What Students Say?
Likes
- The curriculum of the course is excellent
- The exposure is great, you get practical’s with exposure to all kinds of cases and co morbidities in kmc. You learn to counsel patients and do diet planning keeping in mind all comorbidities.
Dislikes
- There was nothing specific that I disliked but since ours was the Covid batch, we missed out on a few opportunities. We did not have enough time and collect data on-site which impacted slightly. But they made us work on review paper and write one.
Course Curriculum Overview
The main reason I chose this college was for it's curriculum. The exposure in the hospitals and the internship opportunities. These exposures prepare you for the real world as you learn with the patients. The sessions, the lectures are also very relevant to the current scenario. If you do the assignments, work well during the internships and listen attentively it is not very hard to clear the course.
Internships Opportunities
They give a list of nabh accredited hospitals to choose from and apply for internships. They give specifications of what needs to be covered during that time. If not hospital they give options to do in hotels affiliated with college or outside where we can devise and work on the menus. If we want to work in icmr they help with that as well. No stiffens will be provided for internships. During the internship depending on person to person you can get involved in various projects, conduct a study in the hospital and publish papers as well.
Loan/ Scholarship Provisions
First year tuition fee- 50,000 at the time of joining + 1,10000 within 15 days to confirm. 10,000 caution deposit. Total 1,70,000. Second year - 1,80,000. Scholarship- applied for Konkani speaking scholarship- 10% - received 17,000 and 18,000 respectively.
Campus Life
Since ours was the Covid batch we did not get to experience much of the clubs and events. But overall it was a good experience. The college infrastructure is great. They have recently in 2021 built a new college which is top notch. The campus is lively, they celebrate each and every festival. They keep free food (sandhya) for all the students for various occasions like Onam, Ganesh Chaturthi etc. they have clubs and conduct activities often. They have a college library with access to most of the journals and great availability of books. Every classroom is having centralised AC. There is a gym near the college called MARENA. There are various clubs, non profit voluntary programs etc.
Admission
I had gone through various colleges and their curriculum, but it did not excite me as I felt their focus was mainly on either food science or technology or nutrition. Not much importance to clinical or applied nutrition. My interest was in applied nutrition. The subjects here interested me the most with diet- medical nutrition therapy, clinical nutrition, sports nutrition and I could do specialization in public health. I was exposed to communities- speaking to people in their homes, anganwadis, school children, one month internship after 2nd sem and 6 months internship in the 4th semester. Usually they conduct Manipal entrance test for various courses but for msc dietetics and applied nutrition we had interview. First round was with the lecturers and second round was with the principal. They also take into consideration your undergraduate marks.
Faculty
We had 5 teachers for around 60 students which is 1 teacher for 12 students. They divided us into groups and assigned one teacher who looked after the assignments, queries and projects for each subject. At present there are 6 faculties. All the teachers are very approachable. They are extremely knowledgeable. They conduct lot of assessments, tests and assignments for evaluating throughout the year. One main semester exam for each of the 4 semesters. Viva for practical's. Presentations. Final presentation and viva for the specialisation subject and for 6 month internship - report presentation with case studies. The exams are conducted on tabs and no pen and paper system. It is online. We are made to sit - 2 per bench and given tabs and it is online. The question papers are more on practical applicability and case studies along with MCQ.
Interview Experience
I had first round of interview with the faculties and second with principal. Just asked me to introduce myself. Why I chose the subject. Why Manipal, why not other colleges. My interests and passions. Basic subject knowledge etc.
