IISER Admission Process 2025

IISER offers admissions to UG and PG programs to all the eligible candidates. For UG Courses, Candidates need to pass their 10+2 from a recognised board followed by IAT (IISER Aptitude Test), and for PG courses, candidates need a Bachelor's degree from a recognised University along with the UGC NET Entrance test followed by an Personal interview.

Below is the detailed description of the admission process of IISER Kolkata-

IISER Campus Facilities and Infrastructure 2025

IISER provides a lot of facilities for the students by building a technology-friendly environment in various locations on the campus. The provided facilities are:

Hostels: At IISER Hostels, there are Shared rooms (mostly 2-4 occupants) with basic furniture, Wi‑Fi in common areas/hostels; electricity mostly reliable but occasional load-shedding may occur. IISER Hostel provides Mess food in both vegetarian and non-vegetarian menus. Many students form cook groups or buy from nearby stalls on weekends.
Library: IISER Kolkata Library subscribes to a host of e-resources like online databases (both full-text and bibliographic), e-journals, e-books etc. to support your research, teaching and study. It purchased archives of journals published by various publishers. It also subscribes to a limited number of journals in print.
Computing facility: The Computing Section remains the custodian of all network and computing solutions of IISER Kolkata. The section provides all core services, such as, mail, web, wiki, helpdesks and home-built academic ERP solutions. The section manages all wired and wireless LAN throughout the campus.
Animal facility: The Animal facility, facilitates animal research of immune-competence and suppressive small animals under a well established "Animal Bio-Safety Level 2 (ABSL2)" state of the art facility. The facility is well equipped with modern instruments as per scientific standards, and houses a well trained technical staff & various scientific teams.
Virtual Classroom: The Virtual Classroom facility which has been christened as Ramanujan Virtual Classroom is capable of transmitting and receiving interactive high-definition video classes across the globe through internet. This room is also equipped with campus LAN and Wi-Fi facility.

Ques. What are the necessary things to be packed before leaving IISER?

Ans. There are certain things to be packed before leaving IISER, as mentioned below.

Arrange travel and temporary accommodation plan from Kolkata/Mohanpur.
Bring essential documents (admission letter, ID proofs, medical records, stipend/bank details).
Pack seasonal clothing, basic kitchen items (if needed), personal medicines, and power backups.

Ques. What are the Sponsored Projects and Consultancy offered at IISER?

Ans. IISER considers sponsored research with utmost importance. Additionally, the consultancy projects to be undertaken by the faculty members will be very much appreciated. The R&D office will coordinate various aspects of project management, like initiation of project proposal, opening an account in the R&D Office, hiring of project personnel, purchase, etc. The Institute encourages the faculty members to undertake consultancy work. The consultancy work should be of such a nature that it enriches the professional experience and the knowledge as a faculty member. Engagement in consultancy work by a faculty member must be communicated to the DoRD office and approved by the DoRD in advance. The faculty member must inform to the DoRD office about the tentative amount of time to be spent monthly for such consultancy work.

Ques. What is the NAD Cell offered at IISER?

Ans. IISER is a part of the National Academic Depository (NAD), an online repository of academic awards lodged by academic institutions. This has been instituted by Government of India through the University Grants Commission.The Ministry of Education in its notification in March 2020 has announced that University Grants Commission (UGC) is authorized to implement National Academic Depository (NAD) as a permanent scheme, in co-operation with the DigiLocker as a single entity. It Operates in fully online mode by allowing lodging of Academic awards in a digital format, maintaining the integrity of access to the database and of the awards lodged in the database. It Allows students to retrieve their lodged academic awards at any time and it Allows employers and other person with prior approval of the concerned student to verify the authenticity of any academic award.

An overview of IISER Kolkata: academics, research, hostel, mess, etc

Likes

IISER Kolkata has very good academic infrastructure. The Research complex is really very big. Teaching labs, lecture halls and all other complexes are centrally air conditioned.
The Student Monitored Canteen serves very good quality food. If you are a non vegetarian, you will not miss you home food much (of course home food is the best). I have stayed in hostel for 8 years befor joining IISER, and trust me iiserK is the best
Faculties are really world class Scientists (check their Research profile and H-index on Google scholar). Most of them are excellent teachers ( yes, not all are good teachers, exceptions do exist).

Dislikes

Single room accomodation is not provided to hostelers as there is shortage of hostel rooms in iiserK.
Far from the city of Kolkata, it has pros and cons both. The good thing is there is lot of space and Greenery but the disadvantage is that we have to go really far for shopping and other necessities.
There are lots of snakes in the campus during the rainy season.

Academic structure and curriculum in the campus

Courses at IISER Kolkata are not like usual curriculum in state or central Universities in India. IISER Kolkata 's academic curriculum is quite similar to that of US and European Universities. The focus of the curriculum is to teach and train us to make us researchers. So the courses are quite relevant if someone wants a career in research. Exams are very frequent in iiser Kolkata, apart from the mid semester and end semester exams, there are regular quizzes/class tests/surprisetests/assignments/grades tutorial problems every week.

What are the internship opportunities in the campus?

Internship opportunities are good. Students can do internships on campus in different labs in their respective departments. They can also apply for internships in other institutions. Students generally do research internships. Very few students go for internships in companies, so there is no official data about the companies offering internship to IISER-K students.

Fees of the course per semester and scholarship

Per semester fees is around 50k(including academic and hostel) (excluding mess fees). One can complete the course in (50×10)k +(50k to 60k)×5= 7.5 to 8 lacs (college fees+other expenses) (There is academic fees relaxation for SC/ST students so they can complete the course in 3.5lacs to 4 lac Rs. There are scholarships available: 1. Inspire scholarship, 60k per year +20k(for summer internship) 2. State government scholarships(if provided by the respective domicile State government) 3.private scholarships : Relaance scholarship, 200k (one time) etc.

Various events, sports and clubs of the college

Annual fest of IISER Kolkata is Inquivesta, generally takes place between March and April. Library is well equipped with all necessary books of different fields of science. There is a good collection of journals too, college also provides access to lots of science journals through the Myloft app. Sports facilities are also very good but yes we cannot compare it with old IITs. The cultural clubs of IISER Kolkata are awesome, IISER Kolkata has been the champion of interest IISER -niser-iisc cultural meet in 2022, 2023 consecutively. There are different clubs like, music club, coding club, drama club, astronomy club, dance club, cricket club, tennis club badminton club, and a lot of other clubs. There is a club called "Ek pehal" , it helps underprivileged children thought different outreach programs like providing them free tuitions in weekends and vacations, organising different cultural and training programs for them, etc .

What are facilities available in the college hostel?

Hostel rooms are equipped with bed, chair, table, almirah,etc. Rooms are either double sharing or tripple sharing for, BS-MS, MS students. Mess food is excellent. Registration fees and hostel fees are including the semester fees i.e. PhD students generally don't get hostel rooms, so they get a good amount of HRA, rented rooms are easily available just outsi6the campus.

Faculty and learning experience in the campus

Faculties are really top notch in their respective fields. All of them joined the institute with years of PhD and post doctoral experience with very strong research profile. Most of them teach really good, some are not very good in teaching although they are great scientists. Interaction with faculty is very common here, we can approach them with doubts in their office hours, right after the class, or we can mail them to schedule a meet. They are very flexible and supportive about interacting with students.

What is the admission process of the college?

One needs 60% minimum marks in 12th, (55% for SC/ ST)to appear in IISER aptitude test. Every year the application forms release in the month of April at the official website of IISER aptitude test (IAT). There are reservations for OBC, EWS, SC, ST, PWD, Kashmiri migrant. The difficulty level may vary, it is more or less similar to jee mains( some questions asked are of jee advanced level, some are very easy especially in biology and chemistry).

Admission:

I was a NEET aspirant but couldn't make it their due to high cutoff and latest year scam. I decided to choose BAMS college but got a good rank in IISER Aptitude Test so decided to come here. This was because IISER is always a good option for good exposure in the world of research and IISER Kolkata is one those prestigious institution. For admission in an IISER one has to clear an entrance test called IAT(IISER Aptitude Test). Secure good rank and should clear the cutoff. After clearing the cutoff one can secure a seat in one of the 7 IISERs, IISc Bangalore, IIT-Madras(for one specific course).

I wanted to opt computational mathematics at ony of the teir-1 engineering college but I couldn't make it, then researched over the field of mathematics and statistics and got the department of mathematics and statistics of IISER Kolkata which had remarkable impacts. So I decided to come across here. Admission process is simple, you have to write an exam called IAT( IISER aptitude test) where they ask you questions from Physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics. Then you get your rank and according to that your are alloted the college by the councelling IISER is completely research based institute, don't expect any placement from this college.

24/7 Library and Computer centre facilitates students' study a lot.
The grounds(football and cricket) are too good and well maintained
The culture as there exists a completely ragging-free environment

Admission:

I haven't applied for any other college. I targeted IISc which didn't come under my rank in IAT. Hence I opted for IISER K being close to it. The only channel for IISER currently is the IAT channel. All the JEE Adv, KVPY channels have been closed.

Likes

Well maintained labs equipped with fully air conditioning.
Natural beauty with lot of greenery of the campus.

Admission:

I wanted to take courses in astrophysics. Only this IISER has a dedicated course for it called MS(Research) in Space Physics. This made me interested to take this course. I got a lot of rejections from many college but I don't want to name them as due to that rejection leaded to this success.

WANT TO BE SCIENTIST , JUST GET ADMISSION IN IISER KOLKATA

Admission:

I took admission in this college on the basis of jee advanced score. I took admission because i was eligible for the fellowship but i didn't get because the government removed the scheme that year. So i was quite disappointed. I also selected in IIT MANDI bio engineering and INDIAN INSTITUTE OF PETROLEUM (IIP) and i was gett guaranteed placement in iip vizag. It was my wrong decision not to go there.

Life at IISER - A Glimpse

Likes

The peer group here is brilliant. We definitely have a future bhatnagar prize winner here

Dislikes

The administration here is very uncooperative.
You're expected to be highly independent, no handholding or even guidance is given
The campus, while beautiful is quite isolated.

Admission:

I got into iit Kharagpur, but I always wanted to do research so thought this was a better option. My original aim was IISc Bangalore, but their cut off was too high. But now for future batches it's easier to get into IISc through the IAT exam which is for both iiser and iisc

IISER Kolkata and why it's one of the best for research

Likes

the campus is quite green and there's a noticeable importance given to nature.

Dislikes

the location could have been a bit more central but it's still pretty good

Admission:

I was always interested in the field of research so that's that, other than that the whole scene of engineering has become oversaturated at this point of time, and engineering colleges not performing as well. To get into any of the IISERs, you will require to pass the IAT exam, or perform very well in either JEE or NEET.

Life at iiser k

Likes

The campus is huge and it's all full of greenery, also as it is a reasearch College the diversity in flora and fauna is much needed.
The people here all belong from different parts of India that helps us realise how varied different states are and even though everyone's culture is different people try to learn other cultures like their own.

Admission:

I have applied to some medical colleges though medical line would fixate me to some particular things but research would open up a whole new world for me and iiser kolkata is one of the best research colleges in India so I choose this over studying medicine

No, it is not a mistake to prefer IISER Kolkata over IIT KGP for an MSc integrated course in Physics. You are going to get a pure science degree so it makes more sense to get the degree from an institute that focuses on that degree. IIT KGP is popular for its engineering degrees. So, you will be mostly surrounded by people who are pursuing engineering degrees. You won’t get to meet many like-minded students. The course structure of integrated MSc at IITs is also outdated.

At IISER Kolkata, you will get a decent course structure and better faculties for an integrated MSc.
