IIM Calcutta PGCFBM FAQs
Ques. Is the PGCFBM only for owners of large family businesses, or can small business owners also apply?
Ans. The PGCFBM is open to owners and scions of family-managed businesses of all sizes, from small and medium enterprises to large family conglomerates. The programme is specifically designed to address the challenges faced by family businesses at all stages of growth. Senior managers (reporting to the owner) with at least 10 years of experience are also eligible.
Ques. What is the difference between the PGCFBM and a regular MBA for family business owners?
Ans. The PGCFBM is a 1-year part-time programme specifically tailored for family business owners and managers, covering topics like family dynamics, inter-generational succession, professionalizing family businesses, and taking businesses global. A regular MBA is a 2-year full-time programme for fresh graduates or early-career professionals. The PGCFBM allows participants to continue running their businesses while studying, which is not possible with a full-time MBA.
Ques. How are the Sunday online sessions structured?
Ans. Sessions are held every Sunday from 3:30 PM to 6:30 PM (3 hours) on the D2D online platform. The sessions are interactive and include case studies, group discussions, and guest lectures from industry practitioners. Some additional sessions may be scheduled as required.
Ques. Are the two campus visits at IIM Calcutta mandatory?
Ans. Yes, attendance at both 5-day campus visits at IIM Calcutta is mandatory for successful completion of the programme. The first campus visit is held at the beginning of the programme and the second towards the end. These visits provide immersive learning, networking, and direct interaction with IIM Calcutta faculty.
Ques. What is the Capstone Project in the PGCFBM?
Ans. The Capstone Project is a key component of the PGCFBM curriculum where participants apply the concepts learned during the programme to their own family business. It involves identifying a real business challenge or opportunity in their family enterprise and developing a strategic solution. The project is guided by IIM Calcutta faculty and is presented at the end of the programme.
