Course Curriculum Overview

3

In rating the BA Economics (Hons) curriculum at USME, DTU on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being excellent and 1 being poor. Based on relevance and coverage of content, I would give this program a score of approximately 7.5. The most exciting feature of the curriculum is the number of core courses offered (Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics and Public Policy) combined with some interdisciplinary and management orientated papers. The syllabus is progressive in structure which allows for increased clarity as you progress through your studies. As a result, I feel that students preparing themselves for postgraduate study/ research/ competitive exams will find this information helpful as they prepare for this phase of life. While on the topic of preparation for both academic study and future job roles, I believe this course provides a solid base of theoretical knowledge on which to build. The analysed knowledge base obtained through courses such as Statistics and Applied Economics provides students with analytical and problem-solving capabilities that will be applicable in both postgraduate academic work and job opportunities in related fields. That said, there is limited opportunity for students to have a practical experience of their theoretical studies and therefore I believe that the course could have significantly more value if it included more examples of how to apply the theory in real-world situations. For instance, students are currently assessed through the use of assignments (paper based), presentations and so forth. If the course were able to include Case Studies, Data Analysis Tools, Internships etc., it would add more real-time experience and value to the student.

Fees and Financial Aid

I am pursuing a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Degree in Economics from the University School of Management and Entrepreneurship - (USME) at Delhi Technological University - (DTU) and have had a very good experience with respect to both Academics and Value For Money, at this institution. The total annual course fee for BA Economics (Honours) is ?117000 and ?1500 Registration Fee, which means that the total annual Cost of the course will be approximately ?118000. Therefore, your entire course fee from Year One through Year Four will be around ?470000. This cost is comparatively lower than other established Public/Private Universities offering Economics degrees/business courses, etc. One of the key benefits of being a student at DTU is that most of the time, DTU does not increase course fees during the period of your study. You will be charged the same fee amount, as quoted on your admission notice, for the full duration of your course unless an increase in fee structure has been officially announced by the University to all its students. With respect to what you get for your tuition fee, the total tuition fee includes the following: Tuition fees; Development Charges; Examination Fees; Library Facilities; Student Welfare Costs. Therefore, students do not usually incur extra or hidden costs. With the exception of the registration fee and the caution deposit that is refunded at your time of admission, if you are enrolled in Economics at DTU, you will not incur many other compulsory fees. According to the guidelines set forth by the government(s) and universities, students belonging to the SC/ST/Persons With Disabilities category, tend to receive a much greater advantage on their fees (compared with General Candidates). This is mainly attributed to scholarships received from the government(s) as well as a reduction through tuition waivers.

Campus Life

4

The overall campus experience at Delhi Technological University has been vibrant and highly interactive due to many social exposure opportunities as well as many avenues for student involvement through extracurricular activities. University-wide festivals like Engifest (held every February) and Yuvaan (held every March) play a significant role in defining what campus culture is at DTU. These festivals attract large numbers of students from across the country and provide students with opportunities to compete, perform, participate in workshops, and network with other students. The DTU Central Library has an extensive collection of textbooks, reference books and journals that are related to Economics, Management and other areas of study. The Central Library offers a mixture of both Print and Electronic access to all academic materials, allowing students to have easy access to these resources both physically and digitally. All of the classrooms at DTU are acceptable and functional; many classrooms are equipped with projectors, a SmartBoard (some rooms), Wi-Fi and adequate seating. Although the classrooms may not be ultra-modern, they are/continue to be sufficient for a student’s day-to-day use during class. The DTU sports and extracurricular facilities are as extensive as possible; DTU offers a variety of fields, courts and facility equipment for sports such as basketball, volleyball, football, badminton and Athletics in addition to Gym Facilities. In addition to the above-mentioned opportunities for academic growth and development, campus life at DTU provides the opportunity for a student to participate in many other opportunities through a variety of student-created societies, clubs, and online student social platforms. Overall, campus life at DTU is an excellent mixture of academia, socialization, and personal development.

Admission

Besides DTU's emphasis on a positive social environment through organised activities within the College, it was also attractive to me because of its national and international reputation. While I applied for the same course at DU and IPU, DU had a very high level of competition for BA Economics (Hons) because of its extremely high CUET cut-off. As a result of this intense competition and CUET cut-offs at DU, I was unable to get into any of the DU Economics Programs I wanted. I was interested in two of the IPU Colleges that had degrees in Economics and decided DTU was a better option because of the academic environment and long-term value it offered. When I compared the colleges affiliated with IPU to those affiliated with DTU, I found that DTU had a large centralised campus with better facilities, more active student societies, and a greater level of recognition. The fact that USME is able to take an interdisciplinary approach to combine Economics with a management perspective had a notable impact on my decision to attend DTU. In my experience at DTU, the entire admissions process was extremely straightforward and based on merit. To qualify for BA Economics (Hons), applicants need to have Mathematics as a Compulsory Subject and Language AND 2 Main Subjects in 12th Class to Qualify. In addition to being one of the preferred examinations for this course, the admissions for BA Economics (Hons) at DTU were done through CUET-UG. Each year, the CUET cut-off will be different depending on your test score, your category, and the amount of competition for seats in your chosen College. Overall, my admission to DTU went smoothly and was organised excellently.

Faculty

3

The USME, DTU undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio is fairly even; the classroom size at USME encourages close interaction between professors and students throughout the lecture/tutorial period. Overall, relationships between faculty and students are respectful but comfortable; many professors offer to help with academic issues and/or exam questions, during class and/or via email. Many faculty members are recognized for their teaching style and their ability to clarify and explain material. Faculty members in Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Statistics, and Public Policy have proven particularly effective in developing students' conceptual ability rather than simply relying on rote memorization. I personally appreciated that many of my faculty members provided material that included both theory and real-world examples, created a good environment for learning by allowing student participation and discussion about the material presented, and as a result, allowed me to have an enjoyable learning experience. Faculty members also support the academic growth of their students by assisting them in developing coursework and providing the necessary tools to successfully complete projects, presentations, and exams. With that being said, USME has a variety of faculty members at different levels of effectiveness. Unfortunately, among USME's faculty, there are some instructors who present materials using only lecture slides and/or only theoretical definitions and rely on little or no practical application for example purposes; these instructors often find that many topics seem dull or repetitive. Such teaching practices make interdisciplinary courses less interesting to those students who seek to be more involved.

Night Life

5

The nightlife surrounding Delhi Technological University (DTU) creates a low-key atmosphere that's conducive to friendship and relaxation. The academic areas of campus typically close around evenings, with the library closing it's doors anywhere between 8-9 PM, depending on exam schedules; gyms and canteens also tend to close around this time. There are evening hours for returning to hotels, however, many students choose to continue hanging out or socializing in other campus locations, such as canteen areas. Late-night strolls, bonding with roommates in canteen facilities, or going to the nearby hotels for snacks has become an established social outlet. The most popular off-campus spots for students include Hudson Lane, Kamla Nagar, NSP and various cafes in Rohini. In general, these areas(as a group) will be relatively safe until at least late evenings.

The course curriculum is a bit too theoretical and less practical. The exams in the college takes places every month which are seasonals and are for internal marking and then we have semester exams in every 6 months which accounts for the external marking.
