.Hostels are of to types, soh (single occupancy)and doh (double occupancy), you get doh for two years, frim third year onwards soh is alloted. Hostel rooms are spacious, common washrooms, about 4 toilets and 6 bathrooms each for 28 people. Cleaned everyday, canteens and food were subpar but improving

Student views on the faculty

The faculty to student ratio could be low in the first year as the whole batch has almost all the same courses. But doesn't matter, professors are well larned and helpful. In 2nd year, after stream selection, the ratio improves. Professors are quite approachable and most live in the same campus and you can see them taking walks in the evenings.

Admission process of the college

Admission is through NEST (National entrance screening test), forms are out in feb/ march, exam is conducted in June (once a year), has questions from maths, biology, physics and chemistry (best scores of three are considered), seats are reserved as per category

I had also applied for IISER's but I chose niser over them due to its reputable state so I can pursue PhD from foreign institutes. Also one more thing I have seen many place that you can give direct interview in BARC after doing Msc but there is a twist that BARC has very low vacancies(1-2) so please don't consider that factor to join here. To join niser you need to give NEST exam so keep an eye on that and to crack it just solve pyqs it will be sufficient.
