What Students Say
Likes
- Location-wise, I found Dyal Singh College as one of the best in all of DU.
- There are lots of Societies and they are very active.
- The college canteen is impressive, well maintained, affordable, serves lots of cuisines.
Dislikes
- The area around the college is pretty expense, the living cost near college is pretty high and the college doesn't have a hostel.
- Some people might find the College politics to be slightly extreme, but that's the case with almost all the DU colleges.
- There are some subjective cons like campus size is good but not "huge" (11.5 - 12 acers), location is off campus, there aren't frequent fests like some other south/north campus colleges, etc.
Course Curriculum Overview
Exams are only held once per semester, the IA marks are based on class tests, presentations, lab work and attendance. The syllabus and core curriculum are the same for all the DU colleges. Relevance pretty much depends on you; if you know what you signed up for and prepare accordingly, I can't see a reason why someone would find it irrelevant. Although some elective subjects (like sec and vac) might serve some outdated or irrelevant methods because they're newly introduced, and many DU colleges have this issue, but it's not extreme, some efforts from your side and some from the college's can ovecome this.
Internships Opportunities
The college has placement cells; there are two different placement cells, one for morning students, one for evening. They have WhatsApp groups and very frequently share internship opportunities. Once you apply, they help you prepare.
Fees and Financial Aid
The annual fee for my course is 16,640. And for almost all the courses, it's under 20k. There are available scholarships for student but you'll need to be attentive on the government scholarships web, even without the scholarship, it's very much affordable. There hasn't been any increase in fee from a while and there's no current notice about increase in upcoming years.
Campus Life
Socially, this college is great and not quite what I had heard from the rumours before coming here. It's not as violent as many Reddits I've stumbled upon said it was. Maybe it could've been in past, but even during elections, I didn't see any major fight or conflict. As for the clubs/societies. Very active, very inclusive, great people, and fun to hang out with. I genuinely found most of my great friends via societies rather than my class. Societies run year-long, working on one thing or another, non-stop. It's like a rollercoaster, but there's not a huge workload, it's like a fun hangout.
Admission
Admissions are done through CUET UG and then CSAS counselling. The Science department of Dyal Singh College is one of the best in all of off-campus. In some other aspects, like student engagement, fests and events, campus size, fame, DSC might be behind some South and North Campus colleges, but it's still arguably the best in off campus, and even some south ones too, as a science student, my personal preference except North Campus was Venky > ARSD > DSC > Rest of the south and off campus.
Faculty
I personally find the faculty to be great, and the staff (both teaching and non-teaching) is very cooperative. Teachers are very approachable, and they won't ghost you; they answer calls and messages and help students through their queries, not just academic but relating to other aspects too.
Night Life
There's no nightlife in the college, because there's no hostel and almost everyone leaves by 5, or 6pm at most. In the evenings, however, it's peaceful, quiet, and soothing. We can see small groups scattered here and there as evening approaches, some on the red benches, amphitheatre, football ground, bamboo room, basketball court. It's calming. Many students head off to Lodhi Garden (around 1km from campus), it's an absolutely beautiful place; best place to calm your nerves after the whole day of classes.
