SASTRA BALLB FAQs

Ques. Is CLAT mandatory for admission to B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) at SASTRA?

Ans. CLAT is required for Phase I admissions (based solely on CLAT scores). For Phase II, CLAT is not mandatory - if you haven't appeared for CLAT, your CLAT score is treated as 0 and your rank is computed based on Class XII marks alone (50% weightage). So you can still get admission in Phase II without a CLAT score, though having a good CLAT score significantly improves your chances.

Ques. What is the minimum CLAT score or rank required to get into SASTRA Law?

Ans. SASTRA is not an NLU and does not have a fixed CLAT cutoff published officially. Based on past trends, students with CLAT ranks in the range of 5,000 to 15,000 have secured admission. However, since Phase II also considers Class XII marks, students with strong board scores but moderate CLAT ranks can also get in. The exact cutoff varies each year based on the number of applicants and seats available.

Ques. Can I choose between B.A. LL.B., B.B.A. LL.B., and B.Com. LL.B. at SASTRA? What is the difference?

Ans. Yes, SASTRA offers all three 5-year integrated law programmes. The difference lies in the Arts/Commerce/Management subjects integrated with the law curriculum. B.A. LL.B. integrates Political Science, Sociology, Economics, and Public Policy. B.B.A. LL.B. integrates Business Administration subjects. B.Com. LL.B. integrates Commerce subjects. The core law subjects are largely the same across all three programmes. Your choice should depend on your interest in the non-law subjects and your intended career path (e.g., B.Com. LL.B. is preferred for tax law or corporate law careers).

Ques. How is the moot court culture at SASTRA Law School?

Ans. SASTRA has a very active moot court culture. The School of Law hosts the prestigious Nani Palkhivala Memorial National Tax Moot Court Competition annually, which attracts participants from top law schools across India. Students participate in national and international moot court competitions from early years. The dedicated moot court hall in the Chanakya building provides excellent practice facilities. Faculty members actively mentor students for competitions, and past students have won several national-level moot court competitions.

Ques. Is the campus strict for law students? Are there separate rules for law students compared to engineering students?

Ans. SASTRA is known for its strict campus rules, which apply to all students including law students. Girls have a hostel curfew of 6:00-6:30 PM, and boys must return by 8:30 PM. Western wear is not allowed on campus. Non-vegetarian food is not permitted inside the campus. However, law students have separate academic schedules, exam dates, and a separate academic building (Chanakya), which gives them a distinct identity within the university. Many law students find the structured environment conducive to focused study, though it can feel restrictive for those used to more freedom.

Ques. What are the career options after B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) from SASTRA? Is litigation a viable option?

Ans. Graduates of B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) from SASTRA have multiple career paths. Campus placements are available in corporate law firms (AZB & Partners, Crawford Bayley, Dua Associates), banking and financial institutions (HDFC Bank), and consulting firms (EY, TCS legal divisions). Many graduates also pursue litigation by enrolling with the Bar Council and practicing in district courts, High Courts, or the Supreme Court. Judicial services (Civil Judge exams) are another popular option. Higher studies such as LLM from Indian or foreign universities are also pursued by a significant number of graduates. The SASTRA brand and NIRF #11 ranking provide a strong foundation for all these career paths.
