Rutgers University - New Jersey Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
Rutgers admission requirements for Indian students combine an academic threshold with mandatory English-language proof and credential verification.
Postgraduate requirements:
- Academic: Bachelor’s degree (typically 4-year) with minimum 55% or CGPA 5.5/10 (recommended); competitive MS programmes expect 65% or CGPA 6.5/10
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 or IELTS 6.5 (graduate default); Full-Time MBA requires TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0 or PTE 68 or Duolingo 125
- Credential verification: Course-by-course WES evaluation of Indian bachelor’s transcripts
- Standardised tests: GRE or GMAT required for MBA; MS Computer Science lists GRE as recommended, not compulsory
Undergraduate requirements:
- Academic: Class 12 with 70% to 90% aggregate depending on programme (recommended)
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79, IELTS 6.5, Duolingo 115, or PTE 53
Key insight: Rutgers offers an English test waiver for applicants whose bachelor’s or graduate degree was completed at an English-medium institution, or who earn B+ or higher in a college-level US English Composition course; the MBA additionally waives with three or more years of US work experience.
Rutgers University - New Jersey Acceptance Rate 2027
Rutgers-New Brunswick admits roughly 58% of applicants across the New Brunswick campus, making it a moderately selective public research university with room for well-prepared Indian applicants. Selectivity varies sharply by school, with the School of Engineering and the Rutgers Business School running much tighter admit rates than the School of Arts and Sciences.
| Year | Acceptance Rate | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 58% | Stable |
| 2025 | ~60% (estimated) | Tightening |
| 2024 | ~66% (estimated) | Baseline |
Selectivity has tightened modestly as application volume rose. STEM masters at the School of Engineering and Full-Time MBA at Rutgers Business School admit at meaningfully lower rates than the campus average.
Reality check: A 58% campus-wide admit rate is not the odds Indian STEM masters applicants face; expect real admission chances closer to 25% to 35% for programmes like MS Computer Science, MS Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Full-Time MBA where international demand runs high.

Rutgers University - New Jersey Placements and Career Outcomes 2027
Rutgers placements for Indian students are anchored by the University Career Services office and the Rutgers Business School Career Management office, both of which run separate on-campus recruiting cycles for the New York-New Jersey corridor.
- Median MS starting salary: $85,000-$95,000 (~₹81-91 Lakh, market median estimate for STEM graduates in the New York metro)
- Full-Time MBA median base salary: $125,000 (~₹1.20 Crore, estimated per Rutgers Business School employment reports)
- Top recruiting sectors: Financial services, pharmaceuticals and life sciences, technology consulting, and biotech (New Jersey pharma corridor)
- Representative employers: Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Bristol Myers Squibb, JPMorgan Chase, and Amazon (frequent on-campus recruiters)
- Post-study work: 12-month OPT for all graduates; STEM-designated MS programmes qualify for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension
Insider note: The New Jersey pharma corridor (Merck, J&J, BMS) is the single largest employer cluster for Indian Rutgers graduates in biomedical engineering, MPH and life sciences, often filtered through summer internships that convert to full-time offers.
Rutgers University - New Jersey vs Peer Universities
The most direct peers for Rutgers-New Brunswick are large public flagship research universities in the northeastern USA with strong STEM offerings and out-of-state pricing.
| University | QS Rank 2027 | Avg Annual PG Fee (USD) | Avg Annual PG Fee (₹ Lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rutgers-New Brunswick | #328 | $37,689 | ~36.07 Lakh | NJ pharma corridor access and STEM OPT |
| Penn State University Park | #94 (estimated) | $42,000 (estimated) | ~40.21 Lakh (estimated) | Strongest overall QS brand in the peer set |
| University of Maryland College Park | #153 (estimated) | $41,000 (estimated) | ~39.25 Lakh (estimated) | DC-region government and defence recruiting |
| Purdue University West Lafayette | #89 (estimated) | $34,000 (estimated) | ~32.55 Lakh (estimated) | Strongest engineering brand at lower list price |
| Stony Brook University (SUNY) | #380 (estimated) | $28,000 (estimated) | ~26.81 Lakh (estimated) | Cheaper NY-metro alternative with strong CS |
Rutgers stands out on New Jersey pharma and financial-services recruiting proximity and STEM designation across its flagship MS programmes. It sits between the higher-brand publics (Penn State, Purdue) and the lower-priced NY-metro publics (Stony Brook) on both list price and QS positioning.
Rutgers University - New Jersey is a strong fit for Indian applicants targeting a STEM masters or MBA within reach of the New York-New Jersey job market, with a total two-year investment around $110,000 (~₹1.05 Crore) against a median MS starting salary near $90,000. The single strongest Indian-specific advantage is direct STEM OPT eligibility on its major MS programmes, giving graduates up to 36 months of work authorisation.
It is a weaker choice for applicants chasing a top-50 global QS brand for onward PhD placement or for those needing guaranteed on-campus PG housing; in that case, a peer like Purdue University West Lafayette offers a stronger engineering brand at similar tuition.
Rutgers University - New Jersey FAQs
Ques. What is the application fee at Rutgers-New Brunswick for international students?
Ans. Rutgers charges a $70 application fee for both undergraduate and graduate international applicants, which converts to roughly ₹6,702 at the current exchange rate. The Full-Time MBA at Rutgers Business School is a notable exception and carries no application fee for any applicant. Fees are non-refundable and must be paid at submission through the online application portal by credit card.
Ques. How do Indian students prove English proficiency at Rutgers University - New Jersey?
Ans. Indian applicants submit TOEFL iBT (minimum 79), IELTS (6.5), Duolingo (115) or PTE (53) scores for most graduate and undergraduate programmes. The Full-Time MBA sets higher bars at TOEFL 100, IELTS 7.0, PTE 68 or Duolingo 125. Applicants whose bachelor’s degree was completed at a fully English-medium institution can apply for a test waiver at the department level.
Ques. Can Indian students work part-time during their masters at Rutgers?
Ans. Yes, F-1 visa holders may work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the semester and full-time during official breaks. Common on-campus roles include research assistantships, teaching assistantships, library work and dining services. Off-campus work through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) becomes available after one full academic year and requires programme-related authorisation from the International Students Office.
Ques. Does Rutgers waive the GRE for MS Computer Science applicants?
Ans. The Rutgers MS Computer Science programme lists the GRE as recommended rather than required for the Fall 2027 international deadline of February 1, 2027. Applicants with strong undergraduate CGPA and a research-oriented CV are often admitted without a GRE score. Submitting a competitive GRE quantitative score (above 165) still strengthens applications from candidates with lower CGPAs or non-CS bachelor’s backgrounds.
Ques. Which banks recognise Rutgers-New Brunswick for education loans?
Ans. Rutgers-New Brunswick is on the approved international university lists of most major Indian education loan providers including HDFC Credila, Avanse Financial Services, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, State Bank of India, and Bank of Baroda. US-based lenders like MPOWER Financing and Prodigy Finance also lend to admitted Indian applicants without a US cosigner. Loan sanction typically requires the official I-20 form and cost-of-attendance letter.
Ques. How long does OPT last after graduation at Rutgers University - New Jersey?
Ans. All F-1 graduates qualify for 12 months of standard Optional Practical Training (OPT) after completing their degree. Graduates of STEM-designated programmes, including MS Computer Science, MS Electrical and Computer Engineering, MS Industrial and Systems Engineering, and MS Information Technology and Analytics, qualify for an additional 24-month STEM OPT extension. Total legal work authorisation therefore reaches 36 months for most Rutgers MS graduates.
Ques. What documents does WES require for Rutgers transcript verification?
Ans. WES requires an official transcript issued and sealed by the awarding Indian university (not the college), along with the degree certificate for completed programmes. Documents must be sent directly by the university to WES in a sealed envelope. Indian applicants should begin the WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation at least eight weeks before the earliest programme deadline to allow for transcript-issuing delays.
Ques. Is a portfolio required for Rutgers Mason Gross School of the Arts?
Ans. Yes, all Mason Gross School of the Arts programmes require a portfolio or audition in addition to the standard Rutgers application. Visual arts and design applicants submit digital portfolios via SlideRoom, while music, dance and theatre applicants complete live or recorded auditions. Portfolio requirements vary by discipline, and international applicants should check the specific programme page for accepted file formats and audition windows.

- Research Opportunities are great
Dislikes
- Career fairs are unhelpful
- Campus Safety is a concern for girls
- Buses are always overcrowded and you cannot walk because of how huge the campus is
Campus Life
- Rutgers university has 4 campuses. It's in New Jersey, nearby towns. Campuses are Cook Douglass and College Ave in New Brunswick city and Busch and Livingston campus in Piscataway city. Each campus has its own library, sports recreation area, and health centre. There are many fests mainly cultural fests, rutgers day, hotdog day, etc.
- There are many clubs at Rutgers, like cultural clubs, the cloud computing club, and the graduate students club. I am part of the Rutgers Mobile App development club. Rutgers also has many hackathons, like HackRU and HackHers.
Fees
-
Fees for each semester are around 15k dollars. if i give the breakdown of my spring 2025 fee structure:
- Technology fee – $250
- Health insurance fee – $1709
- Student fee – $891
- Course/Other fees – $250
- School fee – $216
- Tuition fee – $13149
- Total – $16420.50
- The fee is charged credit-wise; one course is 3 credits. So for each subject in spring, I paid $4383. In summer, I took up one course, and my fees were around 4,215.00 for tuition and the other was around $162.
- Monthly expenses can vary, but my rent is around 650 (excluding electricity), my Electricity bill is around $40, groceries are around $100, and Wi-Fi and home insurance are around $15, and additional miscellaneous expenses for parties, eating out, and travel can be around an additional $100-150.

- The campus was amazing
- There were multiple clubs for every interest
- The teachers were really helpful
Dislikes
- There were certain safety concerns
- There were robberies around campus
- The campus buses were extremely helpful but on weekends they didn’t function too well
Campus Life
-
Campus infrastructure was amazing. There were some really old buildings with historical significance and some really cool new buildings. We have an art museum, multiple gyms and countless other fun places.
-
We had the best festivals and almost everyday there was some event happening somewhere. All the events were mostly free except for a few exclusive ones.
Fees
- The fee was credit based. Tuition was roughly around 18k (inc of charges) for 9 credits or more per semester. I didn’t take a hostel but stayed off campus where the rent plus utilities were roughly 1k per month.
- Monthly expenses were around 1.5k
- There were no major transportation costs as Rutgers provides free shuttle within the campus and my place was walking distance. Food was the major expense but even for that Rutgers provided free groceries.
Likes
- Extensive library with lots of books, articles, journal entries etc
- Easily approachable professors, who offer excellent guidance and reply almost immediately to emails
- Wide variety of cultural programs, clubs, activities etc
Dislikes
- Long distances between each campus. Always need to take a bus
- Weather is very cold sometimes
- There are no other things that I dislike as of now
Campus Life
- New Brunswick has 5 campuses in total. It is spread around the entire city of New Brunswick. There are more campuses in Newark, Camden and Stratford focusing on health sciences, etc.
- A lot of events like career fairs, Friendship Fridays, Rutgers Day, and many more happen all around the year. There are literally at least 2 events happening every day.
- There are multiple student organisations, study clubs, sport clubs, research groups, and many more, some of which require a small yearly subscription and some are free.
Overview
I chose it for the unique program of Master of Business and Science. It has courses in both technical and business domains.
Fees
The program fee is approximately $65000.
Overview
The size of the school was one of the big reasons. I like having a really large school to live and work on. The school is also really well known so getting jobs after would be very convenient. They also have good internship opportunities.
Fees
Fees are standard like having a meal plan freshman year and then textbooks and transportation. Tuition and housing are better compared to other schools.
