Indiana University Bloomington Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027

Indian applicants must clear both an academic threshold and an English proficiency benchmark. Document-level specifics sit in the Admissions silo linked in the previous section.

Indiana University Bloomington Postgraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Recognised four-year bachelor’s degree with 65%+ (roughly 3.0/4.0 GPA); Kelley MBA typically expects 70%+ from a top-tier Indian institution
  • English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 79 (0-120 legacy scale) or IELTS 6.5 with no band below 6.0
  • Credential verification: WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation required by most graduate schools
  • Standardised tests: GRE required or recommended for most Luddy MS tracks; Kelley MBA requires GMAT or GRE with 2+ years work experience

Indiana University Bloomington Undergraduate Requirements

  • Academic: Completion of CBSE, ISC or state board Class 12 with B average or higher (roughly 75%+)

  • Test-optional: SAT and ACT scores are optional for the 2027 undergraduate cycle

Key insight: Applicants with TOEFL 60 to 78 or IELTS 5.5 to 6.0 may still receive conditional admission. They must clear the IU English for Academic Purposes placement test on arrival, which typically adds one semester of English coursework to the degree.

Indiana University Bloomington Acceptance Rate 2027

Indiana University Bloomington reported an overall undergraduate acceptance rate of 78% for its most recent published cycle. International applicants faced a slightly tighter 70.6% admit rate in the Fall 2023 cohort, the last year with published international-specific data.

CycleOverall Acceptance RateInternational Acceptance Rate
Fall 2026 (Class of 2030)~80% (estimated figure)Not yet published
Fall 202478%Not published
Fall 202382%70.6%

As per IU’s published cohort data, 3,398 of 4,810 international applicants received offers in Fall 2023. Application volume for the Class of 2028 crossed 67,000, driven largely by out-of-state and international applicants.

Reality check: A 78% overall rate does not translate to easy entry for Indian applicants targeting Kelley or Luddy. Programme-level admission for MS Computer Science and Kelley MBA runs materially tighter than the university-wide figure, and both channels prioritise strong quantitative preparation.

  • Housing: Guaranteed for first-year international undergraduates; graduate housing at Union Street and Tulip Tree is application-based
  • Facilities: The Herman B Wells Library holds 9.6 million volumes, one of the largest university library systems in the United States
  • Indian community: The India Student Association hosts Diwali, Holi and Republic Day events; Bloomington has three Indian grocery stores and multiple South Indian restaurants

IU stands out on affordability against Illinois and Michigan State while retaining a globally ranked MBA. Kelley placement outcomes match or exceed most Big Ten peers outside the Michigan Ross tier.

Indiana University Bloomington fits Indian applicants who want a globally recognised MBA and strong STEM OPT eligibility, delivered at a cost below most private US peers. The two-year Kelley MBA investment of INR 1.13 crore against a mean base salary of INR 1.28 crore delivers a workable payback window for consulting-track graduates.

Indian graduates benefit from extended STEM OPT eligibility on Luddy master’s programmes, a large India Student Association and Kelley’s dedicated Indian alumni mentor network. F-1 visa pathway approval from Indian consulates typically clears well within the standard summer window when the I-20 arrives on time.

IU is not the right fit for applicants chasing Ivy League brand equity or an elite global-rank tier. Applicants set on that tier should look toward the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign for computer science depth or a Michigan or Wisconsin flagship for a broader Big Ten alternative.

Indiana University Bloomington FAQs

Ques. What English test waivers does Indiana University Bloomington offer Indian applicants?

Ans. Indiana University Bloomington waives the English proficiency test for applicants who complete three or more consecutive years of full-time study at an accredited English-medium institution. Indian applicants from all-English CBSE, ICSE or IB schools sometimes qualify, subject to official transcript review. Contact the Office of International Services before applying to confirm eligibility for your specific school and programme.

Ques. Can I apply to IU Bloomington MS Computer Science without GRE?

Ans. Kelley MBA still requires GMAT or GRE, but several Luddy School MS tracks have removed the GRE requirement or made it optional in recent admission cycles. Check the specific MS Computer Science page on the Luddy site for the current test policy before submitting. Strong Indian applicants with a 70%+ bachelor’s from a recognised institution and relevant project experience are competitive without GRE scores.

Ques. How much is the Indiana University Bloomington international application fee?

Ans. The Indiana University Bloomington international undergraduate application fee is USD 65, payable online through the Common Application or the IU application portal. Graduate application fees vary by school, ranging from USD 75 for most Luddy MS and Kelley MBA programmes to USD 105 for selected Kelley MS tracks. Fee waivers apply for participants of certain fellowship programmes; check the departmental application page.

Ques. Does IU Bloomington accept three-year Indian bachelor’s degrees?

Ans. Most graduate schools at IU Bloomington require a four-year bachelor’s degree equivalent to a US bachelor’s for admission. Some Kelley MS programmes accept three-year degrees with WES ICAP verification confirming equivalence.

Ques. What English-taught dual degrees exist at Indiana University Bloomington?

Ans. Indiana University Bloomington offers dual-degree pathways such as Kelley MBA with the Maurer School of Law (JD/MBA) and the School of Public and Environmental Affairs (MBA/MPA). All dual degrees are English-medium and open to international applicants. Kelley also runs a Global Programs semester exchange with partner business schools in Europe, Asia and Latin America for enrolled MBA students.

Ques. Can international students work part-time at IU Bloomington?

Ans. Yes, F-1 international students at IU Bloomington may work up to 20 hours per week on-campus during the academic session and full-time during official university breaks. On-campus jobs range from library assistants and dining hall staff to graduate research assistantships. Off-campus work requires Curricular Practical Training or Optional Practical Training authorisation and cannot begin during the first academic year.

Ques. How do Indian banks finance loans for Indiana University Bloomington?

Ans. Indiana University Bloomington is a recognised institution for education loans from HDFC Credila, Avanse, Auxilo, ICICI Bank and SBI Global Ed-Vantage. Most Indian public and private lenders fund up to INR 1.5 crore for Kelley MBA applicants and up to INR 1 crore for Luddy MS Computer Science. Collateral is generally required above INR 40 lakh; unsecured caps vary by lender.

Ques. What transcript verification does IU Bloomington require from Indian applicants?

Ans. Indiana University Bloomington requires official academic transcripts from every post-secondary institution attended, sent directly by the issuing institution in sealed envelopes. Indian graduate applicants must also submit a WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation for degrees from universities not on the IU-approved direct list. Photocopies attested by the institution are not accepted for final admission or I-20 issuance.

Campus Life

  • Campus life is amazing. We have lots of events every week, every single day, even. There are hundreds of clubs that could include:
    • dancing
    • extracurricular activities
    • sports
    • arts
    • music
    • hiking
    • all sorts of things
  • These are all student clubs run by student bodies. There are also research clubs like:
    • Quantum Physics Club
    • physics club
    • chemistry club
    • mathematics club
  • There can also be a movie club or an anime club.

Fees

  • The best way is to go to the official university website and search for the relevant department and check the tuition cost there, because the tuition varies on a yearly basis.

  • A vast number of clubs are in IU, and events are held every semester, almost every day; there are multiple events. You are free to even start your own club and communities. A variety of sports facilities for different sport types were provided for every student, and there was also one credit course you could take to like learn a sport as well and get your stress off from actual studies.
  • Herman B Wells Library, one of the biggest libraries in IU, was my go-to place during midterms or exams. Not just that library, there were a couple more libraries too in each building.

  • They are awesome with so many fun events & activities round the year. There are almost 12-20 campuses & the entire town is our campus, to be honest! There are faculties of all the domains. Homecoming, basketball matches & Thanksgiving are highlights. There is a pre-exam relaxing week as well, which has numerous fun activities. IUB fair has its own beauty!

Overview

My college experience this year was really one to remember. Apart from the success academically I feel I enjoyed the process of having fun and making most of opportunities presented to me. I thoroughly enjoyed making new friends who were local citizens of Bloomington. Interacting with them on a daily basis showed me how different cultures operate and how diverse IU really is.

IU has a whole lot of extracurricular activities like intramural sports and carnivals. Moreover, the recreational sports centre offers various sports where you can go with your friends, rent out equipment and play for as long as you want. Lastly, the Herman B Wells Library is one of the best study spots on campus. It has rooms one can book for free to study with friends, a Starbucks as well as an eatery.

Overview

The program ranking is pretty good, not a very expensive state, beautiful campus The overall experience has been pretty good. The programs are well ranked and the faculty is impressive. The infrastructure is really good and you will find lots of opportunities. The job search is basically in your own hands(true for all US universities), but you will find a lot of advisory for it. The campus is in top 10 beautiful campuses of USA.

Overview

My overall experience at Indiana University has been very enlightening. I have learned a lot not just about my subject but also about myself and life in general. My biggest challenge after coming here was to settle and fit in to the culture and as time went by it was to stay here and make a mark for myself. I have been able to form a lot of meaningful friendships and connections with people from all walks of life. I would definitely recommend people to come and study abroad if they have the resources to as it can really shape you into a well rounded individual.

The campus life is well balanced and there are lot of places to get involved in. There are multiple events and extracurricular activities taking place on campus all year round. We have a club involvement fair in the beginning of each semester for students to explore them and join them if they are interested. Wifi is free on campus and is available in all the buildings at all times. There is a huge sports facility with almost 50 different sports and a gym area. There are 3 main libraries on campus with a wide variety of subjects and books available.

Overview

I love it at Indiana University. The campus is so pretty and it is so easy to go on long walks through campus and feel an amazing energy all around you. It’s also easy to find somewhere to sit and do work or relax or hang out with friends. Everyone here has a lot of school spirit and there’s an amazing sense of community at such a big school. I met some of my lifelong friends here and got some amazing opportunities through extracurricular involvements and networking. I’ve grown a lot professionally and personally and I owe that to this school.

There are lots of opportunities to get involved on campus in a large variety of clubs. Clubs range from not competitive at all to very selective , it depends on your interest but there’s a lot of opportunities regardless. There’s three main sports facilities and a large focus on athletics, so students have a chance to play many different sports. There’s also a lot of research facilities and two main libraries for students to study at and get academically involved.

Overview

I chose to this university because it has great faculty working in the area of my interest (Functional Analysis and Operator Theory). At IIT Delhi, we follow books written by authors that have worked/studied at Indiana University. In fact, my current supervisor (Prof. Hari Bercovici) at IU was my top choice because I was inspired by a book written by him. His research credentials are amazing and that’s what matters the most in PhD. The university’s math department ranks 34 and it’s situated in Bloomington which is a very pleasant place to live. I also had offers from - University of Oregon, University of California (Davis) and NYU(unfunded).
