- By pursuing an undergraduate program in Finance from the Kelley School of Business, I intend to gain a deeper understanding in the fields of corporate finance, financial reporting, and cost management. This would enable me to build ‘great ships’ and keep them from ‘sinking’. Furthermore, the ‘Security Trading and Market Making’ elective excites me since I have a keen interest in the stock market. I eagerly follow my country’s National Stock Exchange and Bombay Stock Exchange and I also invest in index funds. A business and finance degree with Kelley School of Business will inculcate in me the skills and knowledge required to monitor financial markets and the performance of individual securities/ commodities. In addition, The IUSG first year internship program will give me the opportunity to utilize and develop my leadership skills, thereby making me ‘future ready’!
- I like the fact that IU hosts events on a daily basis that an are free to attend and make the student feel light after a heavy week of studying. Carnivals, balance week( an all day event that goes on for weeks to manage students mental health during finals week) and many more extracurricular activities in sports really help the student to cool off. Moreover, the place became home to me in a period of only 9 months.
Dislikes
- One thing I did not like about my university is the food! Being an international student I found the food average and had problems with the quality of food in my freshman year. After talking to a few locals as well, I understood that they too had such problems even though they were locally situated.
Required Exams for Admission
My college experience this year was really one to remember. Apart from the success academically I feel I enjoyed the process of having fun and making most of opportunities presented to me. I thoroughly enjoyed making new friends who were local citizens of Bloomington. Interacting with them on a daily basis showed me how different cultures operate and how diverse IU really is.
Course Curriculum
Our course curriculum is really relevant and updated according to the world events. We are taught using real world examples which makes it easier to understand as we have a reference point. As of now we haven’t been given any research experience. As a sophomore I think such opportunities will open up to me!
Faculty
The faculty is really approachable and really well-versed in their subject. I was able to contact them outside of our classroom very easily. Professor K. Prange, who was my professor for business presentations, really helped me grow my presentation skills and work around the challenges I had in the class.
Campus Life
IU has a whole lot of extracurricular activities like intramural sports and carnivals. Moreover, the recreational sports centre offers various sports where you can go with your friends, rent out equipment and play for as long as you want. Lastly, the Herman B Wells Library is one of the best study spots on campus. It has rooms one can book for free to study with friends, a Starbucks as well as an eatery.
Placement
I am a sophomore, so I haven’t gone through the placement process myself. However, I can highlight the process. IU, especially Kelley hosts various company fairs of companies like Deloitte, PWC, EY and many more. Students have the opportunity to interact with people from this very company and create a relationship with their representatives. Unlike the Indian system, where an interview is created on the spot for students, here, students have to impress the company representative with their skills on the spot in terms of an informal conversation and land an interview at a later stage. Kelly Students have a good track record of working at high level companies in the US finance sector!
Accommodation
I had a double sharing room, which cost around $8000. The first-year students are required to stay on campus. I was in a standard room, which cost less. However, advanced rooms are costing around $10,000-$12,000 USD. The main difference between them is community washrooms and a private washroom.
Exams
-IELTS 8.5 -SAT 1320 -There were no requirements regarding SAT scores in my admission year. However, a 6.5 on the IELTS test was required to complete my English language requirements. I submitted a number of LOR’S from people I had worked under. A notable one would be a professor from NYU under whom I had taken a class in grade 11. In the CV, I had included all my activities in and out of school starting from grade 9. I paid for emphasis on activities at a higher class and only included those activities from lower grades with higher weightage. Interview round: Yes I had a Maths Knowledge check test online which I had to take. It was based on high school math mixed with college level math. The test was designed to test my knowledge in the math subjects I would be required to take. If I scored below a certain score I would be given an introductory class in the first semester rather than starting at a higher level class
