SASTRA B.Tech Biotechnology FAQs

Ques. Can students from the Biology stream (PCB) apply for B.Tech Biotechnology at SASTRA?

Ans. Yes. Students with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (PCB) in Class XII are eligible to apply for B.Tech Biotechnology at SASTRA, even without Mathematics. This is a significant advantage for Biology stream students who wish to pursue a technology-oriented career in life sciences.

Ques. What is the difference between B.Tech Biotechnology and B.Tech Bioinformatics at SASTRA?

Ans. B.Tech Biotechnology focuses on biological processes, genetic engineering, fermentation, bioprocess engineering, and industrial applications of biology. B.Tech Bioinformatics focuses on computational approaches to biological data - genomics, proteomics, and data analysis using software tools. Biotechnology is more lab-oriented, while Bioinformatics is more computational. Both are offered under SCBT at SASTRA.

Ques. What are the placement prospects for B.Tech Biotechnology graduates from SASTRA?

Ans. Approximately 75% of B.Tech Biotechnology graduates from SASTRA are placed. The highest package reported is around 30 LPA, while the average package ranges from 3.5 to 7 LPA. Recruiters include pharmaceutical companies, biotech firms, food companies, and IT companies with bioinformatics divisions. Students also pursue higher studies (M.Tech, M.Sc., Ph.D.) after graduation.

Ques. Is JEE Main mandatory for admission to B.Tech Biotechnology at SASTRA?

Ans. JEE Main is not mandatory but is given significant weightage. 70% of seats are filled based on JEE Main scores combined with Class XII marks. The remaining 30% of seats are filled based on Class XII marks alone. Students without JEE Main scores can still apply and get admitted based on their Class XII marks.

Ques. What research opportunities are available for B.Tech Biotechnology students at SASTRA?

Ans. SASTRA's SCBT has well-equipped research laboratories and active research groups in areas like molecular biology, drug discovery, fermentation technology, and environmental biotechnology. Students can participate in research projects, summer internships at research institutions (NCBS, CCMB, IISc), and industry internships. SASTRA also offers a Summer Research Internship Programme for external students.

Ques. Can I pursue the 5-year Integrated M.Tech Biotechnology at SASTRA instead of B.Tech?

Ans. Yes. SASTRA offers a 5-year Integrated M.Tech Biotechnology programme, which combines B.Tech and M.Tech in a single continuous curriculum. If you are certain about pursuing M.Tech in Biotechnology, the integrated programme saves one year compared to doing B.Tech (4 years) + M.Tech (2 years) separately. Both programmes are offered under SCBT at the Thanjavur campus.

SASTRA: 1 Answered Question

SASTRA University, Thanjavur: Does your CGPA really matter at the end of your course?

Sounak Banerjee
Siddhartha BoseB.Tech Biotechnology, SASTRA University, Thanjavur

Yes, CGPA at SASTRA does matter, especially if you have low CGPA. It will affect your placement and as well as other things. But if you are proficient in programming then you can get into companies like Google without CGPA being a problem. If you have a low GPA, you will miss out on the following things.

  • ACRS: If you want to finish your course in the 7th semester, you will need a GPA of 7.5+. To get the course you want you will need to have around an 8.5 GPA.
  • Although most companies set 7.0 GPA requirements. Most dream companies ask for a GPA of 8+.
  • You won’t be able to go to your graduation ceremony, since SASTRA only invites students with GPAs of 7.5+.

Apart from these above reasons, GPA matters for other reasons too. While hiring, companies look at your GPA, not to evaluate how much you know. Rather they want to how responsible and committed you are.
