What Students Say
Likes
- Boy:Girl ratio this year is around 3.17:1. More and more women are becoming aware and have achieved higher intellects as time goes by. Definitely a positive sight. Our guest house had to be converted into a girls hostel for accomodation.
- The overall vibe of campus is quite lovely. The IIT Kharagpur campus in itself is a whole ecosystem. Almost everything that out of campus life gives can be found within the campus at iitkgp making it a special place for all.
- The culture in the iitkgp campus is richer than any other college in the entire Nation. Every passion has its own space and it's own group. Finding the type of friends that match your interests is the only thing that creates bonds together.
Dislikes
- Less open book exams. The academics of the campus is honestly, one of the finest but the real life application of the knowledge provided can do some work. Like irl, we will jave our phones and books but be faced with harder problems. So tackle it 1st
- Lesser scope for introverts. If you don't find the right roommates/friends at the beginning. This place can become your worst nightmare because your introvert self cannot pull to enjoy practically anything in this competitive campus
- Racism against non-bengalis by shopkeepers and other local people. In a city dominated with bengalis, there is ofc a little extra for the native people there and some selective mutism towards the outsiders by the general people.
Course Curriculum Overview
This year a lot of programs were changed. Different courses and subjects were added for different departments this year instead of it being same for all first year students. Relevancy and comprehensiveness has honestly improved quite a lot than previous years. But there is some room for improvement like addition of more open book exams and more weightage to it. Because in real life, we'll always have access to google or chatgpt, our moto should be to know how to use it efficiently. Like only knowing a formula exists can make us know a lot of formulas whereas memorizing formulas only leaves out so much space for wonder and exploring other formulas and analytical tactics. So if the barrier of information is removed, only the creativity will matter and that is truly the essence of real world applications.
Internships Opportunities
I don't remember specific names of the companies because most of them are startups. But definitely variety is there from many different countries with stipends reaching 60lakhs for 2 months for the departmental topper of 2nd year in cse department. College also offers a semester (7th sem) off solely for internship purposes
Placement Experience
Placements of the college even during recession shows a lot of potential. Highest package was of the Computer Science department and was around 2cr annually for an international company. And average salary of all departments reaches to 9-11 lpa. Companies like Amazon, Tata, Flipkart, Gail all do look for the finest engineers at iitkgp
Fees and Financial Aid
Year-wise total fees is 312000 INR, fees per semester=156000 INR Each semester, tuition fees is 100000 INR and the rest 56000 INR includes lab fees, mess fees, services, societies etc.. Admission fees was 30000 INR in josaa counselling. For Gen-Ews and OBC candidates, 66% is off on tuition fees. i.e. in each semester they have to pay 33333 INR as their tuition fees instead of 100000 INR. For SC, ST category, tuition fees is completely 0 and only management fees is to be paid (56k INR).
Campus Life
Aanual fest of our college is called Spring Fest and Technical Fest is called Kshitij (biggest tech fest in asia). Both are held in the month of January. The campus library contains literally books on any topic and not just related to engineering. It even has psychology books! Classrooms are equipped with proper thermostats, projectors and wifi routers. Sports and extracurricular activities have their own fest called Shaurya. Also we have inter hostel General Championships (GC) and ofcourse we have the best scores in inter iit competitions.
Hostel Facilities
Rooms are definitely big enough but provided wifi can do some work. Internet speed is a little buggy probably. Meal quality without a doubt, needs a lot of improvement but menu changes do occur frequently. Registration process is done during Sem fees payment and affordability is very well suited. A very friendly locality, no one can ever got bored that's for sure.
Admission
I did fill a lot pf preferences for other college while in JoSaa counselling. But I did mainly focus on branches I'd get in old and top IITs I did not formally apply to many other Colleges. But I did try getting into IITK, Chemical Engineering department
Faculty
Elite faculties is definitely one of the best parts of iit Kharagpur. Almost all faculties are the smartest people I have ever met on the topic they teach. My favourites include prof. Arnab Atta and prof. Manish Kaushal (both from chemical engineering department), prof. Samantaray (elite prof from mechanical department) and prof Dipankar Debnath (Electrical Department). I couldn't publicly say the names of the faculties I did not like because I think I was mostly at fault because I couldn't catch up with their way of teaching. There are 2 exams mainly, midsems (30 marks) and endsems (50 marks) in each subject 20 marks is given by professor based on his method evaluation. About 3-5% of students do fail in the exams. Course Curriculum has added a lot of changes this past year (2024). So the relevancy and contribution toward current requirements is at it's peak at this moment.
Night Life
The lights never go out at iitkgp. The nights are equally as bright as the day. Equal crowd moves around in the day and in the night. It really feels like the campus never sleeps. Hostel timings aren't a thing at iitkgp. Central gyms, entire markets in the name of cafeteria, one of the countries biggest library and public areas never close off aswell. They are 24/7 up and running. Lakeside, Netaji Museum, Helipad are one of the coolest places to langout. Safety is always kept in mind as there are guards almost everywhere.
