Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Admission Requirements for Indian Applicants 2027
The Graduate School sets baseline eligibility bars, and individual departments layer their own minimums on top.
PG Requirements
- Academic: Four-year Indian bachelor’s degree with 60% aggregate or CGPA 6.0/10 (recommended); a strong technical or research track record for STEM programmes
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 4.5 (1-6 scale from 21 January 2026) / 90 (0-120 legacy scale), with 4.5 or higher in each subsection; or
IELTS 6.5 overall - Credential verification: WES ICAP course-by-course evaluation recommended for Indian transcripts
- GRE: Program-dependent; the Graduate School allows departmental waivers, and CS, ECE, and Aerospace typically require or strongly recommend GRE
UG Requirements
- Academic: Class 12 with 80% to 90% (recommended) from CBSE, ISC, or state board; strong Maths and Physics for engineering
- English proficiency: TOEFL iBT 4.5 (new scale) / 90 (legacy), or IELTS 6.5
Key insight: An IELTS waiver is available where the Indian bachelor’s degree was fully taught in English at an accredited university, but the applicant must upload a formal medium-of-instruction letter with the application.
Virginia Tech Acceptance Rate 2027
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University reports an undergraduate acceptance rate of 55% (estimated) for the most recent admissions cycle, based on published applicant and admit counts. The graduate acceptance rate is not centrally disclosed and varies sharply by department, with competitive engineering and computer science tracks running materially tighter.
| Year | Acceptance Rate (UG) | Trend |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 cycle | 55% (estimated) | Stable |
| 2025 cycle | 57% (estimated) | Modest tightening |
Indian PG applicants to CS and ECE should assume tighter selectivity, since seat volume is limited and application volume is high. UG applicants sit closer to the published headline rate.
Reality check: A 55% headline rate flatters weaker Indian STEM profiles. Competitive PG programmes here treat GRE quantitative scores, research experience, and departmental fit as harder filters than the overall admit rate suggests.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University vs Peer Universities
Compared against public engineering peers of similar tier and Indian applicant volume, Virginia Tech sits mid-pack on QS world rank but competitive on subject rank and total programme cost.
| University | QS World 2027 | Annual PG Fee (USD) | Annual PG Fee (INR lakh) | Differentiator |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University | #366 | 33,582 to 39,210 | 32.2 to 37.5 lakh | Strong mining, aerospace, ECE; DC-area Innovation Campus |
| Purdue University | NA (verify) | 32,000 to 39,000 (market) | 30.6 to 37.3 lakh | Larger Indian cohort; engineering breadth |
| Texas A&M University | NA (verify) | 28,000 to 36,000 (market) | 26.8 to 34.5 lakh | Petroleum and aerospace strength; Texas oil-and-gas recruiting |
| Penn State University Park | NA (verify) | 38,000 to 42,000 (market) | 36.4 to 40.2 lakh | Materials and industrial engineering depth |
| Georgia Institute of Technology | NA (verify) | 32,000 to 34,000 (market) | 30.6 to 32.6 lakh | Atlanta tech hub; higher CS selectivity |
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University stands out on total programme cost for aerospace and mining engineering, and on federal contractor proximity through Alexandria. Georgia Tech and Purdue draw larger Indian PG cohorts, so peer network scale is materially bigger there.
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is a strong fit for the Indian STEM applicant who wants a mid-cost public R1 with subject-rank credibility in engineering rather than a name-brand top-100 world rank. Two years of PG tuition and living at roughly INR 100 lakh total, against a market median MS engineering salary near INR 86 lakh, gives a payback horizon under two working years for STEM OPT holders who convert to full-time roles.
It is not the right shortlist pick for applicants who need a coastal-metro location, a large brand-name QS top-100 stamp on the resume, or a Pamplin MBA at parity with M7 US business schools; a Purdue or Georgia Tech engineering programme, or a coastal MBA, better fits those goals.

- Top 5 Colleges for Experimental Aerodynamics in the US Virginia Tech is one of the best colleges that specialize in experimental aerodynamics, where you are able to get the best education and study under the most respected professors in the field. Very high-level research opportunities are also available. My main lab was a NASA wind tunnel which is one of the largest university owned wind tunnels in the USA.
- Government Contracts for Grad Student Scholarships and Funding Scholarships and research funding are mainly provided through government agencies like NASA, US Air Force, Office of Naval Research etc. Most of these academic contracts are not restricted to US citizens which means that with the right skills, international students like us Indians are able to obtain them. Virginia Tech prides itself in the involvement of high-level, cutting-edge projects for defence industries and major and upcoming commercial aerospace companies.
- Cutting-Edge Labs and Equipment At Virginia Tech, students have access to state-of-the-art labs and equipment. The technical assistance provided at these facilities is top-notch. Students are also provided the chance to attend conferences, workshops, and be part of professional organizations as a part of the graduate school with all expenses covered.
Dislikes
- Harsh Winter Weather The winters are extremely cold, with a lot of snow, so you’ll need to be prepared for some tough weather conditions.
- Challenging Projects and Courses The projects and courses are very demanding, requiring a significant amount of time and effort focused on academics. No other dislikes as I did not face any other issue.
Campus Life
- Virginia Tech is often described as a campus town, meaning the entire town is centered around the university. Because of this, we have access to several large libraries, numerous indoor and outdoor sports facilities for all kinds of sports, and even our own hospital. There are also various other medical services available in and around campus.
- The campus is always buzzing with life—music concerts, dance parties, and cultural events happen regularly. Thanks to our large international community, festivals from different cultures are celebrated throughout the year. Since Virginia Tech is also known as a military-friendly school, there are unique events and celebrations organized by the ROTC and Corps of Cadets. Honestly, there’s something going on every week, so it’s tough to keep track of everything!
- There are plenty of clubs for both technical and non-technical interests. I personally joined a hiking group that explores various mountain trails around Virginia. I was also involved in a research group called CREATe, which focuses on aerodynamic research. As part of CREATe, we held book and journal review sessions, gave quick two-minute research presentations, and even organized potlucks, sports events, and more.

The fee is charged per semester, and there are two semesters in a year. My monthly expenses were under $1,250. Rent was $750 and covered everything—electricity, internet, water, garbage, and so on. I spent around $400 a month on food, including groceries and the occasional takeout. I didn’t have any extra transportation costs since that was included in the university fees. Health insurance was also covered by the college as part of my scholarship.

- I like game days, college football is a big deal here and many people tailgate with borgs before the games! It is also a very walkable campus and the public transit to get around is pretty good as the buses are free. It just ends early though so make sure you know when the last bus runs.
Dislikes
- I dislike how the dining hall food is so overpriced. Parking on campus is expensive and they are always giving tickets if you don't have a parking permit.
Overview
I chose this university as their cybersecurity program appealed to me and I am a in-state student and it was in state college for me. When I first started I wasn't too fond of it as it was covid but as time grew and I made friends and explored campus it really grew on me and now I love it.
Campus Life
The library is good, it is 4 stories. The wifi is pretty fast as well. There are a variety of clubs to join and a club fair as well. We have housing fairs to help students find off-campus housing. There's an international fair as well to promote diversity. One thing I don't like is that we have 2 gyms but 1 gym has been closed for years now for renovation so everyone in the campus is just sharing 1 gym so it gets busy at times.
Likes
- I chose this because of tennis and location of the school as well as my family.
Overview
I genuinely enjoy my experience at Virginia Tech. I’m very comfortable here and I like the athletics and the food.
Campus Life
There are many extracurricular activists on campus as well as a spacious libraries. I’m an athlete so I really enjoy the athletic facilities at Virginia Tech.
Overview
Virginia Tech is the campus of inventing the future, and the future lies in the potential of the students. I have been accepted early-decision into Virginia Tech and will major in broadcast journalism and plan to minor in psychology with a long-term goal of being a reporter. One of the main reasons why I fell in love with Virginia Tech is because of the school's motto, 'That I may serve. Throughout my high school career, I have inspired others to get their stories heard through journalism as well as inspire others to give back to the community. Virginia Tech is the perfect school to continue these passions both on campus, and into the future. Virginia Tech is expanding its communication studies major at just the right time for me to take advantage of all there is to offer. From state-of-the-art equipment to the best connections possible, a multimedia journalism major is very versatile and I believe that Virginia Tech is one of the best places I could ever gain these skills from. The 'Hokies-Hiring-Hokies' program makes me confident that I will have the resources provided to me to be successful even after graduation. Being able to communicate with people is a crucial part of being a journalist. Virginia Tech is the perfect campus for me and I am beyond excited because they provide plentiful opportunities to get involved through leadership in the field of journalism to create positive change. I will use the experiences I have gained throughout my high school career to step up and continue to make a difference on campus and in the future. I am confident that I will leave Virginia Tech as a stronger student with all of the resources I need to excel as a reporter in the field of multimedia journalism.
Fees
It costs about $27,000 to attend for one year. I got scholarships and grants from the school, but I probably will not get as many this upcoming year. My school is quite stingy on the amount of financial aid it awards to students.
Overview
It's an amazing job outlook. It is very perfect for friend making. It has an amazing football team. The parties were good. The campus life is good. You never feel alone and people will always be around if you need anyone.
Fees
There are a lot of fees. Housing, food, activity fees, tuition, staff. There's a lot to think about when going to this college but I think all the fees are worth it. Oh, I also forgot books.

International students at Virginia Tech are not offered scholarships from the university’s side. However, international students can apply for external scholarships.
