What Students Say?
Likes
- I like game days, college football is a big deal here and many people tailgate with borgs before the games! It is also a very walkable campus and the public transit to get around is pretty good as the buses are free. It just ends early though so make sure you know when the last bus runs.
Dislikes
- I dislike how the dining hall food is so overpriced. Parking on campus is expensive and they are always giving tickets if you don't have a parking permit.
I chose this university as their cybersecurity program appealed to me and I am a in-state student and it was in state college for me. When I first started I wasn't too fond of it as it was covid but as time grew and I made friends and explored campus it really grew on me and now I love it.
Course Curriculum
My course syllabus is good but I was not given any research experience through my course. You need to apply on your own to get a research position etc.
Exams
- The requirements were to complete high school. Having a GPA of 3.5+ after finishing high school definitely helps. I took a lot of AP courses in high school as well and had credit from those. I took the SAT as well and got about 1300/1600. - I have a 3.7 GPA Virginia Tech Cybersecurity - Grade 10 - 3.7; Grade 12- 3.9 Biotech program in high school - No, it was not required for me to submit any SOP, LOR or CV. They may require it if you are international student though. - No, I did not have any interviews for this college
Placement
I have done a study abroad in Dubai through my college for a month and we had various company visits and did a research project for flydubai.
Internship
I did a research assistant position at Virginia Tech, I got about 1k for this. I found out about this through a email a professor sent to the class.
Fees
I pay about 12k a year for my apartment. Tuition is about 12k as well. and 6k ish in transportation costs and other spending.
Scholarship
Yes, I did get scholarships and several grants. There is a Hokie scholarship central you can apply for scholarships on that. I do not know exact names but all my tuition is covered and I get reimbursements instead for each semester.
Faculty
It just depends on the class, I've been in lectures with 500 students and a professor and TA. I've also been in lectures with 18 students and 1 professor.
Campus Life
The library is good, it is 4 stories. The wifi is pretty fast as well. There are a variety of clubs to join and a club fair as well. We have housing fairs to help students find off-campus housing. There's an international fair as well to promote diversity. One thing I don't like is that we have 2 gyms but 1 gym has been closed for years now for renovation so everyone in the campus is just sharing 1 gym so it gets busy at times.
Hostel
Usually, dorms are shared with one person, you can get a single dorm if you are lucky. idk too much about dorms as I've had an apartment my entire year. My apartment is about 12k a year. It's a 4 bed 4 bath so I have my own bathroom and walk-in closet attached to my room. The only things shared are the living area and kitchen. And it is very close to campus, but super expensive.
