- Professors are experts in their own fields.
- Also since ours is humanities department professors are compassionate and understanding.
- Infrastructure of classrooms is good. Girls boys ratio is almost 50-50.
Dislikes
- Laboratory space is very less. Equipments are there.
- More hands on experience is needed with tools like EEG, eye tracker etc.
- Hostel and mess charges are too much. I wish they were less.
Course Curriculum Overview
Course curriculum is comprehensive. Cognitive science comprises of 6 disciplines one of these is anthropology but we do not have any course related to anthropology. This can be included. Course is linguistics heavy, some of these courses can be made optional. More programs electives can be offered. Curriculum is research oriented not industry oriented. Exams are fine, if one is regular to lectures they will be able to qualify the semester exams nicely.
Internships Opportunities
Cognitive science students do a mandatory research internship and the industry one. People work in the ongoing projects or new projects in IIT'D or other IITs. We are given credits for this internship. No stipend is provided.
Placement Experience
Students are eligible for placements in their second year of MSc course. From Cognitive Science most people go into non-core jobs such analyst, UI/UX roles. 30-40% students get placed. Many also go for PhD. I will most likely go for PhD.
Fees and Financial Aid
We pay the fee semester wise. Academic fee is 13.5k. Some of the OBC category students get MCM scholarship, so they don't get 7.5k reimbursement and 1000 per month. SC category students do not have to pay the academic fee or any other fee.
Campus Life
Rendezvous - annual/cultural fest held in october. Tryst- technical fest- organised in March. Many domain specific and general journals are available in library also we can recommend to librarian other journals also based on our needs. Classrooms are well equipped with centralised AC and mutiple boards, digital and manual, with mic facilties and podium.
Hostel Facilities
We are given an apartment shared by four people, two in each room. The rooms are well ventilated, spacious with balcony. The washrooms are also spacious. Meal quality bis not very consistent but there are multiple boptions to choose from, so you'll find something of your taste each day. Rent is affordable, mess charges are a bit more 35k-40k.
Admission
I applied to development studies in IIT Madras. I got the seat there but I rejected the offer because I am more interested in human mind and behaviour. I also applied for MS Cognitive Science at IIT Kanpur but I couldn't clear the interview round. There are lesser number of seats in IIT Kanpur, so the competition is more. Eligibility for this course at IIT'D bis bachelor's degree in any domain, valid GATE or NET score. Then the cutoff is released and students are shortlisted and called for interview.
Faculty
The faculty is really good. Everyone is expert in their fields. Faculty student ratio is 1:25 which is quite good. Professors are approachable, there are some professors who go out of their way to help students with both academic band non academic things. Exams are conducted twice in a semester. Mid semester exams and end semester exams. Course curriculum is research oriented so it not very relevant for industry per se.
Night Life
Campus in timings are not restricted, you just have to show the Identity Card while entering. Library closes at 2AM but during exams it remains open 24*7. Hangout places inside campus are zanskar night mess, Delhi 16, Rajdhani, chayos, etc. Outside the campus is the SDA market.
